Nice mellow snowfall all day so far at solitude. No lines. Most awesome.
Powder mountain mostly shut down, due to wind delays.

I have a season pass at powder mountain if you're ever back that way.

Unfortunately I spent all night last night driving through a blizzard driving AWAY from the ski resorts. First good storm in a while and I get 6 hours of sludging through it on the interstate for a family vacation and 0 hours skiing it!

Solitude has been perfect! 22 inches over fri-sat. Bluebird perfection since. Utterly empty today and will have less people tomorrow. Still plenty of powder in the trees. Fantastic trip!

Man the travel from Utah to south OC is ridiculously easy. Driver picks us up, 40 min to the airport. Delta check in downstairs with its own tsa behind the counter +precheck. Through security in less than 5 minutes. Flight time is 1:30. Pops picked us up. 20 min home. Door to door, never drove, 5:20 total. And 2 of those hours were at the gate. Where I enjoyed a breakfast burrito my wife made at the condo. I don’t even feel like I traveled. Trip was awesome.

Claire Murphy, a 25 year old ski patroller at mammoth passed away yestarday. She was caught in an avalanche on 2/14. She was doing avalanche mitigation on one of my favorite parts of. The mountain. Chair 22/Lincoln mountain.

So sad.

My family and I are totally novice skiers, but has anyone in this thread ever skied in the Alps? I'm looking for recommendations for places to go for a few days. My top priorities would probably be beautiful scenery, easy slopes, and easy to travel to from the US. Bonus points if there are places in the vicinity where you can also do sledding.

Planning Japan. Need input
What do you need to know?
Mostly everything. 😂😂😂

Rental car? Location. I’ll be at/near niseko. Lodging is looking to be the main cost.

Do you bring skis? Or rent?
We fly to Honeda airport, then connect to New Chitose. Our flights always seem to arrive in the evening, so we spend the night at the hotel airport.

The next day we catch a shuttle to Niseko, which takes a couple hours, with a pit stop at Mushroom Kingdom. We have always used Hokkaido Resort Liner, with shuttle reservations well in advance (already have them for January). We’ve never rented a vehicle. I have a friend who has, if you need info on driving yourself.

Niseko United is a combination of four resorts*, but we always stay at Grand Hirafu. I think this base offers the most dining options, though Hanazono may have more upscale eateries - the Park Hyatt is spectacular for fine dining, but a bit outside our budget. If I had the means or some kind of discount, I’d strongly consider it.

As peasants, we’ve always stayed at Ki Niseko. It’s right next to the Grand Hirafu gondola, which is great, but often a bottleneck for lines in the morning. The hotel has a good restaurant and onsen on property. It used to be reasonable, though rates have skyrocketed in the last couple years.

What we haven’t done is make dinner reservations far in advance, but I think that should change this year. I believe Table Check is one of Japan’s central places to do so online, akin to OpenTable.

I’ve both rented and brought my own skis. It’s cheaper to do the latter, though a little more hassle. It also may be fun to rent powder skis, in the event of a big dump. But unlike CA, Niseko tends to get 4-12 inches every day for weeks, rather than multiple feet at once.

100-110 underfoot has served me well for the gate-served areas you’ll likely want to check out. This is a good summary. Though technically out-of-bounds, non-maintained terrain, gates 3, 4, 5, and 9 are well travelled, mostly gentle slopes with lower avalanche risk. I always look at the avalanche report, though I don’t carry avi gear. I guess the most cautious approach would entail avi training, equipment, and a guide, but some of these gates are little more than “side country” you’d see in US resorts.

So what are your final dates?

*the four resorts are Annapuri, Niseko, Grand Hirafu, and Hanazono. Annapuri isn’t very developed as far as I can tell. Niseko is, though that resort feels a little more confined, so we’ve focused on Grand Hirafu and Hanazono.

The focus is still the last two weeks of Jan. But we’re flexible into Feb. depends on flights mostly. Lodging is becoming a factor though. We’re mostly seeing $1000+/night.

We’ll be there 1/16-20, then go to Rusutsu for 4 days. I think our room was ~$600/ night; that includes daily (huge) breakfast. We made those reservations in May, and got discounts for booking early + repeat guests.

I was really hoping you’d stay at the Park Hyatt, so we could see how the other half lives. I’m sure those rooms are well over a grand a night, but you’re worth it!

*If you end up renting a car, Rustsu might be good for a day trip. It's about 45 minutes away, has a more local feel, and spectacular tree skiing.
