Really liked Kilgore's take on what to do with Zimmerman. He's right- just his presence on the bench is enough to possibly prevent opponents from going to a LOOGY to get Harper or LaRoche late in games.

So far this season, Redskins are tied for 23rd in the NFL in local TV ratings. Of course, being 23rd in the NFL is still a really good rating and the Nats have struggled to get good ratings (thanks Obama Angelos!), but it will still be interesting to see what happens Monday night with local ratings.

I am not clear on why you blame Angelos for the Nats poor tv ratings. MASN does a decent job. The Nats decide on the broadcast personnel.dgreen said:

I am not a FP Santangelo or Bob Carpenter fan, but with a short history, you can't get an icon like Jim Palmer or Sonny Jurgensen for your broadcasts. FP actually played for the Expos, but that does little for the fans in DC. Ray Knight is the best on-air guy for the Nats.

Unless he is referring to the money from said ratings and thus blaming Angelos is to blame for screwing the Nats out of a lot of money on rights fees.

I don't know what I'm talking about. I haven't really followed the story at all regarding the Nats, Angelos, and MASN. I think that deal has been mentioned when I've read about low Nats' ratings, but maybe it's irrelevant. I just wanted to blame someone for something.

SP (4): Strasburg, JZ, Fister, and Gio
RP (8): Storen, Clippard, Stammen, Roark, Barrett as righties and Thornton, Blevins, and Detwiler as lefties
Starters (8): Ramon, Laroche, Cabrera, Desmond, Rendon, Harper, Span, Werth
Bench(5): Zimmerman, Lobaton, Espinosa, Frandsen, M. Taylor
I think Detwiler makes it as another lefty for Belt and Sandoval. I think Taylor makes it as the last OF over Schierholz and Hairston.

MASN doesn't do a very good job promoting the Nats. It's pretty clear where their focus lies. They try to keep up appearances, but every once in a while their obvious bias shines through, like when they trolled DC fans with "This is Birdland" shots of DC (imagine them throwing up a "This is Natstown" image of Baltimore on a broadcast) to when they used to use an on-screen scorebox that read "WSH" for the Nats vs. "O's" for the Orioles, to the fact that they're too lazy to come up with two different hashtags for the teams so they just took the alliterative "#IBacktheBirds" and changed it to the awkward "#IBacktheNats." There's a ton of other examples too, as regular Sports Bog readers know. Not hard to conclude that their internal focus is also biased towards the Os when they slip up outwardly so often.
I used to hate the Orioles for for the whole MASN nightmare, but someone said earlier this year Angelos doesn't use the dirty money Selig bought him off with to make the O's better, he just pockets it and both teams suffer. If that's true we have a common enemy.
Anyway, as for the ratings it's part MASN- a network nobody just stumbles across while channel-surfing like they might with Comcast Sports- but mostly the fact that the team just hasn't been here long enough to build a solid base of casual fans. They've got an impressive number of hard core fans given the fact that they've only existed for 10 years and have never won a playoff series, as the attendance shows. But they don't have casual viewers like you see in other cities. No big deal, it'll come if they win something.

Seems like a waste of a spot. I can't imagine a situation where I'd feel comfortable using Soriano in a playoff game.
The only two times you'd use the 8th man out of the pen is (1) a one-hitter matchup, or (2) if there's a marathon extra inning game. In both cases I'd rather have Detwiler, a lefty who can throw multiple innings if need be.
I am happy they included Blevins, though. He's a perfect postseason weapon with his numbers against lefties.

This shows that Williams doesn't believe Det can be a LOOGY. With Roark in the pen, I guess he thinks he doesn't need another long reliever. Williams really doesn't like Det.
Even Treinan would be better than Soriano.

Not sure if this was more soul crushing than game 5 of 2012 but it is damn close. Matt Williams is never going to let that decision to pull Zimmermann go in the 9th.
Feel sorry for Storen who is probably going to get a ton of heat for blowing another huge playoff game.
I think Fister can win game 3 but Gio is going to struggle trying to stay in the game for game 4. Especially with this awful hitting the Nationals are doing

Yeah, this one hurts. 2012 was a bit of a bonus, pre-peak year, but thought this would be the year they'd make the jump.
If Zim is at all capable of playing 3B, he should be in the lineup on Monday. If he gets reinjured, so what at this point. Need his bat to try to get something started. And Cabrera's stupid ejection should be worthy of a benching anyway.

