***OFFICIAL Philadelphia Phillies 2010 Thread*** (1 Viewer)

It's amazing how good the Phils have been the past 3 seasons with such little depth both in pitching and in the field. This may be the year where that lack of depth really hurts them. Most of the pundits are taking this division for granted but the Braves have a pretty good staff and the Marlins are young and can hit.

 They just had their #3 starter go down for the first three weeks and they're able to plug in a serviceable guy like Kendrick into the rotation. But yes, I agree that the Braves look much improved.

Ok but after Kendrick, who could they possibly put in the rotation? Contreras? Bring back Pedro? If any of their other starters go down, their lack of depth will hurt them.

:D So they have a 6th starter to go to get by, but then they will have problems if someone else gets hurt? what team would be in a better position?

The same thing could be said for about 25 of the remaining 29 teams.

So where's all the excitement for the most potent offense in the league? I know, we've faced the Nats and Astros, but you have to admit this is damn impressive so far.

Team Avg. = .337 1st

Team OBP = .431 1st

Team SLG = .540 1st

Also lead the league in walks, runs scored, total bases. What's been so impressive is the patience that everyone is showing at the plate, and we're second fewest in K's. Just an awesome display of firepower in the opening week. And we have Doc going on Sunday and the Nats in town starting Monday. Life is good.

And up until last night, Victorino hadn't done squat. If they get some production out of the 7 hole, that's a lot of pressure on a pitching staff.

I love the way this team makes a pitcher work and gets his pitch count up. Always loved how the Yankees did that and now we are that team. Plus I agree with Sarge about Jimmy getting walks when he says "I think that is a good thing."

There aren't any breaks in the lineup until the 9 spot, and even Roy was hitting rockets on opening day. ;) Seriously though, Victorino will do his thing, and Mitch Williams said it best this week, that 7 spot suits him better because there's no thinking, not alot of strategy to worry about, just get up there and hit, since Shane isn't the sharpest knife.

 Sarge is Captain Obvious, isn't he?! They said last night that last year Jimmy didn't get his 7th walk of the season until May 15th, the 33rd game of the season IIRC. And he's done it in 5 games. Amazing turn around by him so far, let's hope he keeps it going. Seeing the results would hopefully keep them going with this gameplan. By game 3 of a series, team's bullpens will be shot and the feeding frenzy even better.

Rollins not in the starting lineup as originally announced. Everyone was suprised and nothing more on why he's not starting yet.

Rollins on the DL with Grade 1 / Grade 2 calf strain. Expected to miss 2-4 weeks. Take your time so it doesn't linger.

Exxon Valdez recalled to play short.

Well a couple weeks with Shane at the top, we should be ok, let's just hope it's closer to 2 weeks than 4. As long as the NL MVP, Placido Polanco, keeps doing his thing we'll be just fine! He's a machine.

150 - 12 this year... I'm calling it
This team is basically going to toy with the entire league this year. If they want to win a world series, they got it. I honestly don't think there is a team in this league that could stop the Phils other than the Phils. Lets just hope Lidge "takes a rest" for the rest of the year............... :lmao:

Went to the game yesterday and the fans sucked and I'm not talking about any vomit guys. From the ring ceromony on most of the crowd seemed rather uninterested. People left after getting the lead, losing the lead, and with the big boys due up in the 9th. Was watching the alley and I don't know what goes through the mind of someone who stays to see ryan howards at bat and then leaves after he strikes out. As if jason werth couldn't get a 2 out hit or 2 out home run to tie the game.

Thats surprising because the Phillies fans have been amazing the past 2 years...................

It's a long season, GB. But I hope you're right.

so much for that... and I was there yesterday with ZERO runs scored.... the Phils may not win another game.....

hehe........my post was an exaggeration but I do think the Phils are the best team in the NL and can compete with anyone in the AL. Two teams in the NL that I think could potentially be dangerous for the Phils are the Marlins and the Giants (who would of course be dangerous for any playoff team). I know the Phils aren't actually going to "toy" with the entire league because their bullpen is still a mess and their rotation after Halladay is good but not great. However, compared to other teams (at least in the NL), the Phils have the best overall balance of offense, defense and pitching.

soooo . . . what exactly are we going to do about this closer situation?Does Danys get a shot in the next save situation?
That's exactly what I was thinking. Madson just isn't cut out for it, leave him for the 8th and nothing more. Or we can just let Roy pitch every day. I know it's three weeks in, but is there any question on who the best pitcher in baseball is? My god this dude is filthy. He may just win 25 games.

BBTN had the stats comparing Lee and Halladay over thier first 4 Philly starts

Both 4-0

Both 0.82 ERA

Both 6 walks

Lee had about 6 more Ks

That's all well and good, but between his first four starts and the playoffs, Lee went 2-4 with an ERA over 6. I'm thinking Doc won't have that kind of roller coaster ride, we'll see.

Madsen just isn't cut out for April.

He blew one save. Relax.

is this a serious comment? have you not seen his performances as a closer in the past? maybe he can still straighten it out, but he has repeatedly choked in save situations.

GMFB Halladay.

Don't want to overemphasize this weekend, but a nice little series for them to pick up, especially hammering Santana like that. Keep the Mets from getting too confident.

Don't like leaving in Halladay that long for no reason. He looked whooped by the end of the game.

Other than that, great series. Smokin Joe back tonight.

I have to assume that Charlie was worried about blowing the bullpen early in the season, especially with Moyer coming up the next day (and a recovering Blanton the next). I'm sure that he would rather take his chances that Halladay can keep up his stamina better than the guys in the pen.

That's fine but I think it was more a product of getting him the complete game shutout. Durbin, Bastardo, Conteras hadn't pitched since San Fran so every one should be plenty good by Sunday. I would have pitched Bastardo since he's likely to not remain on team the whole year/won't pitch enough innings to fatigue by years end. I think Charlie works his starters a little too hard(see 130pitches by Pedro last year). If Met's worked the count/fouled some balls off a little more, Roy could have ended at 130 for no reason. Roy is a workhorse but might have to be careful with him in the NL, I have a feeling he will have a chance at complete game many, many times this year.Don't want to be to critical though, other than this one issue I love the man.

Don't ##### with the Pholice??

Fan on Phils' field subdued with TaserBy Kia Gregory and Matt GelbInquirer Staff WritersFor the first time in Phillies history, a fan running on the field at Citizens Bank Park was subdued by a Philadelphia police officer using his Taser gun. With 44,817 fans watching in the stands Monday night, the teenage male, wearing a black baseball cap, red T-shirt, and khaki shorts, ran on to the field during the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals."This is the first time that a Taser gun has been used by Philadelphia police to apprehend a field jumper," Phillies spokeswoman Bonnie Clark said in a statement. "The Police Department is investigating this matter and the Phillies are discussing with them whether in future situations this is an appropriate use of force under these circumstances. That decision will be made public."The fan made several loops in center field with security personnel and the police officer in pursuit. The officer appeared to fire several times before hitting the man. The man fell to the ground. He was then helped off the field. The police officer "utilized his Taser" when a fan ran onto the field, said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.Running on the field during a game is a crime and has been for decades. Normally, such suspects are wrestled to the ground, escorted off the field, and arrested. It was unclear Monday night if a Taser had ever been used on a Major League Baseball field to subdue such a suspect.Vanore said the Police Department's internal affairs unit would open an investigation to determine if the firing "was proper use of the equipment."Clark said the suspect was 17 years old and would be charged with criminal trespass. The team would not release his name because he was underage.Police did not release the name of the man arrested or the charges.
