Overall defensive efficiency... (1 Viewer)

Last year, there were only 12 teams that gave up less points than yards per game. They were (in order of "efficiency"):

BAL - 201pts/264yds - .76

NE - 237pts/294yds - .81

CHI - 255pts/294yds - .87

NYJ - 295pts/332yds - .89

CIN - 331pts/355yds - .93

DEN - 305pts/326yds - .94

BUF - 311pts/330yds - .94

JAX - 274pts/284yds - .96

KC - 315pts/329yds - .96

MIA - 283pts/289yds - .98

ATL - 328pts/333yds - .98

PHI - 328pts/328.1yds - .9997

I guess these are the defenses that "bend, but don't break". Yup, some useless stat crunching during the offseason.

Not sure I really understand what these numbers mean...

Are you essentially trying to infer redzone efficiency (giving up lots of yards but not points)?

yards per point (and, by extension, points per yard) is one of the most meaningless stats ever. I mean, it actually REWARDS teams for giving up yards. If a team gave up 200 points and 200 yards, the statistic would call their defense worse (or less efficient) than another defense that gave up 200 points and 400 yards. Personally, I'd call a defense that gave up 200 points and 50 yards per game far more efficient than a defense that gave up 200 points and 500 yards per game, despite finishing ten times worse in the "yards per point" metric.

I have no idea why I crunched the stats, other than midseason boredom. I thought a trend may appear, but nothing really did jump out at me. Here is how that list finished, in terms of giving up NFL points vs scoring FF points (at least in my league scoring):BAL - 1st, 1stNE - 2nd, 5thCHI - 3rd, 2ndNYJ - 6th, 27thCIN - 17th, 19thDEN - 8th, 16thBUF - 10th, 17thJAX - 4th, 10thKC - 11th, 21stMIA - 5th, 7thATL - 15th, 22ndPHI - 16th, 6thTo me, it was pretty much a given that the list would be mostly the teams that gave up the least points. About the only things I can see are that BAL and CHI are the real deal, and NE, MIA, and JAX shouldn't stray too far from the top again in 2007.
