Miami junior safety Kenny Phillips has become the first underclassmen to announce that he will be leaving school and entering the 2008 draft. Phillips mother made the announcement yesterday. Despite having what some considered something of an off-season in 2007, Phillips is generally considered to be the top safety prospect in the upcoming draft class. Underclassmen have until January 15th to file papers with the NFL in order to be eligible for the 2008 draft.

Louisville wide receiver Mario Urrutia will bypass his senior season and enter the NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Urrutia had 35 receptions for 501 yards and three touchdowns during an injury-marred season in 2007. Urrutia played in 34 career games for the Cardinals, catching 130 passes for 2,271 yards and 16 touchdowns.

"It's by far the toughest decision I've ever made," Urrutia said. "Unfortunately, with missing time this season and playing injured I got to see football from a different perspective. You only have so much time to play this sport, and the 2008 draft is my opportunity."

Urrutia hoped to capitalize on a breakout 2006 season -- when he caught 58 passes for 973 yards and six touchdowns -- last year, but was troubled by a nagging leg injury that forced him to miss two games and limited him in others.

Coach Steve Kragthorpe said he was "disappointed" in Urrutia's decision, adding he thought Urrutia would have benefited from returning for his senior year.

How does this guy project? Is he another Plax?

Super Mario earned that nickname his first two years at UL and considered coming out last year after his RS soph season. After Brohm decided to stay, Urrutia did as well. That was a huge mistake. He was viewed as a late 1st/early 2nd talent this time last year, but he had a terrible junior season. He struggled to adjust to the new offense under Kragthorpe. I am not sure if anyone keeps up with this, but I would not be surprised if he led the nation in drops. It was to the point that many around here began questioning if he was involved in point shaving. There have been other reports that he is just not interested in football as much as he was before. He has a ton of talent, but seems to have many issues that could hurt his stock. I am no draft expert, but I would guess he is a 3rd rounder based on talent.

I was just reading up on Urrutia on a UL message board. The consensus there is he is viewed as a 4th round pick at best, with many saying he may not get drafted. Take that FWIW.

Travis Beckum (Wisconsin TE) announced today that he will return for his senior season, fyi. Cross him off the list.

http://uwbadgers.com/sport_news/fb/headlin...p;storyid=12506

One more year for Beckum? Yes!

Madison, Wis.

Wisconsin football fans would love another season of tight end Travis Beckum in a Badger uniform. So would head coach Bret Bielema.

Turns out Beckum would, too.

The 2007 first-team All-American said Thursday that he has decided to return to the Badgers for his senior season.

“Playing at Wisconsin in front of the greatest fans in college football is something I want to continue doing for one more year,” said Beckum, a junior and finalist for the 2007 John Mackey Award. “I looked into my options and found the best one is right here with this university. I’m enjoying being a Badger and can’t wait for our bowl game in Tampa, as well as for next season. I’m glad this decision is behind me and I’m looking forward to another year at Camp Randall.”

The news that a student-athlete Chicago Tribune college football writer Teddy Greenstein earlier this season called “the best Big Ten player I’ve seen,” understandably pleased Bielema.

“We’re all thrilled to have Travis returning for his senior season,” Bielema said. “I always encourage our players to explore the options they have and we give them all the help we can. Travis saw that the best situation for him is to remain a Badger and I support that and, obviously, I’m very excited to have him with us for his final year.”

Beckum has 73 receptions for a nation-leading (among tight ends) 960 yards. His 73 catches are the most ever for a Wisconsin tight end and are just two away from tying former All-America wide receiver Lee Evans’ school record of 75. Beckum’s 960 yards are also a UW record for tight ends. He needs just 40 yards to become only the fourth 1,000-yard receiver in school history.

Beckum has 134 receptions for 1,863 yards and 11 touchdowns during his career, which has included only two seasons as a tight end.

12/14/07 - Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini said he expects junior running back Marlon Lucky to submit his name to a committee that will gauge his stock in the NFL Draft. “I’m sure he’ll apply. He should apply,” Pelini said of the paperwork involved to start the evaluation process. “Most guys do apply these days, to see where they would go.” Pelini said he’ll offer Lucky his opinion and put him in contact with the appropriate people to provide expert advice. After that, Pelini said, the decision is Lucky’s. The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 15. “I can’t control what he decides,” Pelini said. “We’d love to have him back, and I have my opinions on what he should do, but I’m not the one who makes the final decision. That’s up to the young man.” What’s Pelini’s opinion? “That’s between me and him,” he said. “But I do know this: Unless you’re a first-round draft pick, you should come back.” Lucky ran for 1,019 yards and caught a team-leading 75 passes for 705 yards this season. - Brian Rosenthal, Lincoln Journal Star

Kenny Phillips should make an excellent pro safety at either the strong or free position.

