Patriots Pass Defense (1 Viewer)

Pats have been pretty soft against the pass so far.

Can someone give us an update as to whether the Pats are really that bad v. the pass or have they simply had a couple of down games?

I'd say they are average at best. And when you consider that they're run defense is pretty stout, attacking the Patriots through the air is the best way to move the chains. And when you add the fact that most teams are going to be trying to come from behind as the Pats offense scores all the time, I expect QBs/WRs facing the Patriots D to put up solid numbers all year long.

Just look at the turnover in their secondary, recent draft picks and free agents at best under performed and at worst have been cut. If they had a good pass rush they could mask the secondary problems, but they don't so expect teams to have lots of success going airborne against them.

Its only gonna get better, fantasy wise its gonna look bad.

Pass rush is unstoppable. The injuries in the secondary are nagging, even with the problems they are having I still expect them to finish in the top 5 for turnovers.

On paper, Pats highscoring offense is gonna force teams to throw early and often, their pass rush is going to force bad throws and their above average secondary is gonna make plays.

First half vs 2nd half scoring... Pats have been getting out in front and then have been playing bend don't break defense in the 2nd half of games. Not saying its the only reason but it could be a factor.
Just dragging the game out imo, get a lead and slow down the game (still gonna run it up, because why not). I think Belichick is finally confident enough in his offense to play like this.

They are not good (yet), but imho they are not nearly as bad as their numbers suggest. New schemes, new players, lots of youth = incohesive. They will/should get better as the season rolls on.

I hope so. Soneone just dropped them. I was all set to start 9er D as a stopgap for Saints D this week.Far as know Pats D should never touch waivers correct?

If your league awards pts for turnovers or defensive touchdowns correct, similar situation to the saints D, I like the pats sack potential a bit more tho.

Well now I have both Saints and Pats D. I've gone to several sites to see their rankings and Pats D is all over the board this week.Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson have been hot up to this point, games in Buffalo too. I don't know what to make of this, seeing limited Pats and Bills games so far this year.Is Pats D a solid choice this week?

Yes we are, the point im making is they are better than the yards/points allowed suggest - a lot of people still recovering from injury but still performing well, on the other side of the ball the pats are unstoppable this is causing teams to go into catch-up mode throwing deep and often, Pats have a decent secondary but they arent world beaters. On paper the Pats have one of the best DLines out there and you have seen flashes of it already this season, it can only get better.6 Sacks (2+Ravens - T~Bears - 2+Lions - 1-Packers - T~Jets - T~Steelers)

3 Ints (1-Ravens - 2+Bears - 1-Lions - T~Packers - 2-Jets - 3+Steelers)

2 Forced Fumbles recovered (2-Ravens - T~Bears - 2-Lions - T~Packers - 1+Jets - 2+Steelers)

Article that more accurately depicts my view: Padded stats do Pats D little justice

I think they're a real reach this week in most leagues. Not only have they looked horrible (especially against the pass) but they will be without Haynesworth and Chung. I think the Bills are looking great this week offensively.

Thanks Packersfan. Yeah after I saw Haynesworth was out I dumped them for 9ers again...Bengals are out there too but I have no idea who to go with this week as my Saints D has a tough matchup with Houston this week.

Niners D is very startable this week, its a good play imo, better than Bengals for sure (Saints also), Starting Lions vs Min over Pats vs Bills myself.

It's not bad or anything, it's just that for being in a lot of situations where they can pin their ears back and fly at the QB they don't have as many sacks as I expected. It's early though and it's a unit I expect to get better as the season goes on.

I didn't read the Bedard article (above), thanks for the like, I'll get there soon.

The Pats D will likely improve as the season progresses - usually the Belichick defenses do.

Here's the thing about the Pass D: it's a passing league. You look at the number of QBs who are putting up 300yd games every week and it's apparent that most team give it up in the air - especially teams with high scoring, passing offenses of their own.

What's better/different about this Pats D is that they actually make a play every now and then - sack/int/fumle - there was a 2 or 3 year stretch in NE where the defense rarely made any plays - at least now they make that occasional stop thereby making it tougher for teams to go BlowForBlow with their potent offense.

Not even out of the first quarter, Pats march down the field uncontested then on the bills possession blow up the pocket after a huge pass from Fitzpatrick forcing a terrible throw that was easily picked off.

Update?
Pass rush forced two more picks one of which got overturned by a questionable pass interference call, no sacks this week Pass D started to struggle after Bradys 3rd pick.

This is a pretty sorry unit. They've been lit up in all three games. They were a strong fantasy defense last season because they scored TDs and had a strong return game. With Brandon Tate gone the return game has vanished and the defense doesn't put enough consistent pressure on the QB to generate TD potential. There aren't many good fantasy defenses after three weeks but the Patriots right now look to be one of the worst.
