P.Thomas ? (1 Viewer)

I haven't seen any injury updates on Thomas today or yesterday, so we will see what practice tells us tomorrow......BUT really facing a hapless Cards defense this weekend, they should be giving Pierre another week of rest and get some more work for Ivory and Betts

Per Roto

"Pierre Thomas was held out of Saints practice Wednesday with injuries to his ankle and knee.

The knee is a new ailment, revealed by Sean Payton Wednesday. Payton said the "knee is better" and that the "swelling has gone down," but Thomas still isn't healthy enough to to run at full speed. It's a growing concern. The Saints match up with Arizona's NFC-worst run defense on Sunday, and "P.T." may not be available. We could see another Chris Ivory-Ladell Betts rotation in Week 5."

Did he hurt himself further getting up off the couch during his week off?

(RotoWire) Thomas (ankle/knee) did not practice Wednesday, Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Analysis: Thomas dealt with an ankle injury last week, but Duncan's report Wednesday notes that coach Sean Payton said that the swelling in Thomas' knee has gone down, which is either a typo or represents a new injury in play for the running back.

The play where we was hurt sure looked like a knee. I think everybody was shocked when it was announced as an ankle. My bet is, he hurt both his ankle and knee on the same play, but the knee wasn't so bad until a few days later when it started swelling up. Just a guess though.

wish the saints would be forthright about wtf is going on here. this guy is weighing heavy on rosters at this time of year.

Pierre Thomas-RB- Saints Oct. 6 - 5:07 pm et

Updating a previous item, Pierre Thomas is still dealing with an ankle sprain, not a knee injury as reported earlier.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune's Jeff Duncan made it sound like Thomas had a new injury to his knee in a Wednesday afternoon tweet, but only his ankle is hurting. The extent of Thomas' injury remains unknown. We'll have a good idea that it's a high ankle sprain if he sits out Week 5 at Arizona.

Who is the better pickup for this week (bye week and injury issues here)? Betts or Ivory?
Based purely on Drew Brees' post-game comments on Betts: "He was awesome," Brees said - Sean Payton said "There's a calm, veteran presence to him. He's confident. He inspired us to some degree, especially with that play on the sideline." Then factor in that Ivory fumbled in his second-straight game, and I would say Ladell Betts is the guy to target. They won't stop giving the ball to Ivory though. Pure RBBC, but the Cardinals have a very promiscuous run d, so worth a look.

From RotoInfo:

Coach Sean Payton said the swelling in RB Pierre Thomas' knee has gone down. "If I were to elaborate, I'd say I feel real good about his progress," Payton said. "He's a lot further along now than he was a week ago."

That's great and all but Ivory is still the stronger faster runner. He needs to correct the fumbles, but he out produced Betts and the fumble didn't seem to shake Payton's faith in him either. He ran hard and was decisive, I'd say he's worth a start if you're low on options.

i would ####in hope so

even if PT plays he will see a reduced role until his ailments settle down (If they settle down) If you are looking for a backup in the RBBC the better play is Ivory. Hopefully he learns to secure the damn ball though.

good info. i would slightly prefer betts in ppr, but think ivory is viable. would much prefer ivory in standard, and be hesitant to go with betts.

Betts seems to be much more involved in the passing game, though.

Betts is obviously the play, Pierre should be 100% by next week, so if its a one week fill in, its betts... If Pierre was going to be out for several more weeks it might be ivory.

Think I'll be sitting PT this week. Betts is the better PPR play, Ivory a slightly better non-PPR play if you have options on both.

(FFChamps) New Orleans Saints Head Coach, Sean Payton, says he is optimistic RB Pierre Thomas (ankle) will play this week against the Cardinals. Thomas missed the team's Week 4 game due to his sprained ankle.

Analysis: If Thomas cant go, Chris Ivory and Ladell Betts with split time in the Saints backfield. The Saints RBs have a good match-up this week against the Cardinals Defense that let up 180 yards on the ground last week.

Didn't Payton say that yesterday - i.e., before today's practice?

I don't know. I was just posting the link from MFL which is dated today.

I think its safe to assume he won't play, same situation as last week, playing a bad team and Pierre is still beat up. Payton has shown in the past he understands its a long season, he doesn't hesitate to hold guys out if its an injury that could worsen. Just pure speculations but I would expect Pierre to be back in a limited capacity against the browns and then back to a full go when the team travels to Tampa Bay

Ivory was seen limping around the locker room and favoring his left knee as recently as Wednesday. He's not 100%. He's fumbled 2 games in a row, and his coach has warned him that more of that will land him on another team. No way I start Ivory over Betts if Thomas is out. If I'm wrong I can live with it, because the vibe right now is heavily in Betts' favor.

I disagree, Payton's handled backs who fumble before, most notably Tiki Barber, Ivory's position is safe. Safer than Betts' own position. As far the injury, he wasnt 100% last week either and did well aside from his fumble, which was one step away from a big play by the way.

from Rotoworld:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sports Center Friday morning that it's "very unlikely" Pierre Thomas (ankle) will play this week at Arizona.

Beat reporter Jeff Duncan tweeted similar sentiments Friday morning. So much for Coach Sean Payton's mid-week optimism. Schefter explained that Thomas' injury had the look of a 1-2 week absence when it occurred, "and that's going to be the case." Barring a surprising return to practice on Friday, Thomas will give way to Ladell Betts and Chris Ivory again this week. Betts is better used in standard scoring and PPR leagues while Ivory is the choice in TD-heavy formats. Oct. 8 - 10:19 am et

PT is OUT this week

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81b2...le=HP_headlines

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton told reporters Friday that starting running back Pierre Thomas has been ruled out of this weekend's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Thomas missed his third day of practice Friday after sitting out last weekend's 16-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers with a left ankle injury.

"It's not a high ankle sprain," Payton said Friday. "It's more of a typical sprain, lower, but he's looking a lot better. He's going to have a good shot to play next week."

Payton also confirmed that defensive end Will Smith (groin) and safety Roman Harper (hamstring) are questionable to play Sunday.

Tracy Porter is out, and expected to miss three to four weeks after arthroscopic surgery to repair the lateral meniscus in his left knee, leaving the team without its starting cornerback.

Tight end Jeremy Shockey (knee) is probable.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
