Former OU star Everage, 30, drowns in Texas river

CAMERON, Texas -- Brandon Everage, a safety on Oklahoma's 2000 national championship team, drowned while swimming in a Texas river. He was 30.

Milam County Sheriff David Greene said in a news release that authorities were called to the Little River in the western part of the county on Friday evening. Friends said they had been swimming when Everage, a Granger resident, went under water and didn't surface. A dive team recovered his body Saturday morning.

Everage was a reserve on Oklahoma's 2000 national championship team and a starter on the 2003 team that had a shot at the BCS title before losing to LSU in the Sugar Bowl.

Everage was a second-team All-American in 2002, when he had 94 tackles, six interceptions and three sacks. He was chosen as a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given each year to college football's top defensive back.

As a senior, he had 60 tackles while starting the final 12 games at free safety for the Sooners, including the 21-14 loss to LSU in the Sugar Bowl with the BCS title on the line. He was not drafted and didn't play in the NFL.

Everage finished his career with 285 tackles -- the fourth-most by a defensive back at Oklahoma -- and 10 interceptions, plus 28 deflected passes. He played on Sooners teams that went a perfect 4-0 against Texas -- including a 63-14 win in 2000 and a 65-13 win in 2003 -- and won two Big 12 championships.

"Brandon was a favorite in the locker room and a favorite among the coaches. He played football with tremendous passion and had a special spark that inspired everyone," coach Bob Stoops said in a statement.

"We will always have fond memories of him. For now, though, we are deeply saddened for Brandon's family."

Oklahoma rising sophomore defensive tackle Daniel Noble made a wise but tough choice this week.

Unable to shake the effects of post-concussion syndrome, Noble ended his college football career.

Noble suffered a concussion in his freshman season against Iowa State and had setbacks while trying to get back on the field for spring drills.

"He was a strong, young guy that did well," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops told the Oklahoman. "Unfortunately, he wasn't able to get past the injury."

The good news is that recent data suggests that concussions are dropping in college football. In the fall of 2004, about 3.4 out of every 1,000 students who stepped on a college football field at any given time suffered a concussion. That rate has dropped since from between 2.4 to 2.8 out of 1,000 students.

Of course, that data depends on students making honest assessments of their health. Even former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow admitted in his book "Through My Eyes" that he played through post-concussion symptoms in his senior season. Tebow, who suffered a concussion against Kentucky, said that he could barely see the field warming up for a game two weeks later against LSU. Tebow hid the symptoms from his coaches, telling former coach Urban Meyer he was fine.

The dangers of post-concussion syndrome have been chronicled in recent years. Damage to the brain from excessive blows to the head can result in long-term problems that include irrational mood swings, depression, loss of short-term memory and impaired judgement.

It's a risk that Noble chose not to take. Noble will probably miss college football, but his quality of life will be better for it.

Moving Jefferson to SLB has its merits. Really excited about Gabe Lynn this year also and the back seven is going to be very good. Funny because this year I worry about the line more than in the past while the back seven seem like the best group Stoops maybe has ever had at OU.

Can't wait. I have a scheduling conflict on the 17th of September (wedding) so I'm trying to arrange anotehr game this year. Not living in Texas anymore is gonna sting.

We're probably the #1 team in the nation year in and year out if we play at home. On the road, we're just very good/elite.

Travis Lewis gone 8 weeks with a broken bone in his foot, that stinks. Back seven is still gonna be great though but I do have some concern about the defensive line. Really hoping McFarland steps up this year.

It looks like we will lose Lewis for 2 months? I hope he is back for Texas. The FSU game just got a lot tougher without Lewis. I hope the brilliant Jones shows up in Tallahassee, not the Jones that showed up in College Station last year. The offense may need to carry the defense for awhile. I worry about the DTs and running game a bit, but this team is loaded. Sure would be nice to have had Franks another season. This team has the players to win national title #8. I would love to get another crack at Boise for all the marbles. Boomer!

