Passing on the right while driving. (1 Viewer)

Just drove from Raleigh to Pitt and back in the last 5 days. The number of people that just ride the left lane was staggering. Traffic was light for the most part but some people just don't know what lane to use when. A good number of the people doing this were on the phone too. I always want to pull in front of them and slow down to make them change lanes but it is not worth the time. Is this the new norm?

Are these as annoying as the people who drive on the highway at inconsistent speeds? You know the ones who slow down in front of you, then when you go to pass them they feel the need to speed up, hold it for a while and then slow down again?

There is nothing wrong with cruise control on a long, straight, flat highway like the OH turnpike. Better for gas mileage, too!!

How do you handle the situation when it's a semi sitting in the left lane? I want to go around them but I know it's extremely dangerous to pass a truck on the right because they have almost zero visibility.

This happened too. We drove 5 hours last night and had 3 home today and was going to chill drive. I pass this car with my cruise set and then he blows by me. He is stays a 1000 yards ahead. Then I pass a host of cars and got two trailers. I am gaining on the blow by and the trailers are running up on me. All was good for 5 minutes before this started. I just punched it to 90 for 3 mile to get away from the BS.

Usually they are yapping on the phone, or talking with the bozos in their car. I can't drive, so It is my wife driving our van all the time; sometimes it seems like they don't like to be passed by a soccer mom-type!

My wife won't do this and was cringing when I did, I just do it fast. On the way up, we were in the left lane (wife driving) and there were two semi's in the right lane and one car about 10 car lengths head of us in the left lane. We are about where the back tires were of the last semi and he decided he wanted to pass the other. It was a Kroger truck. He didn't see us and just went. She hit the horn and slammed the brakes. (said she had to move my hands,I guess I tired to blow the horn or grab the wheel, I have recall of doing it, just reaction) Well we avoid him, he pulled back to the right after not coming close to passing the other truck. Geez. There is a lot for people that go to pass when they are no where near close to passing the car on the right. When you are 5 car lengths away then go for it. When you are 10 or 15, just stay right if you are traveling close to the same speed.

Worst thing in regards to semis is when they're in the right lane and someone in the left lane doesn't get far enough in front of them to

A) either get over and ride in the right

B) allow everyone enough space to get past the semis and then get over in front of them in the right.

MOTHER####ER..... JUST MOVE SO EVERYONE BEHIND YOU DOESN"T NEED TO SEE SEMI TRUCK TIRES A FOOT AND A HALF FROM THEIR PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW!!!!!!

My wife was a habitual doer of this until I told her I'd break her hand if she did it again....few things annoy me more.

Every driving thread can be summed up with: People who drive slower than you are morons, people who drive faster are maniacs.

And yes, stay out of the left lane unless passing or traffic is pretty much packed.

Other thing is I always you my signals and if a truck passes me I will flash them to let them know they are good. Most people drive like they never had.

You can be slow or fast.....it doesn't matter. Be a good driver. Use the tools of the car and be courtesy. I driver faster then most but when I see someone hustling, I move over and speed up to let them by.

I am also convinced that below speed limit slow driver is much more dangerous then a fast. And if you can't handle the turns in WV don't try to pass on them.

A trucker's blind spot is from the passenger mirror up to the front of the tractor. That's the spot you do not want to stay. Ever. Move through it quickly. If somebody is in front of you, slow down and drop back to where you can see the mirror, which means he can see you.

Pretty sure it's illegal for the semi to even be in the left lane, let alone travel in it.

That's a state to state thing. Some states it's illegal for anybody to use the left lane unless passing.

This happened when I was driving back too. There were two Penske rental trucks in the right lane. They were traveling 55 in a 65. Sparse traffic but they created a bottleneck for all. 15 cars around them. When you would only see one or two cars.

Any driver being passed on the right should be ticketed for driving too slow in the flow of traffic.
Yep. Some state should take the lead on this. Whip the highways into shape. Not huge fines, just enough to make people feel put out. The humiliation and hassle of being pulled over and having to make the payment is probably enough. It would be a highway whisperer kind of approach to getting people to pay attention to what they're doing and if they can't be bothered to think of others, they'll think of their own interests.
