Action Jacksons

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots made it official today, activating receiver Chad Jackson and cornerback Eddie Jackson off the physically unable to perform list.

The team released safety Ray Ventrone to make room on the roster.

The Patriots are now full on their 53-man roster. Ventrone has practice squad eligibility and could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Today was the final day of the 21-day window the Patriots had to make a decision on both Chad Jackson and Eddie Jackson. Both players opened the year on the PUP list, recovering from knee injuries.

You mean that WR bust they drafted? I don't think he'd start for any team in the NFL.
For better or for worse, Jackson may take over for Stallworth next year (I doubt the Pats give Stallworth something like $11 million to play next year).

Huh ?Dude has not had a legitimate shotto prove himself. I would not tag him withthe "benson" label just yet.
He had his shot last year, gimped along through injury, and didn't show the team enough so they went out and picked up Moss, Stallworth, and Welker. The Patriots* botched that pick, and they know it, Patriots* fans know it, and in no way does Chad Jackson make any team better unless its addition by subtraction.

They botched that pick as in should have drafted someone else or botched that pick as in Chad Jackson will never be a starting calibur WR in the NFL?I'd agree that they should've went a different route with the pick but by no means am I writing Jackson off yet.

I'm real interested to see what the kid has to offer. Last year was pretty much a waste but there is definetly some physical skill there. Hopefully the lightbulb has gone on and the kid lives up to the promise the Pats saw in him when they traded up in the second round.

I'm with Yudkin as far as the Stallworth role. Welker's around for a long time and I fully expect Moss to hammer out a deal with the Pats to remain. While I like Stallworth my guess is the money will be far better elsewhere and I don't blame him one bit for chasing it. If Jax develops he can take over that role next year at a pretty cheap price.

Could ADP get both the Rookie of the Year award and the League MVP? What would it take to dethrone Tom Brady? I guess Randy Moss is in the mix for MVP, anyone else?

I never liked him and I never will.

even if they did would stallworth hang around. he doesnt seem like the Ill accept being 3rd or 4th option if it means winning super bowls type of guy.

He's doing a great job playing the part this year...

youre truly desperate here, man. regroup and try living again.

Chad Jackson is no more a bust than Cris Carter after a year. That guy was a worthless bum for 3 years before he clued in. He's gonna be taking passes from the best QB of his time. Ill give him atleast a fair shot at success.

I wouldnt put it past them to tear up that old deal and sign a one year deal to make another run. Seems fairly happy there, and he's got plenty of years left to make money.

While he may want to stick around, players still want to get paid. Stallworth has a total of $8 million in roster bonuses prior to the season next year. If the Pats don't want to pay him, they will have to cut him. Stallworth may consider re-signing with the Pats, but if he gets a ring this year his incentive to play for a winner may go down. If the choice is cashing in somewhere else or playing another year (or longer) for low dollars, I'm not sure he'll just say oh well and stick around. And we all know the history of the Pats lowballing the contract negotiations with their players.

Agreed. I'd be surprised if Stallworth is back next year.

Don't forget Troy Brown.
I'm not hearing great things about Troy Brown. He may not be activated this year.
Would they cut him or put him on IR? Isn't the deadline next week?
No, they have 21 days from PUP activation - which was this week. They will find a way, if only for sentimental value. They found a way to keep him around this long (including the offseason) - he'll be here come playoff time.

Chad Jackson has great physical skills and had (has) a lousy attitude. The Pats will give him another shot to develop. This is Brown's last year and I have to agree that they will try to work something out with Moss. Moss has evidently fit in with the team a lot better than many thought possible given his sketchy past.

Stallworth is creating value just by staying healthy. He certainly has shown a willingness to play the role asked of him which increases his value as well.

Jackson is likely on a short leash though.

Wide receivers take longer to develop as a rule to begin with.

Lendale White has proven prognosticators wrong, I wouldn't write off Jackson just yet. Besides, in that offense it's worth a gamble.

Here's reporter Boston Globe Christopher Gasper had to say in a chat session yesterday:
I think the Patriots are going to buy as much time as they can with Troy before making a decision. They have until 4 p.m. on the day after the end of the 21-day evaluation period to activate him. We're talking about Week 12 at that point. Who knows? An injury might open a spot for him. I would be surprised if they cut Kelley Washington to clear room for Brown. Washington has become a big special teams contributor and has been invaluable on the scout team. He played Dallas Clark in practice all week, leading up to Indy.I think that Eddie Jackson will be activated if he's healthy enough. I think he would have been activated instead of Ray Ventrone, if he had been good to go. I think Chad Jackson is headed for a redshirt year. That's just a hunch. I think we'll see Troy Brown at some point this year. You have to remember that injuries play a big part in these decisions. Suddenly, unexpected roster spots can open (see, Morris, Sammy).

Dman, you have issues w/ the Pats.

Why not activate Jackson? I still like the pick. Who knew we'd be able to sign both Stallworth and Washington and get Mossin a trade? Keep in mind this all happened in an offseason where Jackson was recovering from an ACL. Activate him and see what he can do.

Bust? Isn't the 3rd year the year for WR's to break out?
