== OFFICIAL OAKLAND RAIDERS 2018 thread == (3 Viewers)

As much as I would love to keep Mack, the cap number just wasn't going to work. I hate how people compare the Mack situation to the Donald situation. Sure, they are comparable talents but Rams aren't paying anyone $25m before they signed Donald. The Raiders already paying Carr $25m per year, and another 22-23m going to one player is a recipe for mediocrity if you can't afford to add players around your superstars.

Seems like it's a common trend lately to build a team during a window when they have their superstar on a cheap and affordable rookie contract before the players get expensive. Mostly quarterbacks on the rookie deals, such as Seahawks winning the super bowl with Russell Wilson on their rookie deals. Eagles with Wentz/Foles. The Raiders already are past that window when they signed Carr to that extension, and there were no way in hell they would be able to compete if they signed Mack to another colossal deal.

There are ZERO teams paying two players 20+m per year. ZERO.
Rams gave Cooks huge extension & still paid Donald. Of course Rams also aren't paying coach $10M a year because owner has a man crush on him (and I'd much rather have McVay). So when Goff & Gurley come up they trade Donald & let Gurley go to pay Goff?

Reggie did great job on all these contracts while rebuilding team and set them up to be able to pay their studs. We've put up with alot as Raider fans but how do you possibly justify this? If your team sucks you at least have a top draft pick to look forward to. And you're lucky enough to get a player the quality of Mack? Then you forget those awful seasons. But now they trade him away? How do you accept that? And the poor fans in Oakland. They've been totally screwed over for final 2 years as Raiders are clearly looking ahead to build for Vegas.

That’s going way against sharks who has Rams winning by 4.
I’ll take that bet. The rams are going to slaughter this defense. Plain and simple. My thoughts would have been the same with Mack.  They will put up 35 points, minimum.  Raiders can’t score with them. And then there’s the ram d.

You don't add McCarron as an upgrade over Cook and/or Manual.  You add him to passive aggressively communicate to David Carr that his job is not safe.  Classic Gruden dwad move.
He went 13 - 34 vs Bears backups while Manuel went 18-22 vs Seattle. This is not an upgrade. And I'm sure this has no affect on David's job.

Let's recap...DA Raiders dealt one of the best defensive players in football.... traded for a QB who was signed to start but failed to make the team..... and are in the process of releasing a receiver they gave a third-round pick for back in April.... all in the last eight hours.

Haven't even played a game and Chucky Honeymoon is waaaay over.

Here are my unorganized thoughts on a day I was certain wasn't going to happen even 24 hours ago, all to be taken with a clear Raiders bias;

The trade is to the better of the 2019 club and beyond.... If the Raiders knew that they wouldn't exceed the Aaron Donald money, and if they knew that the Mack camp wouldn't accept less than more than the Aaron Donald money.  If they truly felt they would not be able to get him resigned, then trading him was their only move.

The trade is not good for the 2018 version of the club.  But I'm not sure show much worse.  No argument from me that Mack is currently in the conversation for the best NFL defensive player in the entire league.  But I'm not certain how much that translates into the wins columns.

The Bears can take on the contact Mack will demand because their QB is still playing out his rookie contact.  Maybe the Raiders could have done the same, but before too long it would have become a bigger issue to maintain both Carr and Mack's contracts.

I don't buy the idea that this will destroy the locker room.  Was Mack loved? No question.  Team leader? Absolutely.  But from the players point of view, the Raiders just 'allowed' Mack to go get paid a year early without forcing him to live out the last year of his current contract.   To me, not paying him and not trading him, would have been worse.

For this season, as Raider fan that will watch each and every moment of their games, this sucks.  Simply because the product on the field will be less than what it could have been. For a life long Raider fan, I'll try my best to hold judgement in the early hours.  All I can do now is try to not get pulled in the fun the media will have at the Raiders expense.

Maybe the Vegas Raiders can get an elite pass rushing prospect with their top-5 pick next year?

This has been a clown show since Gruden was hired.

Only 9 years $90M more to go for Gruden. Any Raider fans starting to worry just a tiny bit that Gruden is still mad about the last time he got fired by the Raiders and is just out to screw then over, but do it in a slow way to where they are forced to fire him and still owe him the balance of the $100M but don't have enough evidence to sue him and not pay him?

I don't get that move, from what I read AJ looked like hot garbage this preseason. Already had that.
The guy was thoroughly beaten out by the Peterman. The guy who threw a pick like every 3rd pass in his only start.

This trade is arguably worse than the Mack deal logically. A 5th rounder for basically nothing. Maurice Hurst was a 5th rounder.
Totally agree, Mack forced their hand and they got value back. This is comical.

I've been trying to spin this into a positive and i can't.  Imagine the morale boost if they paid Mack and he was there next Monday night.

So...based on the 54 replies rejecting my explanation for the McCarron trade as ridiculous, there is also no viable alternative theory offered by the group, is that about right?

Do you all not understand that you have a coach with a documented history of messing with players' heads?

Do you not remember the early spring statements about how better play was needed by "the quarterback"?

I have no problem accepting the possibility that that's NOT what is going on here...but you seem to be flailing for an alternative explanation...that's all I'm saying.

Dude. Seriously?

Alternative explanation. Cook and Manuel are not that good and we just over reached looking for add someone to replace them.

Now go away before I have to taunt you a second time.

Of course there was. They viewed McCarron as a better alternative than Connor Cook - the guy they released about 10 seconds after the trade.

Exactly. Remember the speculation when Gruden hired he may push Cook against Carr because he spoke so glowingly about Cook coming out of college? If he really wants to mess with Carr then he should start talking about how these #1 picks set them up to find a franchise QB :rolleyes:

And the cherry on the turd sundae of the Mack trade is giving the Bears a 2nd rd pick. ?

Then they cut a player they used a 3rd pick to acquire LY. Just 2 more data points that justify my complete lack of confidence in the staff/front office.

I am so done with this team. They can’t move to Vegas soon enough as far as I am concerned.
