Only Three Active Players With 10+ Years Of Service (1 Viewer)

I was flipping through the mlb.com radio links and alighted on WGN and the Chicago/LA Dodger game.

The play-by-play guy mentioned that there are three currently active players with ten or more years of service time who have never been on the DL.

I whiffed on all three.

Hints:

One is a pitcher who has a no-hitter and 40+ save year on his resume.

One attended an Ivy League school.

One had a couple of famous nicknames because of his hair and beard, but then had to shave and trim when he joined his new team.

You sure about this one? Lidge and Wagner were part of a no-hitter and Wagner might be the guy...but he didn't throw a no-hiiter. The Ivy League guy has to be Brad Ausmus (Dartmouth) and considering he's a catcher, that's really amazing. Not sure about the third.

Ausmus is correct. The pitcher is not Lidge or Wagner. The reason the subject was brought up is because the pitcher is on the roster of one of the teams in today's Cub/Dodger game.

Derrick Lowe.

I knew Ausmus has been around for awhile, but I was surprised to see that he turns 39 in August and has been in the league since 1993. And with the exception of his first year, and now this year, he's been a starter. He was also a basestealing catcher (double digits in five seasons). When you add up all the physical demands of that position, plus his running, it really is quite impressive that he has never suffered an injury severe enough to land on the DL.

Doctor Detroit:

I am looking through Ausmus' stats at baseball-reference.com

Is this accurate? He was involved in a trade between Detroit and Houston on three separate occasions?

December 10, 1996: Traded by the Detroit Tigers with Jose Lima, Trever Miller, C.J. Nitkowski, and Daryle Ward to the Houston Astros for Doug Brocail, Brian Hunter, Todd Jones, Orlando Miller, and cash.

January 14, 1999: Traded by the Houston Astros with C.J. Nitkowski to the Detroit Tigers for Paul Bako, Dean Crow, Brian Powell, Carlos Villalobos (minors), and Mark Persails (minors).

December 11, 2000: Traded by the Detroit Tigers with Doug Brocail and Nelson Cruz to the Houston Astros for Roger Cedeno, Chris Holt, and Mitch Meluskey.
That's strange.

Yeah and I wasn't too happy about trading him back to the Astros a second time since he had his two best offensive seasons in Detroit. He's not spectacular but he's always handled his pitchers well and he is a good defensive catcher that is decent offensively if he takes walks.