6' 2", 210 lbs, can fly and tackles really well. Also has pretty good ball skills.

Two years ago, West Virginia defensive lineman Johnny Dingle got the back of his right hand tattooed and it's been a constant source of motivation ever since.

"It's something that reminds me of what I want to do," he said. "I knew what I wanted to do in life and I said, 'I'll get this tattoo so I can stay focused.' If I think about making a bad decision, if I'm working out or practicing, I remember. It keeps me going. It makes me remember I can never do enough work and I have to keep on going to get where I need to go."

The tattoo is three letters: N-F-L.

Dingle revealed Thursday that he is entering the NFL Draft and won't return to school next season. A senior from Miami, Dingle originally committed to play at Florida but switched to WVU.

Boise State left tackle Ryan Clady will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft, he told the Idaho Statesman on Tuesday afternoon.

Clady, a 6-foot-6, 317-pounder from Rialto, Calif., has been projected as a first-round pick in April’s NFL Draft.

He said he made the decision after the Broncos’ 41-38 loss to East Carolina in the Hawaii Bowl.

“I was just kind of ready for a little change,” said Clady, who earned consensus All-America honors during his junior season.

Clady has signed with JL Sports, a sports management company, thus ending any chance that he had of returning to Boise State. Clady is believed to be the first Boise State football player to leave school early for the NFL.

“Picking an agent has been pretty stressful,” Clady said.

Clady said he plans to hold a press conference in Boise on Wednesday.

Clady said he spoke with family members and several Boise State coaches, including head coach Chris Petersen and offensive line coach Scott Huff, while making his decision. He also spoke with former line coach Sean Kugler, who is now with the Buffalo Bills.

“They were a little biased,” Clady said of Petersen and Huff. “But I just tried to talk to a couple of people who could give me advice about the situation.”

Those people included his father, Ross, with whom Clady is particularly close.

“He felt that it was up to me. He wants me to get my degree and try to take classes in the offseason and finalize that degree,” said Clady, who plans on taking a couple Internet classes this spring and is about a year away from graduating.

In the latest mock draft on ESPN.com, Clady is projected as the No. 7 pick in the first round to the Kansas City Chiefs.

With Clady’s departure, the Broncos will be without five of their top six offensive linemen from the 2007 team when they begin spring practice.

 Urrutia is not particularly athletic for such a big kid (although he's got decent speed), but he's been way too inconsistent this year to merit anything more than a late pick. His stock has plummeted over the last 4 months.

Charles leaving school to enter NFL draft

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas junior running back Jamaal Charles, who rushed for 1,619 yards this season, has decided to leave the Longhorns to enter the NFL draft.

Charles joined Ricky Williams, Earl Campbell and Cedric Benson as the only Longhorns to rush for over 1,500 yards in a season. He had 161 yards and two touchdowns in Texas' Holiday Bowl win over Arizona State. The Longhorns finished 10-3.

His biggest game of the season was a career-high 290 yards in a 28-25 win over Nebraska in which he had 216 yards and three long TDs in the fourth quarter.

Texas also announced Wednesday that assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Larry Mac Duff, who spent one season on coach Mack Brown's staff, has also decided to leave. Mac Duff joined the Texas staff after spending four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

I know many, including myself, banked on this draft being a big one for fantasy purposes for the past year or so. I was beginning to worry with the news that Jones and Charles might be staying in school. This is good news and now I hope Jones announces as well.

Maryland LB Erin Henderson is in per the Baltimore Sun.
Maryland linebacker Erin Henderson will forego his final year of eligibility and enter the 2008 NFL draft, coach Ralph Friedgen announced today."After discussing the matter with my family in recent days, we felt like the time was right to take the next step in my playing career," Henderson said. "It was a difficult decision because I enjoyed my days at Maryland and playing in the college environment. I will certainly miss my teammates and coaches, but will always be a Terp."Henderson and the Terps ended their season with a 21-14 loss to Oregon State Friday in the Emerald Bowl.A native of Aberdeen, Henderson earned All-American honors by four different media outlets and was a first-team All-ACC selection. He was a second-team All-ACC performer last year and missed the 2005 season with a knee injury."Erin has made a tremendous contribution to our program, both on and off the field," Friedgen said. "We wish him the best in the NFL."

