Not sure if anyone has mentioned it or not, but Shanny could have lost his locker room with the "possibly benching RG3." Not that everyone is in RG3's corner, but basically he just threw the entire OL under the bus and many others.

The players are well aware that their coach has quit on them this year and is blaming them. They're not stupid.

I still think you could conceivably play Cousins without it having to be perceived as some Machiavellian ploy to get fired or to undermine Robert.
Well, I think it's clear that a move to Cousins would have nothing to do with Griffin's health, so at the very least I think you have Shanahan lying. Lying happens in the NFL, so I guess that's not necessarily a huge deal. But, if it's not about giving Griffin a healthy offseason, then what is it about? I think the two main options are:

1) Machiavellian ploy to get fired. This theory is supported by the conveniently-timed stories the last few weeks and the reputation Mike has with using the media to release rumors.

2) Shanahan believes Cousins gives them the best chance to win these last three games. Shanahan knows he's gone after the season and it would be best for his future to get some wins here.

I would tend to gravitate towards the much more sensible #2 theory, but I'm buying #1 a bit. I don't think I tend to buy into the Machiavellian stuff, but for some reason I am here.

Does anyone else have a feeling that RG3 is still going to start this week?
No. I'm fairly confident it will be Cousins. I think that's what Mike wants and Dan isn't going to interfere.

Glazer is reporting that it is Cousins unless Griffin can convince Mike.

You gotta admit, this is a waaaayyyy more interesting way to go 3-10 than, say, what the Texans are doing. You'd think they've never seen a reality TV show down in Houston. Can't manufacture any drama at all.

We even tried to include them in our drama, but they quickly squashed that and faded out of the news.

Dan Snyder/Mike Shanahan: Made for reality TV

Bob McNair/Gary Kubiak: Not so much

Kubiak even paid for a full page ad in Monday's paper thanking the great fans in Houston for all their support. Signed by he and his wife. Classy move and no controversy.

Well Richie Rich says he won't interfere in the QB decision but his best little buddy is going to be pissed. I guess we will find out how much stroke he really has.

This is going to be an interesting RG3 press conference today.

Shanny is doing everything in his power to make Synder look good with this which seemed impossible about 3 months ago.

#### Shanahan.
How many teams bench their 2nd year QB out of fear of him getting hurt in the last 3 games? Should we bench Morris too? He could get hurt. What about Williams? He's by far our best OL, wouldn't want him to go down with an injury now. What about Kerrigan? He's actually playing hurt. He should rest so he doesn't get hurt.

This is just one big ####### joke. I hope Shanny never coaches again.

 Who is his best little buddy?

Griffin shouldn't have a PC today. Cousins should. Right? I mean, I assume they'll make Griffin available, but if he's not the starter then he shouldn't have a PC. He'll be inactive the rest of the way.

Best little buddy = RG3.

You would think that Cousins is doing the press conference but RG3 is the one people want to know about so they will put him out. If they are going to play this game of chicken, then Synder should have RG3 do the press conference so he could completely crap on Shanny in that passive aggressive way he loves to do.

RG3 will take high road...it's coaches decision, I will help and support Kirk as much as I can. Maybe even throw in his newest line "I'll go to battle with these guys anyday."

This is my biggest problem with it. If Shanahan's motives are what he claims (which of course they're not), you're basically telling the other good young talent that they don't matter that much to you.

The media was pretty good about nailing him to the wall as best they could on Monday, but I was disappointed that nobody pursued this line of questioning. Maybe they'll get him with it later this week. "Coach, why do you think it's worth benching RGIII to protect his health for 2014 and beyond, but don't feel the need to do the same with Morris or Kerrigan or Garcon?" "Are you going to leave Reed on the bench the rest of the season too for the same reasons?" That kind of stuff. I want to see him squirm.

Well not only that, but what does it say to Cousins? "Hey Kirk, we know our OL is complete ####, we don't want Robert to get hurt, so we're going to throw you out there. Good luck, though!"

Exactly. Which should also be followed with questions about why he's giving one player preferential treatment over another because he's supposedly against that sort of thing.

I think he has a PC today, too, so those questions could be coming. It was kind of interesting that his postgame comment about Griffin didn't create any buzz and Monday's PC didn't have a ton of follow-up questions either. In any other week, those comments would have created a frenzy, but all of the focus was on him reportedly quitting and cleaning out his office.

Shanahan has this set up to try to get Griffin to complain to Snyder.

Shanahan reportedly plans to sit Griffin and go with Cousins — unless Griffin can convince Shanahan otherwise.

The situation has been explained in a series of tweets from Jay Glazer of FOX, who reports that it appears Cousins will get the start this week, but that it won’t be a done deal until practice starts on Wednesday. Glazer adds that Shanahan could change his mind, if Griffin convinces Shanahan otherwise.

