***OFFICIAL*** Washington Nationals ongoing thread (3 Viewers)

Trea Turner's magic date is May 30th. Hard to see him not being promoted the first week of June and put right into the lineup. .869 OPS in Cuse, 14 for 14 in sbs.

If I were a Mets fan I'd probably say that DeGrom dropping from 9.66 K/9 last season to 5.75 K/9 this season along with a slight uptick in walks and a jump in xFIP from 2.92 to 3.99 while losing 2.5 mph off his fastball, all the while complaining that he doesn't feel right a season after throwing 75 more innings than he ever had before would me a bit of a concern.

I might also say that Matz's recent elbow/forearm issues that sound exactly like the complaints you hear from pitchers before their UCL tears and they have to have TJ surgery would be a bit of a concern.

And I'd probably be a little concerned about Harvey's loss of almost 2 MPH off his fastball and his inability to get through a lineup a third time after going against doctor's orders last year and throwing 215 innings a season after TJ surgery.

You're probably right, though. I'm sure the rotation will continue to excel with nary a hiccup, and Neil Walker's 50 HR pace will continue unabated.  Enjoy your inevitable World Series triumph!
gil's brain probably short-circuited halfway through trying to read this.

The posting army has arrived! Haha

You 3 must have terrific lives spending them on fantasy message boards.  Doolittle and his 2 Dingleberries.

(9 hrs ago) Gonzalez (3-1) limited the Mets to one run on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 6.1 innings during Wednesday's 7-1 rout.

Yoenis Cespedes got him for a solo homer in the fourth inning, but otherwise Gonzalez mostly silenced the Mets -- that was their only extra-base hit off the veteran lefty. Eight starts into 2016, he's stunned the National League by delivering a 1.86 ERA, refreshingly outpitching his peripherals after posting an ERA more than half a point higher than his FIP in both 2014 and 2015. At the same time, his average fastball velocity has fallen off precipitously -- it's more than two mph lower than his norm. That's extra concerning when the stats already say regression should be expected. Gonzalez will draw a rematch with Bartolo Colon and the Mets on Monday.

I usually dismiss the ramblings of Bob and FP (a gem from last night- early in the game FP was talking about Revere's spot in the lineup and he said you don't change things when you're winning ... about a team that was on a three game losing streak at the time). But in this case I think they're right- Gio's taken something off his fastball on purpose rather then because of aging or a mechanical issue, and as a result his walk rate has dropped big time. His career rate is 9.9%, his best season as a Nat prior to this one was 8.6% at 2015, and he's at 6.5% this year.  That's a huge difference, comes a drop of almost 1.5 walks per 9.

He's due for a correction because the .257 BABIP and the 5.8% HR/FB rate seem a little too low to sustain, but they're not totally absurd numbers to the point that the correction will be super painful, IMO. You look at the other guys who've lost velocity on their fastball and most of them don't have the corresponding improvement to their walk rate like Gio does.

Also his hair this year is magnificent.

Didn't have anything negative to say about their character off the field.  Great.  Yay.  2 Thumbs up.  It's their on-the-field propensity to melt under the lights that's been a staple of theirs.  Hey end of the day, they're still way better then the crap Tigers.

Sigh.  Keep grasping at those straws.  I'll be concerned over Degrom and Matz when you're concerned about Scherzer's 4 era.  "But he's doing better now!"

The fact that Degrom is still dominating w/o striking guys out should scare you, not make you feel good.

If they had even a minuscule of concern over Matz, he wouldn't be sniffing the mound this Friday.

Lets be real, your offense is pathetic.  It's anemic outside of 2 guys.

And Neil Walker will hit 50 just like Murph will hit .400

:)
:lmao:

People have been tossing Ryan Braun around as a possible acquisition, but a much better fit would be Jay Bruce.  You could platoon he and Werth, or just shoot Werth into space for all I care.  He has a $13 mm team option next year, he's a good fielder, he's a streaky bat who could be a great guy to hit behind harper vs righties, and he wouldn't cost a ton in prospects.  Here is what an August 1st lineup would look like:

vs RHP

CF Revere

3B Rendon

RF Harper

LF Bruce

1B Zimmerman

2B Murphy

C Ramos

SS Turner

vs LHP

SS Turner

3B Rendon

CF Harper

1B Zimmerman

2B Murphy

LF Werth

C Ramos

CF Taylor

Bruce is definitely interesting if he keeps his renaissance season going.  Not sure I want 2014-2015 Jay Bruce.

