I've never experienced that, but it's definitely moronic behavior.

One of the coolest moments I remember from childhood was the theater erupting when Vader threw Palpatine over that railing.

I recognize the gray area between "understand" and "disagree."  I acknowledge that there are reasons for the above - like nationalism, any reason to celebrate, there used to be a good portion of people who didn't graduate high school, and that people may wrongly think Columbus was a decent dude. But applying any level of critical thinking to those situations and it starts to become difficult, at least for me, to logically understand why so many people embrace them/engage in them. 

Ok. That makes way more sense.
