Had a great time. Hiked just shy of three miles down a mountain fire road. Located the bird with the mouth call. Moved within 100 yards and struck four hen yelps on the slate call. Two adult gobblers came running in and a load of #5's at 25 yards did the trick. Carrying an 18 pound bird back up the mountain was fun. Have one more tag to fill, but need to devote more time to cycling.

No VAtech jokes here, but I was in the same mountain range.

A slate call is a round piece of slate or glass that you hold in your hand while you rub a wood stick against it. The slate or glass is scratched with material to made it rough so the wood stick (called a striker) creates vibration. Best way to explain it is running your fingernails down a chalk board. Basically this duplicates the calls that a hen (female turkey) makes. It's spring so when the males hear this call they come looking for some loving. It's not quite that simple as turkeys have very acute eyesight and any motiion sends then running off.You use a shotgun to hurt turkeys. #5's is the size or diameter of the shot (think BBs/pellets) in the shell. There are numerous pellets in a shotgun shell. Since you generally can't approach turkeys, you need to call them inside of 50 yards to be able to kill them. Rifles are not legal to use and would be very dangerous in the spring woods that has vegetation starting to bloom/emerge/etc.

You nailed the last one. Here are some pictures of the area / terrain. Although I'm dying to get out west to check out your national parks, these are pretty nice for a two hour drive. Grand Canyon of NC.

Damn...was really hoping he'd slide to me. Kubiak says he has starter ability and right now he's the #2...with Schaub in town I don't see why he doesn't have 60 reception upside.Real nice pick here.
