That was my thought exactly re: one year contract. Works well for both parties. Pats can see what they have in Chad Jackson; Gaffney gets a chance to play himself into a 2009 pay day (either with Pats in case Jackson busts, or another team). But on a side note, good for Gaffney. Glad to see the guy was able to resuscitate his career after David Carr did his damnedest to kill it.very good signing. A one year deal is ideal so the Pats can evaluate Chad Jackson and possibly draft another young wr.
Couldn't agree more.very good signing. A one year deal is ideal so the Pats can evaluate Chad Jackson and possibly draft another young wr.
Agreed about Gaffney. This move means that there were no surprise losses. Everyone they've lost was pretty much expected. They've now stabilized the O. With Moss and Gaffney returning and a healthy Sammie Morris and David Thomas (who I'm pretty high on) they've ensured that that unit is top of the line. I'm sure they'll make a few more complimentary moves on that side of the ball but now they can get to work on filling the holes on defense and get that unit a little younger and faster.Good for him. I like Gaffney a lot. Good receiver, good guy. I like the way he handled himself this past year. Real good team guy.Things have really turned around for the Pats the last few days.
Ithink you're confusing him with Reche...I think the right smiley for Jabar here is![]()
7th Round (Pick 235) Jeremy Ebert (WR, Northwestern)The Patriots now have the following players at receiver:Wes Welker (unsigned franchise tag)Brandon LloydGaffneyDeion BranchDonte StallworthAnthony GonzalezJulian EdelmanChad OchocincoTiquan UnderwoodMatthew SlaterBritt Davis
Outside of Wes Welker, I think WR has been BB's worst talent evaluating position, bar none.Oh man this is a funny thread to bring back."Brilliant move by the Pats! They sign Jabar Gaffney so that they have a year to evaluate Chad Jackson!"I'm a big fan of Belichick, but man he gets the benefit of the doubt a little too easily...
Do all of his WR mistakes add up to Tommy Vardell, 9th overall pick?Outside of Wes Welker, I think WR has been BB's worst talent evaluating position, bar none.Oh man this is a funny thread to bring back."Brilliant move by the Pats! I am not sure how to respond to this other than everything is relative. For Gronk to have been worth a first round pick, people would have to project him to having another recordbreaking (or close to it) season again. It was a decent bet he would not repeat his 2011 numbers anyway, so I would not have taken him in the first round to begin with.As far as the Pats having too many mouths to feed, I would think that they will put their best players on the field. They won't be playing 6 WR at a time, so I think Gronk will still be on the field a lot. They won't be pulling Gronk to sneak in Ochocinco and Stallworth. Also, he is their best red zone threat, so I would guess he will remain their leading scorer. I think Gaffney will go back to the role he had in NE in the past . . . not the role he had last year in WAS.there goes the 'take Gronkowski in the first round' argument.
wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole now..
too many mouths to feed in NE..
no way he comes close to 2011 numbers, probably not even 70%..
Agree. Add Jeremy Ebert into this, he should make the final cut. I think 85 is out.Slater will make squad (special teams). Stallworth and Davis are gone, as well as Gonzalez. Edelman will stay. Ocho will depend on camp and other positions taking up the 53. Rotational WRs: welker, Lloyd, Branch, Gaffney.
Gonzo wouldn't crack the top 5 in places like Indy, Jax and STL, regardless of pay/cap...I doubt it he makes it past week one in training camp. Edelman is a better receiver and has played some d-back for them, so that is one less roster spot to burn on a backup (he literally could fill three spots in wr, db, and special teams...waaaay to valuable to let go for a "never has" like Gonzo. So who makes the team & what role do they play:
Wes Welker - Slot w/ WR1 #s
Brandon Lloyd - WR1 w/ WR1 #s
Gaffney - WR2 w/ WR2 #s
Deion Branch - primarily a back up
Donte Stallworth
Anthony Gonzalez -back up slot WR (Edelman role)
Julian Edelman
Chad Ochocinco
Tiquan Underwood
Matthew Slater
Britt Davisx
Underwood's now gone.Agree first 4 are probably safe. Disagree Gonzalez takes over Edelman's role (I actually think Edelman stays with his versatility). I think Slater would remain as #6.So who makes the team & what role do they play:

bc of gaffney? since when was feeding him a priority?'Tanner9919 said:there goes the 'take Gronkowski in the first round' argument.

That's silly. Gronkowski is that starting TE. Any play that calls for a TE; Gronkowski is the first guy they will go to. From what I understand there are few instances where Gronkowski is on the bench while Hernandez is on the field.1.) Gaffney is the one who has to come into camp and beat out veteran receivers.'Tanner9919 said:there goes the 'take Gronkowski in the first round' argument.
