***OFFICIAL*** Washington Nationals ongoing thread (4 Viewers)

Just a heads up from a nerdy schedule watcher:  the sweep of the Marlins this week makes it pretty likely that the Nats will clinch the division at home, which they've only done once before (and that was with a loss).  Magic number is 16 and they have 17 games before they leave for a nine game road trip (after which they close the season with four at home vs the Pirates). The last series before they leave for that trip is a weekend series vs the Dodgers, so probably gonna sell out especially if they're closing in. If they keep pulling away from the Marlins there's three vs the Braves before that, all midweek night games, tix should be cheap and easy to come by.

It's way more fun thinking about his than reading the recent Bryce Harper rehab news.

VICTOR ROBLES CALLUP ALERT

(definitely just because they want him to get an early taste of the majors and not because they're pessimistic about Harper and want to explore OF depth options for the postseason right it's definitely the first thing and not possibly the second thing no way)

As I was thinking about it last night, he could be a good guy to have on the postseason roster, maybe filling a role like Terrance Gore filled for the Royals a few years ago.  I could see a scenario where Adam Lind comes in as a pinch hitter, then Robles comes in as a pinch runner and/or for defensive purposes.  He's not as fast as Gore, but certainly faster than Lind.  It does not seem like a bad option to have anyway.

Definitely hope he's the 5th OF if Goodwin is out.  Or 4th if Harper doesn't make it back.

Tougher in the NL, where you need to save bench bats to pinch-hit for pitchers if it goes extra innings.  Plus Dusty said he's hesitant to put a guy that young in the sort of spots someone off the bench can get in in the postseason. Although it didn't seem to hurt Difo's development after he made the final out last year when the tying run on second and the winning run on first in Game 5. They need someone from among Stevenson, Bautista and Robles, I wouldn't mind it.

Another unorthodox move I'd like to see would be Severino over Lobaton.  Severino could pinch-run for Wieters if he got on base in a high-leverage spot and at this point he seems like he's just as good as Loby anyway, maybe better.

Sounds like Harper is just sick versus a set back with the injury.  Not great, but better than worst case thoughts upon seeing the lineup.

Harper pulled early last night after Dusty saw something he didn't like.  Harper's status for tonight is up in the air.  Hopefully nothing serious.

He's looked a little uncertain to me the last two nights but I think he'll mostly be fine. I think he was pulled two nights ago according to plan. Dusty had said he'd go 3-5 innings, he saw a chance to get him a third AB so he left him in after 4 but that was enough.  Went 5 last night, will get today off, then probably ramp it up after that so he plays a full game Saturday or Sunday.

I love the idea of batting him second. Whole lineup falls into place when he does that. I'd rather see Rendon between Harper and Murphy to break up the lefties but that's small potatoes.

If I've been tracking the rumors and whatnot accurately I think we're looking at at 25 man roster of:

IF: Zimmerman, Murphy, Turner, Rendon, Lind, Kendrick, Difo, Wieters, Lobaton

OF: Werth, Taylor, Harper, Goodwin, Robles

SP: Strasburg, Gonzalez, Scherzer, Roark

RP: Doolittle, Madson, Kintzler, Albers, Perez, Blanton, Romero

Happy to see Goodwin and Robles making it.

Trying not to get my hopes up too much after years of watching the Nats (and other D.C. sports teams) flounder in the playoffs. But it does seem like their best roster, and chance, yet.

I have mastered the art of not getting my hopes up at this point.  They haven't thrown a pitch yet and I'm already transitioning to Stage 4 of Kubler-Ross.

They went with Solis over Blanton btw.  Four of the seven relievers are lefties.  I guess it didn't really matter with the flexible Cubs roster so they just went with the guys they trust the most

Man are we going to regret not using Max in game 2 now?   Granted Gio has been great and is more healthy (maybe?) but they might as well not board the plane to Chicago if they are down 2-0

So on the day that they don't get a hit until the 2nd damn inning they suspend their hitting coach.  So a bad day got a ton worse.  Shame because Stras was incredible.   If we are expecting our pitchers to hold the Cubs to under 2 runs then yeah big trouble

Holy ####

The team said Jones' suspension with pay was due to a pending legal matter that the club is investigating. Court documents obtained by USA TODAY Sports spell out what that legal matter appears to be: a revenge porn lawsuit that lists both Jones and the Nationals as defendants.

Dusty is worried how long Max can go on Monday.  The Nats just can't have nice things.  Really need Gio to have a great game today but yeah the bats need to come alive today against Lester.

Wondering if Game 4 will be Strasburg on short rest or Roark.

Why keep 4 lefties if you aren't going to use them against Rizzo?
Replace Rizzo with Harper and the question applies tonight for the Cubs. I have no idea why Joe didn't bring in Montgomery to face Harper, and then Edwards to face Zimmerman, instead of doing the reverse.

Yeah, I thought Montgomery would get Harper-Rendon-Murphy and then he'd go to Wade Davis (Edwards was already in the game).  I can't believe he let Zimmerman hit against a lefty but in fairness I'm not overly familiar with their bullpen either.

If they don't build a statue for Ryan Zimmerman when he retires they should burn the park down.   As great as Bryce is and as how important Werth has been, Zimmerman is the true history of this team.

Now what looked like a bad decision starting Max in game 3 is an great decision IF HE IS HEALTHY.

I honestly think that was better than the Werth walk-off in terms of the experience at the park. That game was tied and he was the leadoff man, so the vibe was all hope, no dread. This was a massive shift in the team's fate over the course of a half-hour, and the park went from dead to completely bananas. Waited 12 years for 30 minutes like that.

Need to see some guys get going.  Turner, Werth, Weiters, Murphy are something like 1-27.
Turner in particular has looked like a mess at the plate.  I'm not really sure what he's swinging at.

Werth's and Murphy's approaches seem decent, so hopefully they get it going.  Weiters is just Weiters.

Murphy and Werth have had some quality at bats so I'm sure something will fall into place there.  Turner worries me since when he gets on base it really gets the team going, he looks awful at the plate so far.

Kolko says ball is flying out to left today.  Should be advantage Nats with Cubs using a lefty lineup against Scherzer and nats having 7 righties against Quintana.

Don't have a problem with them pulling Max.  But yeah why the #### are you using Solis.  He is at best their #4 reliever in this series

If you’re gonna go lefty on lefty then solis sfoild have pitched to zobrist.  And kintzler should have come in as soon as cubs put the righty in for schwarber.  Terrible.

Can't really blame Perez for letting a bloop hit see through.  Either Taylor or Turner should have gone harder.

We can blame Dusty all we want for the pitching decision but the reality is that in Game 1 AND 3 the Nats have had maybe 2 hits worth a damn.

Lack of hitting is why they lost those games and it hasn't been just one guy.

I don't blame Turner or Taylor. It was a well-placed hit that I don't think anyone could have gotten to.

I probably would have just walked around Rizzo and kept Kintzler in.

Bats are certainly a big part of the problem too, but frustrating to lose a 2-1 game as a result of hits given up by Solis and Perez, with neither Madson nor Doolittle taking the mound.

Solis coming in bothers me but I just don't know if Max could have gotten out of that inning without at least giving up 1 run.

I had no idea the batting was this awful

Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann collectively have 2.79 ERA in 7 postseason starts for #Nats. Team is 0-7 in those games.

That is what happens when you face top pitchers and not the Phillies, Mets, Braves and Marlins almost 80 times a year.
