Oregon - Pumping Gas (1 Viewer)

Fo reals? How the hell did I not know that? You sure? It's hard to believe that I've never gotten gas (err - car fuel) in Huntington because this seems totally foreign to me.

   I'm in Centerport. (Town of Huntington)

When I've been in NJ, they never have enough attendants so some of the pumps are closed.  Ridiculously stupid.
Are you sure the lack of attendants is why the pumps were closed?

At some larger stations that have multiple tanks underground, they'll close off pumps if they run out of certain types of gas.

I don't know the reason.  Regardless, for a gas station on the turnpike to have cars backed up with pumps not open is stupid.

New Jersey is the same way. I have to drive thru it to get to my folks in Boston; in the past the gas prices have been cheap, and it was kinda nice to have someone else get out and do the 'work,' but now it has evolved into a process where they pump gas and maybe do your windshield and sometimes ask for a tip. The prices for gas have gone up, but I don't think that is related to having full service gas.

Now this is driving thru on turnpikes and stopping at rest areas, so I don't know about regular gas stations, although the full service is a state law.
It's actually illegal in NJ for gas attendants to request or even accept tips.

That is true, starting in 2001. This took place in 1993. Probably took a gas station attendant getting their ### kicked to get the law changed.

Crazy, why have 8-12 pumps if only 1 can be in use at any time?
Most of the ones around me have something like 1 attendant per 4 pumps.

What's hilarious is that both NJ and Oregon claim that the primary reason that they require attendants to pump gas is for safety purposes. And yet every single attendant I have ever seen in NJ (lived here 17 years now), puts the nozzle in, squeezes the handle, flips the catch to keep the gas flowing, and walks away.

There's no question in my mind that walking away from the hose while it's dispensing is much much much more dangerous than letting a car's owner stand there and pump their own gas.

My Elantra has a sharp angle in the gas line from the nozzle entry to the tank that trips the automatic sensors in a lot of newer gas pumps. So the attendant will put the nozzle in, walk away, and it will trip and stop dispensing within about 20 seconds. They'll wander back over a few minutes later and notice what happened, restart it, and walk away again. Again it will stop and I'll sit there yet another few minutes until they wander back over.

At this point, and intelligent person would realize what is going on, understand that the quickest and easiest thing to do at this point is to stand there and pump it, and would stand there and pump it. But 9 times out of 10, the attendant will spend the next 3 minutes looking around for a cap or something else small to wedge under the handle of the dispenser to prevent the safety from turning off, which they will proceed to wedge in, and then walk away, not only taking just as much time finding a cap as it would just to pump the gas, but creating a dangerous situation in the process. It's totally crazy.

Depends on the station.

Some have only 2-4

Most have 8.

It's never only 1 pump.  It would be more like I island that is 4 pumps

They guy can usually handle 3 to 4 cars at once.   Insert card, start pumping...go to the next car and do the same.  There can be 3 cars at once getting filled up while he moves around all the pumps.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
