Longtime CBS Sports college basketball analyst Billy Packer will not return to the broadcast booth next season, according to a report in the Miami Herald.

Packer's streak of announcing 34 consecutive Final Fours will end as CBS has decided not to bring the veteran back after 27 years at the network. Packer got his start at NBC, at different times working with Curt Gowdy, **** Enberg and Al Maguire.

The Herald said an official announcement of the move is expected Monday, but CBS representative Leslie Anne Wade confirmed the story Sunday night.

Studio analyst Clark Kellogg will take Packer's spot next to Jim Nantz on the lead NCAA tournament broadcasting team next season, according to the Herald.

I am not a huge fan of Packer but he did do a good job as an analyst. Clark Kellogg is horrible. I would think they could have found somebody better than him.

The games are what matter to me. That being said..Packer talked too much.

Awww, I'll miss his constant "who are the #1 seeds" & "who's in, who's out" talk during the big ten championship game. Maybe Clark will let the game go on......probably not.

I can't think of another announcer that evokes as much hatred as Billy Packer.

Bill Walton has actually grown on me. I think the guy is a total cook, but it's at least refreshing to hear him go after the players he doesn't like. I think Jeff Van Gundy is currently the worst NBA colorman...

Wow, I like all of them except for Walton. What's wrong with McCarver and Morgan?
Mainly they are all extremely arrogant. They make everything about them and not about the game. And they don't even seem like they like the game. THey have disdain for the people playing (except Gary Sheffield) and the people listening. Morgan clearly despises his job. So stop doing it! He's unlistenable. As is McCarver. And Packer. And Bill Walton.

if by arrogant you mean knowledgeable, I agree. i think Morgan and McCarver both do an excellent job of explaining the game to the average fan. I don't think Morgan hates his job at all. He seems just the opposite to me.

Well we could go back and forth for hours about how Joe -- while he certainly knows more about hitting a baseball than 99% of the world -- knows very little about baseball analysis. And how he does almost zero research (you know, being the lead analyst for ESPN). But I'm sure I'd be boring, so I'd recommend checking out Fire Joe Morgan

Bill Raftery. A ton of the old play by play guys (Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell, Jack Buck, etc)

SuperGus Johnson (obviously)

There's plenty more. I think Herbstreit is very good. Of course Keith Jackson was awesome (as play by play). Lots of them.

I don't care for Raftery but like all the others you mention.

Packer used to be my favorite analyst until he slipped in recent years. He wasn't scared to say what was on his mind, even if he was in a minority. And he knew his basketball.

Joe Theismann seemed to get a lot of hate. So did Dierdorf back when he was doing MNF.Also, I'm not sure how we could leave Cosell out of such a discussion.

I love Walton, even though I can see how people would hate him.

I love Morgan, and I don't see how people could hate him. I just don't get it.

Great move by CBS. Now if they can just figure out a way to have Gus Johnson do every game of the tournament...

I don't get all the hate, although he hasn't been as good the last 3-4 years. Having said that, I'm a Tarheel fan and I've heard people accuse him of being a closet ACC/UNC fan, so maybe that's why I don't have a problem with him.

The general game, yes, but both are terrible in specific situations. I can't how many times each of these yahoos have said things like "In this situation, xyz is the correct play" or "if I were xyz I would have done abc instead"....MOST of the time, being completely wrong. Morgan seems to still be playing the game as it was played in his day, which I understand, but it doesn't make it right. McCarver seems completely lost most of the time.

 If he is a closet ACC fan (he's faded in and out on UNC) then Vitale is a closet Duke fan ;)

I guess I have to disagree. I think they both are very good. I prefer Morgan over McCarver but I like both. I think they are right most of the time. To each his own I guess.

The problem with them dumping Packer is that they chose Kellogg to replace him. Kellogg is beyond awful, IMO.

You mean Dukie V?

Couldn't disagree more. He's a very hard worker, understands the nuances of the game, and communicates well without bias.

As long as the ACC is getting felated routinely on national TV. God you'd think nobody plays basketball if they aren't on the east coast. We played drinking games with how much those two would jock the ACC.

No bias? I guess you haven't heard him when "THE" Ohio St. U. is involved. BTW, if he works so hard, why is he so bad?

Packer a closet UNC fan? :lmao: Packer is a Wake alum who despises UNC, but is smart and educated enough not to let that bias show - most of the time.

I know he went to Wake, but I've never heard him say anything bad about UNC. Maybe I just missed it. :lmao:

I guess you missed the 80s and early 90s....that's cool. Reality is, he was to UNC during that time what Vitale's been to Duke recently.

I remember watching golf and the announcer, I think it was Tirico, said "As you can see, the flag is blowing directly downwind today" All at once my response was :banned: :X and :lmao:

McCarver and Morgan are similarly annoying.

McCarver talks. so. slowly. it's. like. he's. ex-plain-ing. it. to. a. 4th. gra-der.

Morgan just has a tone like he's got the answers to everything.

Yeah, afraid I am... :lmao:
Ok, what other direction would a flag blow other than downwind?
When he says that he means the flag is blowing towards the back of the green. The players have the wind behind their back. It's basically a golf term.
