Report: Panthers give Rivera second interview

Peter King of SI.com is hearing that the Panthers will give Chargers DC Ron Rivera a second interview Sunday.

King was the same source that reported Rivera as the early favorite to land the job in Carolina. It's a great fit, as Rivera figures to revamp Carolina's defense and could bring along San Diego's QBs coach John Ramsdell as his offensive coordinator, a veteran known for his ability to develop young quarterbacks. If there's anyone that could turn jumpstart Jimmy Clausen's stunted progress, it's Ramsdell. Jan. 9 - 11:12 am et

So if Rivera or even another coach bring the 3-4 defense to Carolina, what will this do for Charles Johnson, Beason & OLB's? Does Johnson loose significant value as a fantasy DE? Where will Beason play - Could be a stud rusher as an OLB as he was positioned for much of this year. Will Beason produce like Poz in the new defensive switch or like Vilma in NY? Who stands out as possible studs in a 3-4 and who will struggle with the possible change? Jene you always have outstanding info... Thoughts?

Rivera now has some valuable experience coaching the 3-4 in San Diego, but he's not specifically a 3-4 system guy. He played under Buddy Ryan, and coached under Jim Johnson and Lovie Smith before moving to San Diego and keeping the 3-4 intact there. Given the current Carolina personnel (though Johnson, Anderson, Davis and Marshall are all free agents), I'd think it likely that Rivera would lean 4-3, and probably a more aggressive one that the Panthers have played in recent years.

If it is Rivera and he does choose to go 3-4, I think Charles Johnson has to play DE, Everette Brown probably slots to WOLB and Jon Beason would play inside. Thomas Davis would be the most likely swing talent (like Lawrence Timmons), as a player who could probably play OLB but would likely be a better fit inside. It'd be an aggressive 1-gap 3-4, so I'd expect Beason to be just fine. And, if it's an every-down guy like Thomas Davis inside with him, we could see two very strong IDP options from the ILB positions. And I think Charles Johnson could be productive as a 1-gap end, too.

that's assuming he is even remotely capable following another season ending injury. i would think a player like norwood, who isn't big enough to play DE really, but can be a really good pass rusher, could have value at OLB.

New coach Ron Rivera confirmed Tuesday that he will stick with a 4-3 defensive scheme in Carolina.

Rivera used the 3-4 most recently in San Diego, but he's coached both schemes in the past. Though he promised to use "some elements" of the 3-4 in his new defense, key players such as MLB Jon Beason will stay in their comfort zones. River emphasized that his will be an "attacking" defense, which is pretty much what all new defensive coaches promise.

You were right on the Money Jene!

Rivera's 4-3 may well be based on some of the Tampa-2 underfront concepts he coached under Lovie Smith, which would be great news for those hoping for continued LB2 numbers from James Anderson or Thomas Davis.

i have so little faith in his ability to return to some approximation of his former self after two seasons of serious injuries...