If, as Shanahan explained it on Monday, the goal of shutting down Griffin would be to protect him for the 2014 offseason program, what could Griffin say to change Shanahan’s mind? I strenuously object?

This is now about making Griffin more than a passive pawn in the head coach’s power play. Shanahan apparently hopes that Griffin will go to Snyder and complain about the manner in which Shanahan is disrespecting the quarterback who, after Shanahan recklessly left him in a January playoff game with an injured knee that eventually imploded, has busted his ### to get healthy and make a positive contribution.

While the blame for the current fiasco lands in the laps of Shanahan, Snyder, and Griffin, it’s now becoming obvious that Shanahan is simply pushing buttons in the hopes of getting fired — and getting paid.

I wonder how much of Cousins starting is to evaluate him when he coaches his next team. If the rumors about the Shanny's to Houston are even remotely true then I figure they will go for a QB as well.

The other conspiracy theory is that he think Cousins isn't worth it either and is putting him out there to kill his value. Although I thought Cousins was a Shanny draft pick while it is still not clear who wanted RG3

But yeah this is clearly done to screw Richie Rich and the Skins

This whole thing is so absurd. It's obvious to everyone that Shanahan is just playing games with the owner. I wish Snyder would just fire him for cause and call him on it.

It's likely we'll see that. The question is whether it happens after the season or during.

There is a part of me that is loving this because if anyone deserves to get screwed it is Dan Synder gives his history of coaches (Jim Zorn), media (suing grandmothers, screaming anti semitism at reporters) , fans (increased ticket prices, ####ty fan experience at game), etc. But this is so blatantly ####ty and toxic for the team and fan base that you can't help but slapping the crap out of Shanny and kick him out of the league

Boswell said it best: they both deserve each other but the fanbase doesn't deserve either of them

A little sidenote, my college roommate was a big falcons fan and we've had a little tradition of going to all the skins v falcons games since we graduated. So anyways, I'm going to the game in Atlanta this weekend. Obviously when we planned the trip this summer we had higher hopes for this game. :X

Wear your Strasburg jersey.
Not a bad idea if I had one.

Now, I've never brought a sign to the game before but am seriously considering it for this game. Fellow skins fans, any suggestions??

Wear burgundy and gold with The Shanahans Suck and sings "Nah, nah, nah. Nah, nah, nah...hey, hey, hey. GOODBYE!"

Dear Mike,

We are no longer interested in you.

Thanks,

The most compelling power struggle these days in Washington is not taking place be in offices on Capitol Hill or in the halls of the White House, but rather about 25 miles west in the offices at Redskins Park. For those of you who haven’t tuned in, the current fight between Coach Mike Shanahan and owner Dan Snyder has the intrigue of the best political drama, like “House of Cards.” Leaks designed to undermine your opponent and win the PR battle, kabuki-style press conferences not to answer questions but to deliver messages, lots of money and huge egos in a death match; the best show in town.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2013/12/11/the-insiders-the-most-compelling-power-struggle-in-washington-today/

Shanahan may care about his reputation, but he also presumably cares about the $7 million left on his $35 million contract. It is not just the monetary value he wants; it’s another way of keeping score and inflicting a little pain on the way out the door. To get a coach even of Shanahan’s diminished stature, Snyder had to lard his contract with guarantees that payment in full would be rendered in the event of a firing. These guarantees are rumored to include clauses not only giving Shanahan full control of “football operations,” but allowing him to quit and receive full contract value in the event Snyder meddles in those operations, as he has done repeatedly in the past. This is the pattern that Shanahan alleges is continuing as Snyder and Griffin have a bond that supersedes his with the quarterback.

Shanahan seems to be trying to provoke the owner into firing him. He not only let it be known he almost had to quit last year (adding the self-serving detail that he only came back because he didn’t want to run out on (auto-key) “RGIII’s gruesome knee injury,” an injury many blame him for) but taunted Snyder the next day by saying he might bench Griffin to make sure he’s fresh for next season and that he would only play the current 3-10 lineup, thus guaranteeing we will learn nothing about the potential of new starters for next year.

But give credit to the Redskins owner. Like Kevin Spacey’s character, he’s learning that revenge is best served cold. So far, he has stayed publicly placid, even generating something he’s never experienced: some good press. Perhaps he’s laying the groundwork to do what the best political dramatists aspire to: become a winning and sympathetic symbol of power even as he retracts the bloody knife.

Maybe right before the Falcons game, Snyder will get clearance for a flyover of the batcopter, rapel down to the 50 yard line with RGIII to save the day and fire Shanahan on the spot (in a technicality, he calls Commisioner Gordon on the bat phone beforehand for secret permission to activate the QB).