Kind of bizarre Charles would come out. I just heard on radio that he graded out to a round 3 pick. Of all the possible Jr class players, I thought he had the most to gain by staying in school another year, experience & money wise. Whatever, I own him in my dynasty league where we can roster one college player, so I'm happy from that perspective.

A big combine can be worth a round or more, so that may be what he's banking on. Also, is he about to be supplanted by another, better RB?

I am a bit surprised by Charles coming out this year... if we get a few more surprise early RBs declarations this rookie RB class should be very very interesting.

Jamaal will test off the charts, especially in the speed drills. RB's that were productive in college and can post legit 4.3 in the 40 will rarely make it out of the 2nd round. If Chris Henry can go in the second round this year, it would be insane for Jamaal to fall to the third.

He wasn't at risk of being supplanted from anyone on the current roster, and Mack likes his Sr. players. I don't think they have a true blue chip RB in the recruiting class that would take snaps. I agree that he likely would have benefitted signifcantly from another year at Texas. He had some fumble problems and this was his first year as a feature back.

No, it was going to be the Jamaal Charles show next year. Other than Tony Hills (LT), I think the OL was coming back. Only Vondrell McGee (RS Frosh) pushing JC...not really a push, more like a nudge. I would think his better "bank" would be his senior season vs his combine results, since he's going to crush the combine this year or next. I hope to get more perspective tomorrow on the local talk shows. From what I heard, there was no issue with his GPA. I can only speculate there is a need for money in his family. Again, if thats the case, next year could have been the lottery for him.

Jamaal Charles makes this draft (and dynasty drafts) much more interesting.
I'm not sure about that. The RB position is really undervalued in NFL circles right now.
True, but even a 3rd round NFL RB could make a good 1st rounder in FF.
No argument there. From an NFL standpoint, it seems odd that he'd declare. He's not going to be selected ahead of McFadden, Mendenhall, and Stewart (and maybe Ray Rice). If he'd have waited until next year, he could have been one of the top backs available.Who knows what his reasons are? The lure of the NFL has to be awfully strong for these guys talented enough to make it.

Hard to pass up being an instant millionaire if you think you'll at least be a 3rd round pick.

I don't think thats not the case for 3rd rounders. I think he'll go in the 2nd but he is definetly leaving money on the table here

uhhhhhhh.....INJURY. Guys, especially RBs, don't want to risk an injury impacting their future $$$$$ prospects.....strike now while you can.....I never question a guy's decision on pursuing his dream....especially in a health-risk profession like football......I wish him well.......it's on his shoulders now of what he can make of himself at the next level, and frankly, most guys believe they really aren't going to get all that much better by another year in college......taking on more pounding and compiling more carries to shorten their (RB) lifespan........This guy doesn't slip past the 2nd Rd of the draft, NO DOUBT!......

Local talk reported today ( 1510, from Chip Brown ) that a source close to JC said he got at least one grading back of late 1st - 2nd. I'm guessing that plus a very nice Bowl game showing, convinced him to go now. All reports prior to this week had him coming back to Texas.

That is really optimistic, I hope he is not counting on first round.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia offensive guard Branden Albert will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter the NFL draft.

Cavaliers coach Al Groh said Albert informed him of his decision on Wednesday.

"We're supportive of whatever is in his best interest," Groh told The Associated Press.

The 23-year-old Albert, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound third-team All-American, started all 37 games that he played with the Cavaliers.

Virginia lost to Texas Tech 31-28 in the Gator Bowl on Tuesday

According to John Murphy of Yahoo Sports Syracuse WR Taj Smith, who potentially had a medical red-shirt year to use, has opted to enter the 2008 draft rather than returning for a fifth year in college. A former JC transfer who has had is share of injury problems in the past, averaged 18.7 tards per catch on 44 receptions. Smith is listed at 6-1, 187 and has been timed as fast as 4.42 in the 40-yard dash.

Isn't he a player that some think can swing out to tackle.

Meanwhile, according to John Murphy of Yahoo Sports Florida junior TE Cornelius Ingram has also decided to forego his senior year with the Gators and enter the 2008 draft. The 6-4, 235-pound Ingram finished fourth on the team with 34 receptions for 508 yards and seven touchdowns. Ingram has reportedly been timed in the sub-4.5 range in the 40-yard dash and has the ability to line up in a number of positions on the field including H-Back, slot and even wideout.

He's a tad smallish for a NFL TE at 6'4", 235, no?
