They would have to tag him for 2019.  He is under contract for 2018.  He is not impacting their current available cap space.

They picked up his fifth year option last year.  He is not eating into the cap space they have available any further this year.  He is already factored into the cap space they have available.

The Mack thing is the same as the Carr thing before he was signed.  Trying to sign him ASAP, as it will save money.

His cap number this year is probably a good placeholder, as any new deal will probably have an '18 cap number close to that, give or take.

In terms of a veteran CB, if we get a Trumaine Johnson, or a Tyrann Mathieu (AZ asked him to take a pay cut, he doesn't need to, might be cut), you can assign 8.5 mill of Sean Smith's number to any new deal.

This team could cut Smith, sign a Trumaine Johnson and Mack, and actually gain cap room this year if we wanted to.  We would have bigger numbers for Mack and the CB down the road, but the team has a ton of cap space next year, and only Cooper to worry about.

The main difference is we cannot front-load deals like we did before, but that's fine.  Previous front-loading has made our future cap flexible.

Thanks for the explanation. As much help as the defense need, they are gonna need a lot more cap room. So Reggie could cut Smith and signed Johnson and still have money. Is Johnson worth 12 million? Would Butler be the best fall back plan?

I would love to see them sign as a stop gap is Richard Sherman. I think he still has game, and he is a great locker room presence.

Can't disagree about his veteran presence, but I think he's too much past prime. Would rather get a guy we can get more than a one-year stint out of. Let's think a little longer term about CB so we aren't in this exact same situation next year.

Have to worry about what he's going to look like coming off the torn achilles too.

Kelechi appears to be the exception. Reggie seems to have a blind spot for LB, in general. He seems to be jinxed when it comes to DBs.

Cross-post article from ESPN from the 2018 FA thread. Good article with Raiders best/worst case scenario that I totally agree with -- and echoes @32 Counter Pass and other's noting that too much frugality can be the wrong set-up for this team.

Oakland Raiders

Best case: Defensive end Khalil Mack, who has 36.5 sacks over the past three seasons, needs help, as does outside linebacker Bruce Irvin, according to coach Jon Gruden. And what better way for the Raiders to address that need than by adding a monster tackle inside to fortify the pass rush, someone such as Sheldon Richardson, Star Lotulelei or Dontari Poe, while keeping their own top free agents? Re-signing linebacker NaVorro Bowmanwould solidify the middle, while re-upping cornerback TJ Carrie would help in coverage, which would, in turn, help with the pass rush. Then there’s defensive end Denico Autry, who had a career-high five sacks with seven passes defensed in 2017. It’s a lot, but it’s the best case, no?

Worst case: A repeat, so to speak, of last spring and summer, when the Raiders lost 12 free agents (granted, most of whom they allowed to walk) and none of their free-agent pickups made the kind of impact expected to help fuel a Super Bowl run. Instead, the Raiders, with newbies such as Cordarrelle Patterson at receiver/returner, Jared Cook at tight end and Marshall Newhouseat right tackle, faltered to 6-10 and a top-10 draft pick. Hey, we’re talking worst-case scenario, yes? -- Paul Gutierrez

With Denver shedding that goof Talib to the Rams (great move by the Rams, btw, to take advantage of the space their rookie contracts allow for the moment), puts them squarely in the race for Cousins.

I was never a huge believer in Cousins -- impressed with his run and he unquestionably put up elite numbers the last few seasons -- but never thought he was an elite decision maker (his TD:INT ratio is one idnicator) and not sure he's worth top dollar.

Still, can't deny what he's done and that he's dangerous under center. And not sure I'd like seeing him go to Denver to help revitalize that offense at our expense.

I think any hopes for big spending aren't coming from a place anywhere near reality.

This team improves to 11 wins next year, it's going to come from players already on the team improving, better coaching, and our draft class.

Free agency will hopefully yield a CB and a LB that we can pencil in as starters.  That might be Nigel Bradham and Patrick Robinson.

Sources: #Raiders coach Jon Gruden recently arranged for a face-to-face meeting with former #Bucs RB Doug Martin and came away impressed with him as a person. Oakland expected to make a strong push for Martin in free agency.

Interesting....

ETA: Wonder what this means in terms of the Gruden/Lynch dynamic. Sign we might go away from Lynch and apply that $ to another back?