I would enjoy an Oklahoma v Alabama national title game. As for OU fans looking to this year even before last year began, I think many fans saw 2011 as the perfect storm of talent, chemistry, and experience that would be coming together this season. Not sure why but my travels have led me into the path of many Tide fans. I can honestly say I enjoyed talking with all of them. The fans I have talked with were all extremely loyal, football savvy, and passionate about Alabama football. Much like the majority of OU fans. There is only 1 coach I would prefer over Stoops and that is Saban. You guys have a good thing going on there. Good to see Bama back contending for national titles again every season. Best of luck this coming season.

Yep. It's a bad break for Lewis and the Sooners. Worst of all, it comes before a down of real football has been played. I hate to see this kinda stuff happen on my own team, but it sucks no matter who it is. Best of luck and a speedy recovery to the kid.

Sooners' Ronnell Lewis eligible

Oklahoma defensive end Ronnell Lewis has been declared eligible for the 2011 season, university officials confirmed Friday.

Lewis, a junior, had been in academic limbo, but remained in practice during fall camp and the preseason. He remained on the depth chart and was working with the Sooners' first unit, but Oklahoma officials had been unable to confirm his NCAA eligibility throughout the preseason.

The 6-foot-2, 244-pound native of Dewar, Okla., has five starts in two seasons for the Sooners, and made 37 tackles with 3½ sacks in 2010. He's expected to start at Oklahoma's hybrid linebacker/stand-up defensive end position that All-American Jeremy Beal had occupied the past three seasons.

Boren to decide in three weeks

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma president David Boren says multiple conferences have shown interest in the Sooners recently and he expects to decide whether to leave the Big 12 or not within the next three weeks.

Boren said Friday that Oklahoma is seeking stability in its conference relationship with "partners that are both outstanding athletically and academically as well because a conference that's strong is not only stable but it's one in which there are multiple relationships, along with sports, between the university members."

He said he tried to prevent Texas A&M from leaving the Big 12 and was disappointed the Aggies announced this week they would seek to join another conference -- most likely the SEC -- by next July.

"Of course, we have some great partners in the existing Big 12. We have interest from other conferences and other universities, so it's really a tribute to the strength of our program at the University of Oklahoma that there is so much interest in us," Boren said.

"So, we have to carefully evaluate the various comments that are being made to us and the various possibilities that are being shown to us before we decide what's best for the university to do."

Athletic director Joe Castiglione, who attended a ceremony with Boren to celebrate a $10 million donation toward a campus dormitory, said he was "not here to answer any of those kind of questions." Castiglione has not commented publicly on Texas A&M's departure from the league, nor on Oklahoma's future plans.

Oklahoma was offered chances to join both the Pac-10 and the SEC last year but decided to stick with the Big 12, even as Nebraska left to join the Big Ten and Colorado joined the Pac-10. A&M's departure would leave drop the league that once had 12 teams down to nine members.

"I don't think there's anything that has to be, at all, and everything doesn't have to be done today. I mean, there's nothing that says the conference will collapse at nine," Boren said. "We have a full season to play and we'll have to go through.

"Obviously, I think if we could eventually -- and that doesn't mean in one year, maybe it's going to take two or three years -- if we were to eventually get back to 12, I would feel better about it."

Boren said the bottom line is "I don't think OU is going to be a wallflower when all is said and done."

"I don't know how long it will be before clarity comes to us. My experience is that on these kinds of things, it might be a matter of 72 hours, it might be a matter of two weeks. I don't really think this is something that is going to linger on beyond two or three weeks at the outside," Boren said.

"It's been consuming my life the last few days, but it's a fascinating challenge and we're just in the search for what's best for the university."

Boren confirmed that he flew to Missouri, whose chancellor is the chairman of the Big 12 board of directors, and then to College Station last week to try to prevent the Aggies from leaving. He said he's disappointed that he thought the Sooners had conference stability and instead face the same challenge as last summer.

"We don't know what's going to happen. Some things are trends beyond the control of any one university," Boren said. "Is there going to be a continued trend toward consolidation? Are we going to see conferences that are now 12 ... move to 16? Is that going to happen? Maybe that's not going to happen."

"You've seen both. You've seen a tendency toward consolidation and then you've seen some pushback in the very largest conferences from schools that say, 'Not too big.' We're trying to sort all that out. At this point in time, I'm being very honest with you. I do not know with certainty or perhaps even can't hazard a totally intelligent guess as to what our final decision will be. But we are carefully looking over all of the options. There is no school in the Big 12 more active than we are right now."

