Paul Tagliabue's effect on the NFL's success (1 Viewer)

Some questions for you to chew on...

Did Paul Tagliabue himself make the NFL the juggernaut it is today or did the sport do it on it's own? What has Roger Goodell done so far and what will he likely bring to the table for the future? Is the NFL's notoriety still on the rise or will it decline in the coming years? How much of a role will the NFL Network play in all of this? Are we looking at a pay-per-view Super Bowl in the not-so-distant future as a result of increased interest in making money not fans?

Unless I'm mistaken, there were no work stoppages on his watch, which is an accomplishment.

FA and the salary cap were introduced on his watch, but I don't know how much he influenced that versus the agendas of the parties involved.

Overall he seemed to have a steady hand and assisted a growing industry in continuing to grow. :(

I'm hard pressed to think of anything he did that wasn't already basically in place from Pete Rozelle's era. Maybe the stadium funding pool of money.

he was a great facilitator in the CBA extension. I think Goodell will follow closely in his footsteps as he was Tagliabue's 2nd

I think he oversaw expansion in a positive way and television contracts.

Nothing major...don't know.

Personally I think it's just about peaked. FF has been a growth driver and I think the fad will wane. Gambling has been a growth driver and tighter innernet gambling restrictions could strave this off.

How much of a role will the NFL Network play in all of this?

That depends on the direction the take the Network.

Based on the ad revenue I don't see this event going pay per view any time soon.

Pete Rozelle is the one who, imo, transformed the NFL to what it is today. The main thing he did was to upgrade the image after the AFL merger and creat some unity. Tags continued the commitment to image. The NFL has such a great image. This image withstands TO, steroids, etc and is not hurt by it. Think about it this way. What other sport punishes for DUIs? The NFL has players doing endorsements and commercials for big brands and high end products. Why? because of the image of the players. The NBA, through the dress code change and other changes, is trying ot upgrade ts image, too. When promoting a product, image is everything.

:lmao: A lot of respect for Tags and what he did. But he did just continue what Rozelle had put in place. On the business side, the extension to the CBA as well as getting owners of Dallas, Denver, Houston, Giants, Jets, , Washington, Philly to revenue share was amazing. I thought he could get most people on board, but not the big markets. The marketing machine that is the NFL is also partly his doing along with Rozelle. Rozelle started it, but Tags took it to a new level. His committment to the drug policy also has to be applauded. This guy did it before Congress made an issue of it. To this day, I'm still confused why players can't drink if they are in the program, but if it's that strict, so be it. Also, making Gene Upshaw his personal puppet was great as well. The TV deals and the dollars associated with them alone are enough to cement Tags place in the HOF.