Justin Ellis - DL - Raiders

Raiders re-signed DT Justin Ellis to a three-year, $15 million contract.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the deal includes more than $6 million guaranteed. The 335-pound Ellis showed well against the run last season, earning PFF's No. 14 run-stopping grade out of 79 qualifiers at defensive tackle. He's been with the Raiders since arriving as a fourth-round pick in 2014.

I am led to believe that Lynch is gone.  If it doesn't work out with Martin, look for Oakland to make a run at Murray.  Just what I'm hearing.

I can't see us moving forward with Lynch on the current contract. I really can't. Stranger things have happened by my feel is we would like to have him back if he does something with the contract to help us out.

I agree with you. I think Lynch still has gas in the tank, but if the offseason stories have any validity he is more of a distraction then he is worth. On the other hand, the meeting with Martin could be a negotiation ploy to get Lynch to take less and commit to the team. I prefer they go young and use a draft pick on a RB. There will be solid options as late as rd 4 IMO.

The Steelers cut Mike Mitchell, maybe they can bring him back on the cheap and add a solid vet to the safety position.

Remember when Al drafted him and everyone lost their $hit? The networks had difficulty even finding footage of Mitchell’s college games. Turned out that Mitchell could play.

One of those 6th rounders for Hundley sounds fine to me.

Also, any reason we shouldn't be thinking about Landry at 10? Best pure edge rusher in draft.

I get moving on from Lynch.  He seemed to take himself out of the game too often and the whole locker room dynamic and how he will mesh with Gruden.  However, I'm not overly excited about Martin and even less excited about Murray.  I think an engaged Lynch is better than both, but Gruden is not going to deal with guys that are fully invested only part of the time.

Those were strange times.   Al drafts the unknown which caused laughter and then the kid plays decently some where else.  I don't miss those days.  At all.

I'm leaning the other way to be honest.  I'm not a huge fan of Martin for our offense.  I really like Murray, assuming his knee is ok.  Remember, he held Henry off for 2 years.  Plus, his between the tackles tough running is the perfect compliment to Richard and Washington.  It makes sense to me that Oakland may kick Murray's tires, he seems like a good fit into what I believe Gruden wants our offense to look like this year.

Granted he was hurt much of the year, but Murray looked pretty close to done last year to me.  I think Mularkey held Henry off more than Murray did last year.  Completely understand the sentiment of wanting to get a power back to pair with Washington/Richard though.  I just don't think Murray is the right guy to fill that role.  I think Washington could be really good in Gruden's offense and will be interested to see his usage.

If you watch the way free agency unfolds, for the most part the big dogs get fed first.  Vets looking for one more decent payday have to wait their turn.  Players like Murray, Martin, Bowman, historically those guys won't sign quick.

Bowman only has so many suitors. And there's no doubt that he would like to wrap up his career in the Bay area.  Same with Lynch.  Teams might like any of these vet backs.  But if they get a back they love in the draft, maybe they lose interest.

Maybe the Raiders would like Murray or Martin on a one year deal, but if they draft a Nick Chubb or Rashaad Penny, maybe they don't need a vet anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if these backs are seen as possibilities, rather than targets.

On the other hand, Bowman, I don't care how many LBs we take, he's going to be one of the best 6 guys, and is the only vet. Why not just re-sign him? I am sure Gruden values that vet leadership.

Agreed, though re-signing your own FA like Bowman can happen before the big pay days. I think the big factor is how motivated both sides are to get a deal done versus letting the market play out. I would think we should be pretty motivated to retain Bowman and as you mentioned he may want to stay in the Bay Area. I think it would be a huge mistake for us to mess up getting a deal done with Bowman.

Al never really  lost his eye for talent, its when he chose to draft those players when it became an issue.

Wish they'd been able to sign Bowman already. Not a good sign for his return to have him on the market this week. I like the idea of bringing back Autry and Carrie too at the right price, but Bowman is a must, assuming he's not asking for ridiculous terms (he may be).

Damnkong Suh on the market. Please stay away, Reggie, unless he's willing to take a humbling low ball. (He isn't.)

Only because Mularkey is an idiot
I'm not so sure about that.  I owned Henry and kept a close eye on the Tenn running game.  When healthy, Murray looked really good.  The big question, to me, is whether he is fully healthy at this point.  If he is, I think he would fit very well into our offense.

So...who is Griff Whalen again? Guess they want returner depth behind Patterson and are not trusting Richard given some fumbling issues?

Frugal but decidedly un-splashy.