I feel a lot better about a possible Game 4 than Game 3. The Giants struggle against lefties plus they burned Petit- they guy I thought they should start in Game 4- in the extra inning affair and now we'd get Vogelsong,who is mediocre. Unfortunately I don't think it's gonna get there.

Also, the fan-shaming garbage from other fans- Baltimore fans in particular- after the game was just awful. It was a perfect storm of negative factors that led to people leaving. It started out as a beautiful afternoon and nobody has any reason to dress for temps in the 40s and biting wind. People also brought their kids because it was a 5:30 start, they obviously weren't gonna stick it out for 6.5 hours in the cold without food. And then of course there's DC's sports history over the last twenty years, which is something I don't think any other city can understand at this point- not just the lack of a title, but not getting remotely close to one despite having teams in all four major sports. The Wizards winning a meaningless 4/5 playoff series this year and moving on to play for the right to get creamed by LeBron James in the conference finals was arguably the greatest playoff triumph in DC since 1998, depending on how you feel about the Caps and their small handful of first round series wins before their inevitable second round collapses.
I also don't think that many people left. Maybe 10,000. A lot of people left their seats but stayed in the stadium. My old man came with me- he couldn't sit in the seats any more by the 17th because he's old and he's a big guy, so we spent the last two innings circling the concourse and watching from various vantage points. There were people huddled in every corner of the stadium that was shielded from the wind. People were lingering in the bathrooms and listening to Charlie and Dave to keep warm. There was at least 100 people in a line for hot chocolate line at the two vendors we saw that opened back up. The Red Porch Bar in CF was literally as crowded as a metro train at rush hour. And when it finally ended after midnight the metro was packed. I was actually impressed with the effort.

I love Baltimore, but its major inferiority complex is a huge downer. I'm not sure why they think the whole world is out to get them - I guess it stems from being the overlooked little brother in the DC-Philly-NY-Boston megaplex. People were livid at the TBS broadcast, and how one-sided in favor of Detroit they thought it was.
I also don't understand why the same yokels that hate the Redskins and scoff at the Nationals turn around and are such huge Capitals fans. I'm not a Nationals fan in any meaningful sense of the word, but I kind of follow them and certainly would love to see them win whenever it doesn't conflict with the Orioles.
Unfortunately I don't think it will ever change. People in DC laugh in surprise when I tell them that Baltimore thinks they're Washington's rival. But people in Baltimore think it's a blood feud.

Yeah, he's an embarrassment. A Baltimore local yokel native who actually used to do great stuff tearing down Vinny Cerrato as the Post's Redskins beat guy. But he used to be a self-proclaimed "big Red Sox fan" who now acts like he's Mr. Oriole and is a very unappealing Twitter troll.

My dislike for the Orioles is almost entirely Angelos-based. If there was a way for the city to win the World Series without us having to watch Bud Selig hand that trophy to the man who successfully fought the very existence of DC baseball for most of my lifetime (and had to get bought off with the team's TV rights to finally get him to give in) I'd probably be pulling for them.

Not just an NFL reporter, but a guy who used to be a Redskins beat reporter for the Washington Post and was constantly accused of having an anti-Skins bias. At the time I thought people were just whining- the Skins have been dysfunctional for many years and as the beat reporter it was kind of his job to point that out. But now it looks like those people were right.
It's weird that he doesn't seem to realize or mind either. Reminds me of that guy who wrote the SI article trying to take down OK State football and then it was revealed that he was a huge fan of another Big 12 team and talked #### about OK State all the time, and the biggest work of this guy's life became a laughingstock. By doing this he's basically sacrificing his ability to ever be taken seriously if he does any quality work that's negative about the Skins or other DC sports teams,

That would be the ideal lineup but I just don't think they're comfortable with Zim's ability to play 1B, something that's especially important with a ground ball guy on the mound.
My guess is that Harper sits, or if they really want to roll the dice they sit Span and put Harper in CF and Zim in LF. Span's been awful in the postseason, but he did draw a walk in the extra inning (would have scored the winning run if the Rendon liner to the wall was two feet higher) and hit a bullet over 1B that Belt snagged. I'm guessing MW is feeling the pressure to put a run-producing lineup out there though- people will forgive a 6-5 loss more than another 3-2 or 2-1 loss.
