Opponents trying to quiet Qwest Field? (1 Viewer)

...I am still hoping for Flag Day 2!

The game is still days away, and already there has been a little ruckus over just how raucous Qwest Field could be Sunday.

Both the Seahawks and New York Giants have been notified the NFL will be monitoring this weekend's game, according to a league source, and the notice mentioned allegations that artificial noise has been piped into Seattle's stadium.

The notice did not specify who alleged the noise of the crowd at Qwest Field had been enhanced, but both teams were informed that the league's observers will be watching for violations of the NFL's crowd-noise policy.

We just wanted to let you know that we'd be watching for this specific behavior, so if we catch you doing it, you'll be in trouble. Surprise inspections? No no no, we don't do those sorts of things.

I remember when Elway would complain about crowd noise in Arrowhead. The Refs actually stopped play (and the play clock that had been running down), and threatened to flag the Chiefs if they couldn't quiet the stadium down. Ridiculous.

"Hello Acme Supply Co, can I help you?"

"Yes I'd like to order 72,000 hand-held airhorns please"

"Sure, may I have your name please?"

"Put it under Paul Allen"

:)

Is this true? That is ridiculous

Elway's #1 talent was whining. He also did that in Indianapolis (the team he whined out of playing for).

Yup. It actually happened a few times, and it wasn't just Elway. But with Elway, he'd complain, we'd get penalized, and the crowd got louder. Rinse and repeat until the refs simply told Elway to run a play. This was the early 90's. I don't think any team has been penalized for crowd noise since the late 90's.

that was my thought...then I read it a bit closer:

Any chance that it was the Seahawks that make the alegation, just to pump up the fans, and make it LOUDER?!?!?!Most likely not, but what a conspiricy theory.

Umm...that was an official league rule, IIRC. If it wa so noisy that the lineman couldn't hear the cadence, the QB had the right to complain to the official and the fans had to simmer down or take a penalty. Fortunately, the NFL tossed that aweful rule out, but don't knock Elway for playing within the confines of the rule. He couldn't help if if he brought out the worst in KC and/or Cleveland fans.

Last year the Steelers and the Jags cried about the RCA dome being to loud.... same claims where made about artificial noise piped in...... The fans there just get crazy when the opposing offense comes up to the line........ and the more they complain... the louder it gets.

Eli played in Tiger Stadium. I guarantee Qwest field is not louder than LSU.
Yes, Tiger Stadium is loud...one of the 5 loudest stadiums in college football:The SwampNeyland StadiumTiger StadiumJordan-Hare StadiumThe HorseshoeHowever, the quarterback is not affected directly with crowd noise, but rather the offensive lineman on normal plays and lineman, receivers and running backs on attempted audibles.

What an insane accusation, haven't the Giants seen how the stadium is BUILT? the section behind the end-zone is like a cliff, the entire thing is designed to funnel noise right onto the field.

They did flag the seahawks when elway complained in the kingdome.

In a radio interview today. Holmgren did "suggest" that the fans might have something to say about these allegations in seattle on sunday. :lmao: I'm thinking of ebuying some tickets so I can go scream my ### off. Starting to wish I wouldn't have given up my season tickets last year. :wall:

Are you a Seattle fellow?
Born and bred. Graduated from UW. I had season tickets for 15 friggin years and finally gave up on my season tix partner. he was blowing me off 5 games a year and usually not calling me till saturday. I got frustrated and walked away from some really sweet tix. I think I am the single reason the seahawks finally made it to the superbowl. :)

It wasn't just Elway. I was at a Monday night game in the Kingdome back in the 90's and recall Boomer Esiason was able to suck a couple of flags out of the officials because of the crowd noise. Of course that just whipped the crowd into a LOUDER frenzy. Thankfully that ill-conceived rule was striken from the books. Later that night, the Bengals took out their frustration by (allegedly) raping a Seattle woman.

Nah, Qwest is louder, its organized. Strahan said today that he has never played in a stadium anywhere close to as loud as Qwest field. And I guarantee you, if Tiger stadium was louder, it won't be after sunday.

:hifive:Also born and bred, graduated from UWWish you would have called me before you gave the tix up. :(Whereabouts in the area do you live? I'm between Woodinville and Redmond
I live out in the Lake Stevens area. Commute through your neck of the woods 3 times a week though.

Now i have UW season tickets, I figured now's probably the best time in the history of the Huskies to get good seats. LOL

Thats funny because we didn't have any problems with the noise in the Playoffs when we went back after the Complaint. I'd think it would be louder during the playoffs.

Can't be leaving Kyle Field off any list of the loudest joints in CFB.

The Chiefs’ 65-15 regular-season home record during the 1990s was tops in the league and the Chiefs became the first team penalized for excessive crowd noise after the NFL adopted the rule in 1989.

The New York Times ran a front-page story Sunday on the issue because the Giants were returning to Seattle’s Qwest Field, where crowd noise in the partially roofed stadium contributed to 11 false-start penalties for the Giants in their 24-21 loss in overtime last year. Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren awarded the game ball to the fans.
:D Anyway, there might have been other reasons that the noise level was being monitored. Apparently the new commish doesn't like noisy stadiums.

Still, the issue’s not about to go away. Commissioner Roger Goodell is discussing the use of microphones in quarterbacks’ helmets and speakers for his teammates so they can hear snap counts, play calls and audibles. Quarterbacks currently have devices that allow them to hear their coaches but only until 15 seconds remain on the play clock.

Goodell recently suggested that noise should encourage the defense, but not disrupt the offense or prevent it from executing its game plan.

“To some extent right now,” he said, “I think we are hindering that a little bit, because they come into an opposing stadium and they are not able to put the full offense in, they are not able to run plays in, they are not able to change the plays at the line of scrimmage.”

Dear Commish: Welcome to the NFL. This is known as "home field advantage." Please leave it the #### alone and go loosen up the rules about endzone celebrations or something.

i'm pretty sure goodell will get run out of the commisioners position very quickly if he tries to put mic's in the o'linemans helmets by the fans......that is just a bs ##### move if he does that to try to minimize the fan affect of home field advantage, that's the whole point of having it. We don't all have the colts offense that plays a silent count and calls the play off what the defense is lined up as.....let's just give peyton a bigger advantage then he already has mentally.....good idea

ummm....this rule is still on the books, but the qb knows better than to try and use it now. it always backfires.

:shrug:I don't see a problem with helmet microphones/speakers. It let's the fans be as loud as they want.

Artificial noise should be outlawed. If the home team fans can't make enough noise on their own, tough s..t.

Did they really? That's awesome, if true.I was also going to add that I remember in the early 90's the Bills being flagged for it a time or two, for those that were astonished by the original Elway reference.
