Park City, Utah (1 Viewer)

I'm considering buying a second home in Park City and wanted to just learn more about the area.

Things I like about Park City

- Safe

- Wilderness/hiking etc.

- An escape from crowded California

- Low state taxes

- Major airport not too far away

- Solid restaurants

Anything I'm missing, what negatives should I know about?

I live outside of SLC and spend a lot of time in Park City.

The only real negative other than the obvious (real estate prices, though I guess from California you are used to that) is that the shoulder seasons (particularly spring aka mud season) are pretty dead.  As in many restaurants/shops closed type of dead.

Lovely place otherwise with great shops/restaurants in the city and easy access to incredible wilderness nearby.  Very easy to get to from the airport for a place that feels secluded.

@chet has a spot there IIRC

Can be a bit challenging to drive down the mountain in weather/ice. You'll want a proper 4WD setup and know how to drive it.

we go to deer valley every year, to ski.  PC is great!  we dig it.

where are you looking to buy?  i've looked at places on the other side of 80.  i want acreage.  dreaming about retiring in the mountains.  :sigh:

I sold my place in PC in February.  We owned there for about 10 years and will probably buy there again.

Happy to answer any questions and I am somewhat familiar with most areas.

Good to know...still not sure what our rotation will be, but spring is great in SD so that probably won't be tough for us to avoid.

If you had no kids, what would be the ideal area to buy a place and why?

We have no restrictions...we want something in the mountains with trees.  Houses not right on top of each other, but doesn't have to be a ranch either.

Heavily depends on budget, obviously.

You also need to rank the importance of things like ski in/out, summer activities etc because no place in PC has it all.  Our place was in Promontory and had fantastic amenities but no ski in/out.  The Colony has ski in/out but substandard amenities and it can take 20 minutes to get to your house once you pass the gate.  Deer Valley is similar to the Colony but there is a large variation of places--from 1-bedroom condos to the most expensive real estate in the area.
