Panthers HC John Fox said that WR Steve Smith will be listed as questionable this week. Fox did not seem too confident that Smith would be ready for this week's game. Fox made the comments on the Sirius NFL Radio's show, "Movin' The Chains".
Fox admitted yesterday that he can't wait to get explosive wide receiver Steve Smith back on the field, but then said he still doesn't know yet when that will be.
Smith missed all four preseason games with a strained left hamstring and has missed the first two regular-season games because of a strained right hamstring.
"Steve is a great football player," Fox said. "I think he proved that to everybody last year. He's a guy we prefer to have out there. But the reality is he's not. We've got to move on and we've got to make plays without him.
"When he's ready, he'll be in. Right now he's not ready."
Coach John Fox said Carter's finger would not require surgery.Carter, who was injured on a second-quarter reverse, had his right forearm wrapped in a soft cast Monday, from the base of his fingers to just above his wrist."It'll be all right," he said. "Right now it's just a lot more swelling than anything."Carter believes he will be able to play Sunday at Tampa Bay, perhaps wearing a pad on the hand with the fingers taped together.
I find it really hard to believe one player not playing QB means so much to a team, but based on Carolina's performances in the first two weeks it looks like he is vital. don't think they'll rush him back but they need to turn this ship around quick with TB this week. One of those two is in serious trouble come next Monday.

The Panthers really didn't look bad against Minnesota. I thought they played well considering all of their injuries on the offensive line which had to be reshuffled, and Steve Smith and Dan Morgan out. They were controlling the game until in the 4th quarter, when that terrible play was called during the punt return, and it resulted in a fumble in Panther territory. I'm not really so sure how a pad on Carter's hand with his fingers taped together will do, since he seems to have problems holding on to the ball when he has all his fingers free. He has big play potential, but he has the dropsies too. I'll be glad when Smith is back. Not only because he is explosive, but he opens up the offense a lot when he is on the field. Teams have to plan to cover him, which opens up other players. With the addition of Keyshawn (and even DeAngelo), I expect the offense to make more plays once Smith is back.
