For those that cannot access it, the link reads:

Packers quarterback Brett Favre has announced that he will retire.text**Packers GM Ted Thompson this afternoon held a brief press conference to address questions from the media regarding today's announcement.Stay tuned to Packers.com for a complete transcript, audio and video of today's press conference.

You would think that giventhe magnitude of the news that it would be posted on the main packers.com site. But it's not. And there is no link on the main site to the BREAKING NEWS link.

Seems odd to me . . .

If he held a press conference, it would have been all over the news already... I agree. This is bunk.

:bag: Also on the link:
Welcome to the Packers.com Breaking News page.Due to the magnitude of today's Packers news, Packers.com is offering this Breaking News page in lieu of our normal Packers.com site. With minimal graphics and no ancillary content, page loads should be quick, even in this period of high demand. All news stories from today will be listed right here on the Breaking News page. If you are seeking archived Packers.com material, you may still access the regular Packers.com site here.

AKA, we know this is a lame hoax, but we're trying our best to get as many :fish: to bite as possible.

I'm not saying this is true, but is it really that hard to believe that Brett Favre might retire? Seriously?

Not at all, in fact I think he will. Not like this, though. It would be handled differently, with news breaking via press conference or memo sent out to the media first, not a "heads up Favre will retire today" lame add on site.

Actually, I've been searching for references to packers.com/breaking_news/ and found the exact same story was listed 02/02/2007. Either it has been there this entire time, or was reposted. Either way, this is not a valid source of info.

Maybe it's like one of those tribute pages that they have ready for the day. Like CNN has ready to go for all the old celebrities.

I called the Packers front office and reported it, so the fact that is password protected is not really a surprise.

I also called the webmaster/designer for the Packers site, who told me that the Packers have pages in development that are not active pages (which this appears to be one of them) in which they prepare pages/articles based on news as it happens and then post the appropriate link for the proper result.

So they likely have a page prepped and ready to go for all outcomes (Brett comes back, Brett retires, Brett wants more time, etc.).

I doubt this is a real news story. I have not seen it anywhere else . . . and I check the NFL wire pretty regularly.

I still have the page open before it was shut down. It definitely looks like a case of the Packers using test pages to have breaking news ready to go immediately rather than a hacker. I'm guessing they have a "Brett Retires" and "Brett's Coming Back" version and they simply run with the proper story immediately after an announcement is made. Kinda like how both Super Bowl teams have hats and shirts printed up that declare they're NFL Champs. I'm guessing someone simply got their hands on a Packers test page url..nothing more.

Thanks for the info.... :lmao:

Just moved Favre for 4.01 pick in the upcoming rookie draft....boy is my opponent going to be hot when this news hits the wire!

The Packers have stated they would like an answer from Favre before the start of free agency on Feb. 29th. Either way Favre decides there may be an announcement today or tomorrow.

........or Favre has already given the team his intentions and there will be official word when they're ready.

The packers are in decent shape regardless of what he decides. Aaron Rodgers is more than ready to step in and lead the team. IMHO.

Per Rotoworld:

Brett Favre-QB- Packers Feb. 28 - 12:51 pm et Profootballtalk.com had a link to a page on the Packers' website that apparently was to announce Brett Favre's retirement, but has since been taken down. The announcement wasn't linked to on the front page of the Packers' site, and now requires an administrator login. The page did mention that it was special template to handle increased traffic, so may have been just a dummy page in case Favre retires. We'll update if we find out more.Source: profootballtalk.com

In more recent articles...both Thompson and McCarthy deny giving Favre any ultimatum or time table for his decision.

Shot of what the page looked like before it was taken down.

I saw the orginal page before it was taken down, and IMO the concept that it is a development page makes sense as they phsycially added the word "text" under the picture to note that that's where the text of the article would go (if they had an article to go there). You can still see that in the picture.I still think this is a case of GB being prepped to go no matter what Favre says . . . and they will have other pages ready to go with other headlines based on what he could say.

Brett Favre-QB-Packers Feb. 28 - 2:10 pm et

Brett Favre's agent Bus Cook and the Packers P.R. director Jeff Blumb have confirmed that Favre has made no decision about possibly retiring this year.

It was an embarrasing technical error from Packers.com, who accidentally posted a live "dummy" page. This is fairly standard practice, and the Packers used a similar page last year to announce Favre's return. Favre continues to take longer than expected this year to make his choice, but no decision is imminent.

No retirement announcement coming, Cook says

By Tom Silverstein

Thursday, Feb 28 2008, 01:04 PM

A link on the Green Bay Packers' website that led to a page that declared quarterback Brett Favre was retiring appeared briefly, but according to Favre's agent, James (Bus) Cook, Favre hasn't made a decision on his future yet.

Cook said he was aware there was something posted briefly on the Packers' website about Favre retiring, but he said it was not accurate. He said he hasn't talked to Favre about his plans for next season and figures the quarterback will call him when he has made his decision.

The page was taken down quickly and no longer appears on the website.

Cook said he didn't think there was anything to the brief posting.

The internet site profootballtalk.com first reported that there was a page on Packers.com with a headline that said, "Favre to retire." There was nothing on the front page of the website about it and it had to be accessed by clickng a "breaking news" link through another story.

There is no story on the page, just a picture of Favre and and a caption that reads "Packers quarterback Brett Favre announces he will retire." Underneath that there is the word "text", presumably where a story would go about the Favre retirement.

Packers public relations director Jeff Blumb just sent me an email saying that the posting was a mistake and that no Favre decision is imminent. He said the page exists because the website has to prepare ahead of time for Favre's eventual retirement.

Here is Blumb's explanation:

"As most media outlets have done, Packers.com each year prepares its web site to handle the traffic in case Brett Favre does retire. The URL for this "Breaking News" page, which also was used last year when Brett announced his return, was accidently posted as live, when it should have been disabled until needed, if needed at all."

A reader sent us a copy of the page that appeared before the Packers pulled it from their website and based on the rudimentary design it would lead one to believe it's not something they plan on posting anytime soon. One can be skeptical given the secrecy in which Favre's retirement plans will be handled, but based on Cook's statement and Blumb's explanation it would appear it's just an internet age snafu.

A similar thing happened two years ago with the Cleveland Browns when they created pages ahead of time for potential free agent signings and some of them went live. They were taken down quickly.

If he stays or retires the first media outlet to report it will be the Biloxi Sun Herald and Favre's personal mouthpiece Al Jones will report it.

Some people in the know seem to think he'll make up his mind this week..We'll see..Like someone else said, if he retires Arod will be fine. He's more than ready and capable..

I can show you 11,000,000 reasons why he won't retire. I know the guy has made a lot of money over his career, but he's still playing at a high level, his team is very good, and $11,000,000 is still a TON of money, even to Favre.

he came back after they went 8-8 b/c he didn't want to go out with the bad taste of that season lingering. He can't do any better than he did this past year. Brett knows that they have a young team on the upswing and they got to see a small sampling of what Rodgers can do(which looks like he can play). Brett said it took everything he had to comeback for last year and that was when he had a point to prove. what does he have left to prove now? if the ploy of trying to get Randy to convince Brett to comeback for one more year is correct- he's as good as gone. Packers aren't getting Randy
