Dear Faithful Ourlads' Subscribers,
My name is Dan Shonka. I am a sixteen-year NFL scouting veteran with the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and National Football Scouting. In 2003, I was President of Pro Scout Confidential, a player personnel consulting firm that worked with teams and agents. (See my website at proscoutconfidential). In addition, my wife Peggy and I published College Football Preview, a small college football magazine, for 10 years from 1988-1997.
During my last four years at National I was rated as one of the top scouts by general managers and college directors before joining the Eagles after the 1994 draft. It has been my good fortune to work as an area, regional, and national scout. In addition, I was a college assistant coach, head coach, and recruiter for 13 years prior to scouting.
Intent film study is a blue collar job. I love player personnel work. I hope my passion and enthusiasm for my job will be clearly evident in my work for you as subscribers of Ourlads' Scouting Services. Ourlads' has been America's top independent professional football scouting organization for over 23 years. Some companies get more publicity or self promotion. Some say they are "the book the scouts buy." But as a subscriber to Ourlads', you know America's biggest secret. Ourlads' evaluations are based on solid tape and live observation. I can confidently say that Ourlads' is the best because every ball club I worked for had several copies and I was amazed how Tom, Phil, and the Laddies hit on the players. In addition, I had talks with several top agents in 2003 who used Ourlads' as a scouting bible. Numerous agents graded the various scouting reports out there and they told me that Ourlads' consistently was their top guide for accurate player information. As an NFL scout sitting in a draft room waiting for the next selection, I observed owners, general managers, coaches, and scouts studying and highlighting the newsletters and draft guide. Ourlads' Draft Guide was also popular during the week prior to the draft for information on the numerous mock drafts that were used to simulate the weekend draft.
I want to thank Tom, Catherine, Phil, Mary, the Laddies, et al, for affording me this opportunity to direct Ourlads' Guides. Several of my colleagues have told me that if they had it to do all over again, they would watch their kids play high school sports. One long time scout had five sons, all quarterbacks, and didn't get to see any of them play a high school game. My 16 year old son, Teddy, plays football, basketball, soccer, and baseball. My daughter, Sarah is a sophomore at the University of Northern Iowa where she works part-time in the football office. The Ourlads' family is giving me the cake and letting me eat it too! When I was with National Football Scouting I never had to have an emblem on my shirt or a team logo on my hat to declare I was a football scout. I love to watch the players play. Please visit my former website at www.proscoutconfidential.com. You can look at reports on Kurt Warner and Priest Holmes, my spring report on Robert Gallery, and the free agent players that I've signed. You can add Aaron Elling, the Vikings' kicker to that list. Also, for additional reading , my opinions prior to the 2004 draft and writeups on every player in every All-Star game, go to proscoutconfidential. You will receive this for no charge.
We will continue with the popular newsletters that contain features such as the draft winds, Laddie Awards, and independent player evaluations. Some new features will include the all time free agent teams, scouting 101, among others. Lastly, there is a popular saying that is a good fit for Tom and the Lads-the opportunity for destination lies in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.

Thomas E. Hepler announced today that he is retiring as President and General Manager of OURLADS' Scouting Services. The company is being taken over by Dan Shonka and the headquarters will be moved from New Jersey to Iowa.
"This second career of mine has been an exciting and enjoyable period of my life and has encompassed almost a quarter of a century," said Hepler. "From a few lads sitting around our computer early on, rolling film (and later video), stalking sidelines, rating players, analyzing the teams, and projecting the draft, the company has been transformed into THE premier independent football scouting organization. I feel Dan Shonka's experience as a player, scout, coach, and businessman portends good things for our lads and our clients."
He later added, "It is conventional to say that I wanted to spend more time with my family, and all of those vague read-between-the-lines statements. When one has passed his seventh decade, those comments are absurd. I will be involved, for some period, as a consultant and expect to spend time doing radio and TV appearances and doing what I enjoy most, evaluating players and reporting my findings. It is that latter aspect that I miss most as, more and more, administrative duties have impacted on my time as we continued to grow."
"When confronted with the thought of letting go, I wasn't sure I wanted to. Two words uttered by one of my most trusted friends, 'It's time' made it all clear - and easy," Hepler further stated in an interview that will eventually appear on the website and in a subsequent newsletter.
