***OFFICIAL*** Oakland A's in-season thread (1 Viewer)

Tonight.

I'm not going to pretend to do a preview - that's been covered pretty well. Most baseball folks are giving them a decent chance at the West this year.

First game tonight against Felix Hernandez. Hopefully Seattle's team OBP of .144 will continue into this year.

Seattle has the ugliest lineup in all of baseball. We should win a low scoring game to start off the year. Let's aim for 90 wins!

Dear Oakland bullpen and Kevin Kouzmanoff,#### you. Yours truly,Dr. Awesome
Watching Cahill tonight on the MLB Network Game, I don't quite know what to make of him.He doesn't seem to have electric stuff, yet he just gets guys out.
Interesting. I thought he was wild but his stuff looked electric. Some of his pitches had some filthy movement. Other pitches were awful and missed the target badly. As far as the rest of this team's performance...yuck. I don't know whether I should cry, drink, or beat small children. Here's hoping it was just a poor start but they'll forget it tomorrow.FTR I didn't draft any A's this year. I think many of the players were overvalued this year and many others are worth streaming but not must haves.

Defense a little lacking tonight
This. It was pretty ugly to watch - and from defenders who are usually rock solid. This worries me more than the actual loss.Oh yeah - and holding my breath when Suzuki went down.

Cahill turned in an absolute masterpiece yesterday. Cahill, Anderson, and Gio have all looked very good. McCarthy looked okay. Braden will get better. Not an ace but solid. The offense looks like it will be reasonable. The bullpen has looked disturbingly awful.

Wuertz is now on the DL.

Break up the A's! They scored 5 runs today. The bullpen again tried to blow the game. The starting pitching has been even better than I hoped. Perhaps the best rotation in the majors...we'll see how these guys rank compared to Philly by season's end.

Trevor Cahill is reportedly close to signing an extension with Oakland...they're supposedly waiting for him to pass a physical. Cahill, Anderson, and Suzuki are are locked up for the next few years! Now onto Gio!

It's official! Cahill is signed through 2017 (16-17 club option years). Just a bit over 30 million. It's great to see Oakland lock up these young studs.

Excellent news. When is this team going to start hitting?

2012. It coincides with the end of the world. Braden pitched his butt off yesterday and Oakland needed a Juan Pierre error to tie it in the ninth. They didn't score a legitimate run until the tenth inning when Suzuki hit a meatball. This is ugly. Kouzmanoff needs to ride the bench in favor of LaRoche for now. His OBP is under 200. And his glove has been crap. Wasn't he gold glove caliber in SD? What happened? Hell, throw Ryan Sweeney at the hot corner. He'll be hard pressed to suck more defensively and his bat is noticeably better.Every. Single. Starter. Is batting. UNDER 250! At least Barton is supporting a healthy 364 OBP but other than that this is really, really ugly. Only one other starter has an OBP above 300 (and that's at 306).On the plus side of things the starting rotation looks absolutely incredible. I'm really excited about these young arms. Seriously - Kouzmanoff needs to go. ASAP. Hold tryouts. Make it a reality show. He looks as lost as any ballplayer I've ever seen. He seems like a nice guy. He took everything in stride when Oakland was begging anyone they could to play third this offseason. But he has been a defensive and offensive liability. At least a guy like Pennington has a crappy bat but offers some decent speed on the basepaths and is a defensive asset.

They need to cut Kouzmanoff. Or trade him away for anything. He continues to be the easiest out in baseball and his defense has been crap. Another error today and his defense cost Oakland 1 run...in two innings.

Didn't we get him for his glove? F you, guy. Such a liability.

Another great performance by a starting pitcher killed by a inept offense and a crap bullpen. McCarthy pitches a gem and Fuentes gives up a solo shot to Swiggy.

Total meltdown tonight in the ninth and tenth innings. The A's now lead the American league in errors with 19.

Going into the ninth inning it was 1-0. Two innings and it went to 3 - 1.

The era of each starting pitcher:

Gio Gonzalez - .47

Trevor Cahill - 3.12

Brett Anderson - 2.29

Dallas Braden - 3.00

Brandon McCarthy - 2.45

It won't stay this low forever but it's an incredibly promising start. AL West division is going to be won this year based largely on these guys.

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics have acquired pitcher David Purcey from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league pitcher Danny Farquhar.Purcey, selected by Toronto with the 16th overall pick of the 2004 draft, made five relief appearances for the Jays this season and has surrendered three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. The left-hander, who turns 29 years old on Thursday, made 12 starts with the Blue Jays in 2008 and posted a record of 3-6 with a 5.54 ERA. He owns a career big league mark of 5-10 with a 5.42 ERA in 59 games, including 21 starts.Farquhar will head back to Toronto after being traded to the Athletics last November in a deal that sent outfielder Rajai Davis to the Blue Jays. Farquhar, a 24-year-old right-hander, had allowed one unearned run in eight innings at Triple-A Sacramento this season.Oakland also had to make a move to get Purcey on the 40-man roster and did so by transferring pitcher Rich Harden to the 60-day disabled list. Harden, who signed with Oakland as a free agent last December, was placed on the 15-day DL in March with a strained right shoulder.
This has been the biggest roller-coaster ride to .500 that I've experienced.
 I agree. Let's hope they roller coaster their way to 90+ wins.

Great pitching performance again last night.

It's going to be interesting to see if the A's can trade for some sort of bat at 3rd base.

The Crushin' Russian is batting below the mendoza line. He looks painfully lost. And his glove has not been great. Somebody call Boone out of retirement. Beane's mantra is to spend the first third of the season figuring out what your needs are, second third of the season acquiring those needs, then the last part of the season making the playoff push. Here's hoping Beane works his typical magic in the coming months.

I doubt he'll be moved within the division now but Brandon Wood seems like the kind of player who'll make a stop in Oakland (or Fremont or Sacramento or ???) at some point in his disappointing career.

Ugh. I live in the middle of Angel town and Brandon Wood does not impress me in the least. Still can't be any worse than Kouzmanoff.

Btw, where's the ESPN hype on this pitching rotation? If the Phillies/Yankees/Red Sox were pitching like these guys we'd never hear the end of it.

They're the A's. They hardly get any mention on this side of the Bay.

Oakland stadium really is a piece of crap but the bleacher bums are a fun crowd. If nothing else take 'em when you're up there. Some stadiums suck. It's just how it goes.

Also, we're only 3 games out of first place!

Yes. It depends which offense will be less inept. I'd be perfectly comfortable rolling McCarthy against Seattle. Wins with these starters will be hard to predict but more often than not they'll at least help the rest of your ratios.

Don't count on a lot of strikeouts (that's not really his thing).

Crisp should go with the afro more often. Loved the look when they wore the throwback jerseys but it's simply an awesome look that he needs to go with a bit more. The fans would eat it up. People crave shtick. The Dodgers fans adopted Manny's dreadlocks. Folk in SF love Wilson's beard. Give people a look to adopt. I could easily see hundreds of fans sitting in the stadium rocking massive fake afros in his honor if he's let the hair fly.

Above 500 finally. Now tied for the Astros for most errors in the league. The pitching staff has the best era in the majors as well.

Oscar Gamble?

Horrible news - Braden just underwent surgery and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

Great news - His replacement is 3-2 with a 2.50 era. Oakland has arms galore. Braden is my favorite A's player but arguably their worst starting pitcher. That's not a knock against him - just a statement as to how awesome the rotation is.

Brandon McCarthy may be out for the year. Oakland has a lot of good pitchers but the injuries are starting become too much. It really hurts the possibility of trades. Tyson Ross also went on the DL. He was Braden's replacement.
