Pats WR's Brown, Caldwell, Gabriel (1 Viewer)

None of them seem like top fantasy contributors at this point. The Patriots want to run the ball, spread the ball out across a bunch of receivers, and if they have a #1 target right now, it's Watson. I think Troy Brown is their best WR at this point, just by nature of his experience and ability to get open, but there's enough of a cap on how well he can do that I wouldn't want to risk starting him. I don't think Gabriel was brought in to be the savior here; I think he's a guy who might end up with 40 catches if he's lucky. And Caldwell is still working himself into the mix.

I'd look to a receiver from another team right now, unless you either have to drop a guy that's out for season, like a Greg Jones, and want to pick up a lottery ticket like Jackson, or need a WR specifically for next week, in which case I'd lean towards Brown. Otherwise, wait and see who the hot waiver wire pickups are next week - there's bound to be a few, and all will look better than the Pats receivers at this point.

What Fred said. No Pats WR is going to be able to contribute consistantly. If it's anyone, it will be Chad Jackson, and even then not until the end of the season if he gets on the field and produces.

flip a coin...i wouldn't use any of them unless i was in the most dire bye-week jam. i AM sitting on chad jackson in my keeper though, because i think he has the most potential to separate himself from the rest of the rabble, even if takes til next season.

If it helps any, I have D-Jax and Steve Smith as my starters in a Dynasty league with very little depth. As a result I picked up and started Troy Brown in week 1 because I didn't want to rely on my other back-ups. I figured who else, other than Watson, would catch the passes? Well I lucked out in that Brown actually caught a TD so his 7 fantasy points were helpful. That being said, I plan on dropping him this week in a waiver wire move. He did his job for the week but there's no way I'd want to rely on him again as a back-up, especially since he did only catch 2 passes in week 1.

T. Brown will be the best FFer of the group. He knows the O and scheme. Is trusted by Brady and really just isnt all that bad a WR to begin with. I picked him up off of wavers as soon as I realized the Branch situation was more serious than 1st believed. Paid off already in week 1.

I have been saying for weeks the answer is Troy Brown. He will put up #'s between wr 30-45, probably closer to the back end of that.

I wouldn't highly recommend any but if I had to choose one it's Gabriel. My reasoning is he has the most upside. My take on their WRs.

Jax-A rookie WR who missed all of camp is usually not a recipe for fantasy success. No doubt he could come in and hit the ground running but that's not too usual in this type of situation.

Caldwell-So far he looks bad. I honestly can't say anything positive to date about his play. He seems to have a very difficult time getting open.

Brown-A much better real player than fantasy player. He'll be ok but even in his prime he never put up real big numbers (especially in the TD department). His upside is very limited and the fact he's 35 is not a bonus. Don't look for more than a couple of "big" weeks from him. He's a chain mover which helps in real football but is nothing special in fantasy.

Gabriel-If he lives up to his billing as a big WR with good hands who can stretch the field he'll have the best opportunity (key word here being opportunity) to be a productive fantasy WR. He's learning a new and difficult offense so the learning curve is a concern. Yet, if you look at what the Pats currently have and how he could be used he has by far the most upside of any WR on the team unless Jax hits the ground running in a big way. Brady needs a field stretcher and if Gabriel's that guy they will definetly go his way long on a weekly basis which could lead to some big games.

My guess is anyone looking at these guys is hopefully not looking for a starter right now. If that's the case adding Gabriel and seeing how he evolves over the next few weeks is your best bet for getting a nice bang for your buck. If you need help this week than Troy is your guy.

I don't disagree that Brown is probably the best of the bunch but doesn't it scare anyone that he only had 2 receptions in week 1? I would think Brady would go to him more often than that.

The problem is he was their #1 WR last week. He can't handle that role. The further he slides down in the rotation the more effective he'll be.

I am intrigued by Gabriel, but I still

think there are not enough footballs in NE to go around,

tons of talented targets, but no true standouts.

I don't know, Chad Jackson looked like the guy here. He had a few catches, scored a TD and I noticed at least in one sitution that he was the only receiver on the field in at the goalline.

NE WR's and fantasy have never coincided for me. Players disappear for 2 weeks and then reappear. They spread the ball around too much, for fantasy, great for NFL.

Right now, I'd take Brown. By seasons end, I'd take Jackson. For their passing game, I'd take Watson all year.

I gotta say Jackson. In his first regular season game, the dude has the third most receptions on the team (behind only Watson and the veteran Brown) and he didn't even start. This guy's gonna be quality and quick.

I wouldn't touch any of them, but if a gun was held to my head then I'd pick Brown. Brady and Brown have the best chemistry when it comes to throwing to a WR who will make the correct adjustment to what the defense shows on 3rd and 5 or near the goalline (see the TD vs. Buffalo in week 1). Jackson looked decent vs. NY, but all the throws to him were set plays, especially the TD, in which no adjustment was required. Will such success continue as opposing coaches can view such set plays on game film and be prepared for them in the future? What if Jackson makes the wrong adjustments? As for Gabriel, who knows what he really brings besides being a long ball threat.

I think this season is going to end up like the Patriots' 2003 season, where Deion Branch led the WRs with 57 receptions and 800 yards, while a bunch of other guys (Brown/Givens/Johnson/Patten) were solid role players.

One of these WRs WILL end up with at least 60 catches and 800 yards. But I have no idea who that guy will be.
