The current overall party...and party here in TN...has pushed to the Trump side. One that does not align with much of anything I have ever been.
In your scenario...Romney. He is not a Trump Republican. And I have been disappointed in Biden and was never a fan of Harris. Id prefer a Kasich, Sasse type...but would be perfectly fine with Romney in such a situation.

I don't know why it is so difficult for some people to accept there are many moderates/independents who will never support Trump or his allies. Sorry but not all of us are extreme socialist liberals.

If the argument is that Trump can't win, then I suggest that Republican legislatures in battleground states are gearing up to disqualify vote counts from their blue districts to make sure he does. I don't know if they'd do the same on behalf of another candidate.
