Yeah. I hope there's a lot more to it than Rosenthal's tweet that they were angry over losing an arb difference of $200k.

I think they are pretty high on Grace and Rivero, who could provide lefty bullpen depth. A bit surprised they went with Martin above them, but I guess they have their reasons.

When does Desmond get a day off? I think it may happen today (guessing) with the last game on the road before the weekend homestand.

Just shook my head at Treinen - 2 errors on one play by the same player?

It's a Catch 22. This happens every April so clearly he needs to play his way out of it, but he's absolutely killing the team right now. You can hang at least 2 losses on his defensive miscues on very simple plays.

It's a fairly close call. The power is nice, as is the knowledge that his defense will inevitably improve rather than decline. And you want to see the guy of the future get his time in on this level now. But I think 70 or so points of OBP and the grinding ABs at the top of the lineup outweigh that by just a bit. Either way, Span's return is not saving this team. Rendon will do that.

 
Span will certainly help out in CF; not the easiest plays Taylor has been screwing up these last few days but Span would've caught a bunch of these flyballs that are dropping. Looks like Taylor is just not comfortable out there.

American League baseball is exhausting. Can't even relax with a 6 run lead, and no easy innings.

Also this Red Sox lineup is impressive. They have to move for Hamels, don't they? Please? Maybe tonight?

 
Maybe I should take back my complaint over Rafael Martin being called up. I guess I'll replace it with Taylor Jordan confusion; seems kind of redundant with Roark.

ETA: Nevermind. It looks like Rivero is coming up today.

Who is Rivero replacing? Jordan replaced stammen and Martin replaced Cedeno.

With Jordan the bullpen has three starters if you count Roark and Treinen.

I haven't seen that on Twitter yet, but my guess is Jordan. Maybe they were concerned Roark would have been on too short of a rest if Gio needed an early hook.

 
Way too early for big games, but winning the Cole Hamels matchup tonight to kick off a four game home series against Philly would sure help accelerate their recovery from this slow start. I'm guessing the Nats will be -200 or more the rest of the weekend, could restore order very quickly if they win this one.

There you go. Barrett gets the 8th inning tonight. Would love to see that move stick and put Treinen in a 6th/7th inning role.

 
Gonna be interesting to see how quickly this fresh-faced newcomer Kris Bryant can catch up to that overhyped bust Bryce Harper's career HR pace. He needs just 57 and also a time machine to make him nine months younger.

I think he'll be fine. He's always been solid if unspectacular. One blown save and one narrowly completed one doesn't change that.

Last year at this time everyone was panicked about Tyler Clippard, who gave up runs in 4 of his first 7 appearances, two of which ended up being losses to the Braves. He went another 9 weeks before giving up another one.

I will take the over, if that means later.

The Nationals are very thin in the bullpen and they really don't have many options. The only real option is Casey Janssen, who may be back in a few weeks. But that is pretty speculative since they have not seen him pitch much.

The only other pitcher on the roster I would even consider for the closer position is Tanner Roark.

I think they will give Storen a really long leash.

They'll straighten out and get it together. I'm not too concerned about how they'll play going forward, especially when Rendon gets back. I'm more concerned with the hole they've already dug themselves. 7 games is a lot,especially because the Mets look like a decent team. I don't think this is last year's Brewers getting by on smoke and mirrors until they inevitably get run down. They have a respectable lineup and a very good rotation.

I am not concerned about being 7 games back.

The season is really long. I think if they are near 0.500 on June 1, they are easily in striking distance of making the playoffs or winning the division. It's not like the Mets are going to win 100 games this year. They need to stay in the race while figuring out how to address these issues.

Also, for all of the injuries the Nats have had, none (except Stamman) have been season ending. They are annoying, but they should not derail the season.

 
Ugly stuff. Hopefully the Bullets/Caps keep playing on the same night as the Nats so we don't have to watch the latter.

 
In this game, Matt Williams made a really bad decision. In the second inning, down 2-1, Cole allowed the #7 and #8 hitters to reach base. The pitcher sac bunts and advances the runner. Williams intentionally walks Nick Markakis so he can pitch to the #2 and #3 hitters in the order.

It can't be right to intentionally walk a batter in the 2nd inning. You have to have some confidence that you pitcher can get this batter out. And the walk someone so you can get deeper into the heart of the order is non-sense. If you give up a run and get out of the inning, that is ok. Williams is managing like it was the 8th or 9th inning already.

The move blew up in his face. But since the Nats pulled it out, it did not cost them win.

:goodposting: I lost my mind when he did this. It's stupid enough for the reasons you state, but especially considering you're talking about a rookie guy clearly struggling with nerves and command. Why take away his margin for error by loading the bases? Also exceptionally stupid because the #1 and #2 hitters for Atlanta are Markakis and Simmons, and the #3 hitter (who was assured of batting barring double play by the IBB) is Freddie ####king Freeman.

I actually lost my mind about it twice- once when it happened and again when the score was 11-10 and I thought it might be the margin of victory.