The leadership of this university is exceptional so I'm very confident they will make the best decision for the institution first, which is great.

Jefferson is $ for sure. Really looking forward to seeing Miller run the ball. He looks like the real deal. Mix in the scat back type Finch (reminds me of Q from the 2000 national championship team) and it really gives the offense a lot of flexibility. Landry really looks comfortable and Broyles is the best WR in college football.Whaley looks like he is going to get some goal line touches. I thought it would be all Miller down there. But agreed Whaley looks very nimble.

I thought the same thing but it's amazing how you don't go crazy when the game is somewhat in hand. They have a week off next week before the trip to Tallahassee so I'd like to see them bring their A game here in the third quarter. Lots of work to do, FSU is a legit top ten team and probably the best or second best team they'll play all year (I think A&M is gonna be fantastic).

OU football notebook: Jonathan Miller decides to transfer

Oklahoma's backfield is now a little less crowded, with coach Bob Stoops delivering the news Tuesday that sophomore running back Jonathan Miller has decided to transfer.

Stoops said the decision came down to “family decisions and the opportunity to maybe play a little more.”

“We're all OK with that,” Stoops said. “He's a good young man, and I'm sure he's going to do really well.”

Miller was listed on the preseason depth chart as a co-starter with Brennan Clay, who did start the game against Tulsa. Miller did not appear until Oklahoma's second-to-last series, when the Sooners led 47-14. He came in with backup quarterback Drew Allen.

Miller did get seven carries (for 20 yards) as OU ate up the final minutes, but he sounded frustrated afterward.

“Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse,” he said on Twitter an hour or so after the game.

Decision made, he had cooled down by Tuesday.

“Want to thank all the coaches and academic staff and teammates who have always helped me,” he tweeted.

Miller, from Garland, Texas, told Clay he planned to stay in school through the rest of the semester before transferring. He also urged a couple of Sooners to win the school's eighth national title for the late Austin Box.

Former five-star running back will leave OU

Jermie Calhoun came to Oklahoma as the nation's No. 1 running back and the No. 7 overall recruit in the Class of 2008's ESPNU 150.

Stuck on the back end of the depth chart, Calhoun has become the second Oklahoma running back to transfer since the season began.

Jonathan Miller also announced his transfer earlier this month.

Both players plan on staying at Oklahoma through the semester.

"We understand Jermie wants an opportunity to play more. He has our support and best wishes," coach Bob Stoops said in a release.

Calhoun rushed for 220 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries as a freshman in 2009, but got just 11 carries in 2010 before suffering a serious knee injury against Colorado.

The Van, Texas native has been unable to crack the depth chart this season with two sophomore backs, Brennan Clay and Roy Finch, emerging, as well as walk-on Dominique Whaley, who rushed for four touchdowns and 131 yards in Oklahoma's season opener.

Calhoun's decision means the nation's top two running backs in the 2008 class both signed with Big 12 schools before eventually transferring. Colorado signed Darrell Scott from that class, but he transferred to South Florida after the 2009 season.

Any FSU fans know how big of a HFA will be for the Seminoles? Does it get loud there? Some things working in OU's favor: The OU run game looks much improved as does the OU line that looked terrible 2 seasons ago and shaky at times last season. Whaley looks to be the perfect running back for the offense with the 2 other backs being a nice change of pace. The WRs for OU are so deep and talented its sick. I see this game being high scoring. The biggest questions to be answered will be if Landry has grown up and doesn't let the hostile environment affect him. Hoping Broyles and Stills run wild through the Noles secondary. Can OU establish a run game to make them not so 1 dimensional? Can FSU defense handle the hurry up offense this year? They clearly couldn't last season. Anotherkey will be how much will the Lewis injury hurt OU? The FSU QB is big and athletic as is a threat to run or pass. I would feel a lot better having Lewis chasing him around. I think Lewis being out is the biggest single reason the line is 3 and not 6. He is that much of a difference maker.

This game could help bring back FSU into national prominence much like OU's win in the 2000 national title game over FSU signaled the end of the miserable 90s and a return to greatness for the Sooners. Should be a great game.
