Dennis Northcutt, WR JAX.

Jacksonville brought him in to be the slot receiver and returner, and paid him $17 million with a $4.5 million signing bonus. He's been trapped in Cleveland his whole career, and has never been a touchdown guy, but he's got a chance to catch 40-50 balls for Jacksonville with the disappointing production they've gotten from their other receivers.

I would prefer to have paired him with Wilford, especially now that I know the guy I took likely wouldn't have gone, but I'm happy with my last two picks.

I see him as 4th WR on the depth chart, but I suppose anything could happen.

I don't think they gave him more than $5 million to play for this year and $17 over 5 to be their #4, but I don't think he's going to step in and be a stud, either. He's still young, and yet he's got more experience than anyone on their depth chart right now. The rest of them have shown flashes, but there's a reason that the #1 WR wasn't drafted until 120 picks in the draft and their #2 didn't go until 160. There's room for a guy to step in and produce. I'm not saying he'll be a stud, but I think he's a very good value as the 269th player selected.

I think Northcutt has several factors working in his favor:a) He's a very different WR than what they currently have so he gives them an added dimensionb) He's the type of WR that would benefit greatly from Koetter's spread offense(probably why they went after him)c) Jax management seems to have something against Wilfordd) and as already mentioned Jax will be eager to show that their money was well spent

Hey, after 10 rounds we're all fishing to a certain extent, and it's just a matter of which lake each of us wants to troll in.

Sorry about the delay. Had some yard work late afternoon and just finished up my taxes. I am so glas that is over for the year.

Pick up in a few...

Sure, but I'm actually interested in a discussion about the player. I think he's severely underrated right now. I think he may have value in a standard league, not just as a sleeper pick in survivor. I'd be interested in hearing the argument for seeing him as nothing more than the 4th WR.

Hey, after 10 rounds we're all fishing to a certain extent, and it's just a matter of which lake each of us wants to troll in.
Sure, but I'm actually interested in a discussion about the player. I think he's severely underrated right now. I think he may have value in a standard league, not just as a sleeper pick in survivor. I'd be interested in hearing the argument for seeing him as nothing more than the 4th WR.
UM.. Where did he rank in terms of targets for Cleveland? Personally, I think Matt, Reggie and MJD will ALL have more recepts than him.

Given that no one has really emerged as WRs in JAX, any of the four guys certainly could at some point. The other three have not done so to date, so that may been indiciative that Northcutt will get more of a shot than the other three. That being said, he had some chances in Cleveland and never really stood out. In 7 seasons, he battled against Kevin Johnson, David Patten, Quincy Morgan, Jajuan Dawson, Andre King, Andre Davis, Frisman Jackson, Antonio Bryant, at one point a banged up Braylon Edwards, Josh Cribbs, and Joe Jurevicius for a more significant role. Of course, there were circumstances that contributed to how that played out.Certainly the Browns were never confused for the Martz-led Rams offense, they had their share of injuries, and they never really had a noteworthy QB at the helm. At this point we have no idea what his actual role will be in JAX, whether he will click with Leftwich, and how they plan on rotating the receiving corp. The fact of the matter is we just don't know, but at this point IMO he starts as the #4 and will have to earn his way up the food chain as he adapts and learns along the way.

Third, behind Jurevicius and Edwards. He averaged 53 receptions the three years before last year, but was replaced by Jurevicius. He'd also pretty much quit on a passing game whose quarterbacks have been Derek Anderson, Charlie Frye, Trent Dilfer, Jeff Garcia, Kelly Holcomb, Luke McCown, Tim Couch, Doug Pederson, and Spergon Wynn. That's a pretty ugly list of quarterbacks, even before we start talking about the rest of the team. You're right, though, I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Jones, Reggie Williams and MJD all have more receptions than him, but with Jones at 41 receptions, Reggie Williams at 52, and MJD at 46 last year, none of them getting even 650 yards, and the team undergoing QB trouble and questioning their WRs, I think there's room for a new guy to carve out a spot for himself on the team.

WR Bobby Engram is my next pick, btw. Another guy who has produced in the past, but appears to be buried a little on the depth charts.

In his rookie season in 2000, he was second on the team in receptions with 38, behind Kevin Johnson, and one catch ahead of Patten. In his second year, he barely played. In his third season, he was third on the depth chart behind KJ and Quincy Morgan. He still had 38 receptions, and a young Andre Davis had 37. The team got rid of Kevin Johnson, and if you remember, felt pretty good about their young receivers at the time. In his fourth season, it was Northcutt who led the team in receptions with 62 for 729 yards. Davis and Morgan had just 40 and 38 each. 41 of those were with Kelly Holcomb, the other 21 were with Couch, who the Browns got rid of in the offseason. In his fifth season, Northcutt again led the team in receptions, this time with 55 for 806 yards. Next on the team was Antonio Bryant, with 46 for 546. The quarterbacks were Garcia, Holcomb, and McCown. In his sixth season, Bryant emerged, with 69 catches for 1009 yards. Northcutt was second with 42 receptions for 441 yards. Unspectacular, but so was the play of Trent Dilfer and Charlie Frye, who combined for 3323 yards, 15 TDs, and 18 INTs. In his seventh season, the team went out and got Joe Jurevicius, and a finally-healthy Winslow led the league in receptions with 89. Between Winslow, Heiden, Edwards, and Jurevicius, there really wasn't a lot of room left for a #3 WR to put up big numbers, and Northcutt was asked to focus more on his role as a returner while putting up just 21 receptions. So overall, I don't think he was that disappointing - I think he's just a possession/slot receiver who will never get great TD numbers but is otherwise pretty solid. I know this is a lot of text for a 17th round pick, but he's an intriguing player to me, and one I knew I could get super late.

Many mock drafts have Jacksonville taking a WR in the first round.I personally expect them to take Dwayne Bowe, but others have Meachem or Ginn. The nice tie-in for Bowe is that the new WR coach is also from LSU. Regardless, a new kid in town knocks all 4 WRs down a peg - and 3 of them know the offense. I like Northcutt to see the field and contribute, but on a team with two solid RBs and a HC that favors running and playing D, I don't see much action for WRs, let alone the 3rd/4th/5th options.Oh, and Mike Tice is the TE coach, IIRC, so he's already focusing on improving the TE position as well. That's a lot of fighting for the ball.
