Patriots stealing signals? (1 Viewer)

I remember Don Banks writing an article about sign stealing this summer - Specifically mentioning the videocamera thing and how the league has cracked down on it.

I guess this is really going to tarnish the "genius" label.

At what point do they just take away a #1 pick and make a real statement?

I imagine if they were actually interferring with the frequencies and taping the signals then they would get hit pretty hard. That's blatant cheating. Not much wiggle room there.

I wonder how common this is? If it's very common they are being singled out because of their status.
IIRC, Don Banks reported that it was pretty widespread - A lot of home teams apparently had an extra camera up in the press box that focused solely on the opposing signal callers. But the NFL made it a point to remind all the teams that it was against the rules. If the Pats were still doing this, they deserve whatever punishment gets handed down.If the NFL rules that there was nothing to this, the Jets come off looking like a bunch of whiners desperate for excuses.Gonna be interesting.

I've never heard of it with any other team. I don't exactly follow it though. Perhaps someone else can chime in if they know.
The Giants were accused of it the year of their last Superbowl run. They trounced the Eagles and then another team (the Bucs?) in the playoffs and there were some accusations of sign stealing. I don't remember the particulars though.

Jets can't look good either way.

Scenario 1: It's widespread, they knew the Pats would be doing it (especially with Mangini being under Bellichick) and still got their signals stolen.

Scenario 2: The Pats didn't do it. Obvious result.

I cant believe this!! Why would they all of a sudden get punished now, when it was swept under the rug the 1st time? I think that NE will get away with this one too.

Here's another blurb about it taken from one of the Jet messageboards:

JC Exclusive - Pats accused of taping signals

It’s no secret the Jets and Patriots are two organizations that aren’t on the best of terms. And after the stunt the Patriots reportedly pulled at the Meadowlands on Sunday, the relationship might have just taken a turn for the worse.

According to a Meadowlands source, a member of the Patriots organization, with a credential issued by the team, was spotted by Jets security chief Steve Yarnell shooting near the New York bench.

And according to the stadium source, when questioned by Yarnell, the unnamed individual said that he was put up to it by the Patriots.

The cameraman was reportedly accused by Yarnell of shooting the Jets' signals that were being sent by the coaches from the sidelines.

The source says that the NFL is being made aware of this accusation.

If this is true, the Patriots could be subject to a serious punishment from the league office.

Or maybe just clever gamesmanship by the Pats.

Suppose they analyze the videotape and find the guy wasn't stealing signs at all...

That would be hysterical.

This cheating I have much less a problem with than the cheating they do on the field.

PS - bitter Rams fan

"That type of sign-stealing goes on a ton in the league,'' said one NFL source who was both a former coach and player in the league.

Banks goes on to say this about Free Agency: One way that insight can be helpful is in the identifying of an opponent's calls at the line of scrimmage, from a first-hand source who played or coached for that team in the recent past.

You mean like Mangini bringing Reche Caldwell in the week the Jets play the Pats? :fishing:

Nothing to see here. If the Pats get fined or docked a draft pick, so be it.

Frankly, if this is all true, then the NFL wouldn't be going far enough by taking away draft picks. The punishment should be the forfeiture of the game. Because the bottom line in the NFL is about winning or losing. And if they cheated like that and it helped them win in any way, then that win should be wiped off the books.

Unless Goodell is behind this. If this was ordered by the commish, he is quickley surpassing Dirty Harry, and people will soon be scared to death the mess with him. Players going down with bad conduct, asst coaches nailed and if he tattoos the Pats for somthing shady, this is going to be the cleanest sport around in no time.

I'm pretty sure that's Goodell's new penalty for holding and offsides, too. Immediate forfeiture of the game.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Jets....A Security guy questioned a guy filming the Jets sideline - It will be investigated... That's all....It's not about the score of the game, whining or excuses about anything... The Jets got whupped by probably the best team in the NFL while they continue to rebuild..... Seperate issues.

BB hates the possibility of losing to the JETS, but this is going way too far. So he is pissed at Mangini for leaving and using tactics that BB himself does, (ie: Reche Caldwell being brought in), but this is just disgusting. As if I didnt hate BB enough before these accusations, this just makes me sick to my stomach and I hope that if these allegations are proven true, I hope Goodell comes down with the same authority he does to the players.

You want him to suspend the Patriots' cameraman for four games? That doesn't seem to be sending the right message at all.

These are professionals we are talking about right? Maybe teams should consider sending a dummy set of signs in to throw the other team off. Wait that only works in college. Stealing signals is a part of every game that uses them. If they can adjust to it in Little League, you'd think the NFL could do the same.

Huh, I guess there is something to the paranoia. Watching the Pack/Eagles game yesterday, they frequently showed the Eagles' defensive coordinator with two guys literally standing in front of him with towels held up to cover his face when he was giving signals.

I kept wondering why he couldn’t just hold up his own clipboard in front of his face, but whatever works I guess…
