***OFFICIAL*** Washington Nationals ongoing thread (1 Viewer)

Zimmerman, Ramos, and now Harper out. Span was out for a week. Espinosa leaves the game early today. Hairston has been out. Fister has missed a month. Jordan removed from the game early today.

This team is banged up. I assume LF will be a Frandsen/McLouth platoon but I hope they let Souza get some ABs. Crap Frandsen might be playing some infield if Espinosa misses time.

Hope for above .500 on July 4th and go from there. Just like last year.

And to think people thought the Braves would struggle due to injuries. Sure would be nice if there was the outfield equivalent of an Ervin Santana out there that we could sign.

Still wonder why baseball players go head first. Hamilton has broke his arm a couple of years ago and tore up his thumb this year. Harper tore up his thumb. Torn thumb ligaments have to be one of the worst injuries for a hitter.

Ha. Matt Williams rear ended on the way to Nats Park this morning while on live radio and never stopped his interview. He then gave some play by play of the cops chasing the guy because it turned into a hit and run.

Ramos is back. If he's 100% he and Fister are bigger returns than Zimmerman/Harper based on their value over the Nats' replacements. Looking for this team to go .500 on the road trip then get rolling in the second half of the month.

When is Zimmerman due back?

Where will he play? Rendon and Desmond aren't sitting. Espinosa doesn't deserve to sit but I imagine he's going to. Wish one of these guys could play LF until Harper returns.

Nothing new on Zimmerman. He's a good three weeks away at least. I suspect the situation will resolve itself one way or another by then.

Personally I'd go, from right to left across the IF: LaRoche-Rendon-Desmond-Zimmerman vs. righties, Zimmerman-Espinosa-Desmond-Rendon vs. lefties, and LaRoche-Espinosa-Desmond-Rendon when Fister is pitching assuming he's throwing 54% ground balls like he did last year.

Hey, look at that. Strasburg giving up early runs again.
One soft "line drive" and three slow rollers that found holes. Can't blame him one bit for that inning. If either of the last two ground balls was a couple feet to the left or right the Nats turn a double play and everyone loves him again.

Espinosa, on the other hand, may be turning into a problem instead of an asset. Those good early ABs were fool's gold; he's back to striking out 29% of the time but without walking 8% of the time like he used to do. Just struck out with the bases loaded and one out to bail out Haren, looked an absolute mess.

Thanks. MLB Gameday doesn't give me that info. But, still, his early innings have been a problem. Good thing, tough, is that he almost always bounces back and can string together several innings of goose eggs.

Yeah I figured, had to tell my buddies watching on Gameday the same thing. Nothing hit all that hard, just some really bad BABIP luck. Contrast with the Nats' first inning- they were tattooing the ball everywhere but LaRoche's lack of speed and some bad luck left them with the same 2 runs.

Anthony Rendon doing his best Ryan Zimmerman impression at third.

Fister giving up a ton of fly balls, some of them traveling over the fence.

Getting pummeled by his old team?

I know I was stoked when they traded for him, I thought he was an excellent young left hander (still do), but he is a knob and I don't really like the guy.

That said, #### happens in the heat of competition.. I'm sure the guys he blew up at have already let it go.

This team is a mess
Pick a team, any team. Remove three hitters as productive as Zimmerman, Harper and LaRoche/Ramos (I think they shared the field for two games) from their starting eight. Let me know how they look afterwards.

Whenever a team suffers a rash of huge injuries like this everyone gets sad when they happen because they know the team will suffer big time, but then somehow forgets that sentiment a couple weeks later when the losses start to pile up. Did anyone think this team was gonna be 10 games over .500 at the end of May without these guys? I said before my hope is that they stay around .500 until June 1 then hopefully get healthy and make a run. That's still my hope. Anyone who expected much more from a lineup with only one guy with an OBP over .333 was fooling themselves. You can't score runs when you make outs like that.

Ryan Zimmerman is doing outfield drills with the team. With his thumb, he cannot field ground balls or throw. There is some speculation that he could play LF when he returns.

I'm not sure how this team has stayed two games over .500 with a lineup that could easily pass for a 2014 Syracuse Chiefs lineup with a couple major leaguers on rehab assignment, but I have a sinking feeling that the reckoning is coming over the next three weeks or so.

That 10 game road trip coming up looks to be the time when the wheels could come off. Maybe Treinen pitches well and they can float along for a couple more weeks.

He couldn't throw before he hit the DL. I can't imagine how offline his tosses will be when he's chucking them in from left. I want you to throw the next one at the mascot.

Well, one big difference is that when you're throwing from first the target can't move to catch the ball. Another big difference is that you make far fewer throws of consequence per game.

I hate that this team is so predictable.

From Tom Boswell's article in the Washington Post today, a quote from Ryan Zimmerman:

Down the road,” he said, not specifying whether that was in days or years, “left field is probably better than first base for me.”
Zimmerman also talked about how rough it has been at 3rd base the past couple of years, working so hard to do what come so naturally before.

There is no mention of timeline in the article, but it sounds like a position change is coming sooner rather than later for Zimmerman.

At least not every break is going against us. 0-1 over the last three days and picked up a full game in the standings.

Sounds like Zimm could be back as soon as Tuesday, too. Wouldn't be surprised to see him in left until Harper comes back.

That's good but figures it comes right as McLouth starts to hit. And Espinosa can't buy a hit right now. Whatever I'll take Zimm's bat back.

Got two free tickets for tonight's game if anyone wants them. 133 Row E on the aisle bordering 132. I can email them to you. Just send me a PM before someone in my office claims them and they're yours.

These look like really nice seats. On another day, this could have worked out.

Looks like Ryan Zimmerman will be starting in LF tonight and learning the position on the fly in the majors.

This is a huge shift for one of your highest paid players to switch positions with so little practice.

Tickets gone. I'll be watching Zimmerman in LF tonight from home with the rest of you.

I'm not all that worried about how he'll be in left, I'm more worried about what the defense looks like when Harper comes back. Either Span comes out or Zim goes back to 3B and Rendon to 2B. Neither option is ideal.

Someone will probably get hurt before then.

I see rotating days off from Laroche, Span, and Espy (assuming Zim can play a dozen or so at 3B and 1B). Some random days when Werth and Harper sit as well.

Yup. An injury will probably resolve this, but if not they can just mix it up like you say. Sit LaRoche if we're facing a lefty, sit Span if we've got a ground ball guy going, sit Espi if we need some extra offensive punch, etc. Lots of options based on trends and matchups.

If everyone is healthy, my guess is it primarily goes back to Zim at 3B and Rendon at 2B when Harper comes back. It seems like a way to keep McLouth out of the lineup for now. It's a defensive downgrade when Harper comes back, but Espinosa doesn't deserve regular playing time either. I could see them sprinkling in Zim in LF or 1B depending on matchups though.