Also depends if they want yet another lefty so they can platoon Werth or if they'd rather add a righty since they already have Harper and Murphy in the middle of the order.

The good news is that it seems like they are preparing to take on midseason salary based on them having a lower payroll than last season and deferring some of Werth's money, unlike the last few seasons when midseason moves all had to be salary neutral.

At the beginning of the game the Mets fans were chanting Harvey Harvey Harvey. Nats fans were trying to drown them out with boos or claps but man their were tons of Mets fans in the stadium. Then when Zim and Rendon went back to back in the 4th a bunch of Nats fans started in with a Harvey Harvey Harvey reprise.

Good stuff    :pokey:

I'm assuming most of those fans were part of "The 7 Line Army" which organized a last minute trip down to DC for the game in an attempt to show support for Harvey. That part didn't seem to go so well. But I can't imagine a more dedicated fan group in baseball than those knuckleheads.

By most reports they were great guests and seem like a good group of fans.  Heard a couple stories of chants aimed at Bryce about the choking, but that's hardly the worst we've seen from "invading" NL East fan bases. You just gotta understand that the Harvey/Strasburg stuff is the culmination of four years of having to listen to criticism of "the Strasburg Shutdown" every time the team has disappointed in any way since 2012.  The recent extension followed by the two head to head matchups and Harvey clearly struggling after not following the TJ recovery protocol is our first moment of payoff on revenge on that front.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this new rivalry a lot more than the Phils in 2011-2012 and the Braves in 2013-2014.  Phils fans absolutely took over the place because our season ticket base wasn't big enough to balance it out at the time and were totally obnoxious in the process (I really like Phillies fans generally, have had great experiences at Citizens Bank and on the internets, but the ones who invaded were huge dooshbags).  And Braves fans .. well, you know.

Not sure if it's because of just how bad Harvey has struggled, and all the focus being on that, but I didn't hear a thing about Nats fans giving him crap and frankly I didn't think of the link between the shutdown and lack of so it's all cool with me when it's aimed at on field stuff. I don't like the manufactured rivalry stuff that we tend to see these days and part of me would lose interest* if this turns into a TOR-TEX thing.

I like the teams matching up too. I think the Nats are a nice combination of being fun to watch when you're not matched up against them, while also having a few of those guys who will annoy the #### out of you in a late season series to keep things interesting and keep the competitive juices flowing. After the previous few years, Mets fans are very happy to have all these games mean something.

Has anything been said on promoting Trea Turner?  May 30th has arrived and they can't keep running .199 Espinosa out there.
Nothing yet.  Barely educated guess- they have to wait a little while so they don't end up getting sued by the players' union for manipulating service time. My guess is that they give Espi at least until the end of this road trip, which is a fairly soft one and doesn't have any divisional games left after tonight, before making the move.

If there's no move soon, they may as well just wait for the Super-2 date in July.  I hope he comes up before that though.

ETA: Kind of curious what the corresponding move will be too.  Espi might have an option left, but he probably makes sense to keep around on the 25-man as a defensive replacement.  I guess they could DFA Drew, but that seems a waste.

Espinosa keeps hitting HR (4th this week tonight) and Turner will stay in the minors.

My guess is Drew is gone when Turner comes up and Espinosa becomes the utility guy that plays plenty.

I have heard on the radio, the Nats are in no hurry to promote Turner.  As long as they are winning, they will go with Danny.  The Nats apparently believe that Turner will benefit from more time in the minors, so there is no rush.

If he goes 0-fer the weekend they might send him back, but if he shows any life at all, he's gotta be here to stay.
I would say that he is a keeper.

Murphy playing first seems a good sign for that too. I was thinking they would keep Clint Robinson around to back up Zim. But they could probably DFA Clint and send him down to AAA. I don't think anyone would claim.

And reaching base 4 times Friday night gets Trea Turner a spot on the bench Saturday.   :wall:

I love me some Trea too, and I'd like to see them make the move pretty soon.  But if we're gonna go crazy over 5 plate appearances we probably should also note that Espinosa has a .928 OPS over the last week, and that's without getting a single hit on a ball in play.  He's a bad hitter but he's also been an unlucky one this year.  His BABIP is usually around .300 but it's at .220 on the year, and his K rate is actually the lowest of his career while his walk rate is as high as ever. He's due for a correction.

Maybe they can convert Turner to CF.  If Hamilton and Desmond can both make the move quickly ...
