"Once You Quit Hearing ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’ The Rest Is Sure To Follow" - Tommy Lee Jones in No Country For Old Men (1 Viewer)

Just saw two mothers at the mall, dressed up, walking along, cursing like sailors. This is going to fail faster than we think. Who upholds the decorum that upholds polite society, the veneer of which keeps us from each other’s throats?

You tell me. When the moms are lost, we’re all lost.

My wife nearly never curses, but recently she started substituting “oh fudge” for everyone’s favorite four-lettered epithet.

It makes me sad, tbh. I hope she doesn’t continue any further down the path of the mall moms.

What is the rest?

And why do I have to wait for it?
Oh, we're pretty much getting there.

Coarsening habits goes the coarsening mind!

Hellfire and brimstone need apply here, methinks.

You come off like a dream
Peaches and cream

Something something something fine
You're sixteen
You're beautiful
And you're mine.

You say "####" a lot
You are hot to trot
Divorce him then we'll make some time
You're thirty. You swear at the mall
It's divine

But why? At some point let’s move on. All of us.
I agree, to a degree. But is it not inextricable, this sense of propriety and honor from the original conception of their honorableness? When somebody sings the virtues of the South, they're singing about all that came along with it. It's actually wise to forgive, and not forget. That way we can assess the reasons for things to be the way they are.

What I'm also saying is that part of that polite culture had a grace that went along with it, but it was a grace founded on other people's backs, and not deserving of true grace, really.

I'm not one to constantly beat down the South, but my antennae go up when I hear someone sing its virtues.

I'm struggling with my reply words, which I took as a sign to munch another gummie.

I thought this thread was about when a young person calls you sir or ma'am.

In that spirit, it's particularly hurtful when a fine lady that is 30+ calls you sir.
I had to onboard two people today at work that are the age of my oldest kid - had to let out a “damn” for that one.

when the Green New Deal came along, i surprised & disappointed some timfolk when, as a leading forum lefty, i came down hard on its foolishness. we should always have been making progress on greenness but to pretend we can beat it when China/India/Etcia havent yet reached their consumer peak following the generally terrible precedent this country set as planet husbands is beyond pathetic

i feel the same way about moms & such. as a group, women are doing a laughably terrible job with their first generations of autonomy & hegemony. i am sure that humans will realize the partnership roles that the sexes will ultimately & optimally embrace (i was once so optimistic about us that i imagined to see it in my time, chucklechuckle), but to expect evolved conduct from veritable freedom rookies following what men were able to contribute to the morality mulchpile in 10000 yrs of stroking their scepters is folly

Nice turn of phrase here.

I was getting at de Tocqueville with this, though. His famous claim that women temper morality was actually exactly what I had in mind. According to him, American women of the early 19th C. had "freely chosen [their] lot." So I wonder what he would think of this newfound "autonomy" and whether this autonomy was actually what was truly desired after all.

Onto the mulch pile it all goes, anyway, I guess, for future generations of males to swear by their mothers as they have always done.

de Tocqueville would have expected a tall African to begin playing above-the-rim hoops the first time he saw a basketball...

men and women are ultimately complimentary but have yet to return compliments to each other as equals. and i dont expect women to come anywhere near the table until theyve ruined several generations for grins.

I agree. But will that be too late? Any collapse is only going to wind up with reactionary roles for physical survival, if you ask me. We might not have time for grins. Really, women are the last pillar. That's the point of the thread. We know the men were corrupt, unsubstantial, crude, and oversaw horrors upon horrors. Can we afford the women to be also in the West, or will their Western liberation prove to be the greatest paradox of all?

Just sayin'.

(Like that just sayin' bit? I've been saving that one for you.)

My wife, my daughters mother, curses like a sailor.  It’s one of the things I love about her.

We both grew up in houses where our parents cursed openly.  But there’s one important distinction.  As with both our parents it’s never in a disrespectful matter at or towards someone.  Other then that they are just words. I’ve never disrespected my wife with my words toward her, nor she to me.

And I get that newfound autonomy is filled with struggles about how to best realize that autonomy, and that's your main point -- my point was despite the mea culpa men need to issue, we ain't got time for seventy-five percent of the populace to decide their own moral fates for themselves. That's too much freedom, if you ask me.

*We need some good, old-fashioned rules that we all follow.*

Like The Golden Rule, to start with. That'd be nice. Cursing can come later.

my optimism has not dimmed, just my timeline.

we are going to have to crash now. men had the conn because their competencies were indeed optimal to getting us where they got us. but we held to our competencies until many of them became redundancies and became as reactive as most new redundancies do. so women still have to employ reacharounds to access the controls but men remain perfectly comfortable criticizing their steering. and women insist that their steering is just fine like this, when it cant be. so we are going to have to crash now and those who reach shore will be hoped to have learned sumn.

A. Once again I knew this was your thread by the length of its title.

B. Seems odd for you to be so concerned about decorum when you fling as much e-poo on these forums as anyone.

You were late to the thread. I figured I'd clarify where it was coming from so it could have a background in people's minds

B. Seems odd for you to be so concerned about decorum when you fling as much e-poo on these forums as anyone.
Mon dieu! There's no way I fling as much poo as your good buddies Deamon and DJax.

And not only that, it's not really applicable what I do here (how little you think of me!)  to what one generally thinks of when they think of true decorum. Entire books have been written about the "send" or "reply" button and how humans behave electronically vs. meat space,. Perhaps those would edify you.

And this thread applies to mothers, so women, so it's not really analogous.

Sheesh. Somebody woke up this morning. It seems you had a lingering feeling, and stretched it to meet to the thread.

[Y]ou fling as much e-poo on these forums as anyone, sir.

That's better. I like the formality of it. Could even be a signature!

(If we still had them.)

How about listing it as your interest?  Instead of Fact Chess it could be E-Poo Flinging.
