Per PFT: Roaf may retire! (1 Viewer)

2 questions from someone who knows little about the salary cap:

1) What is the impact this year on the Chiefs salary cap?

2) Since apparently Roaf had informed members of the organization earlier, is there any chance that this was kept quiet so the team could appear less able to give Ty Law more $ than he signed for?
generally players are released, at this point in the offseasonsee this old Deion article

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/..._retirement_ap/

Skins released him not long after he signed a big contract

Roaf is due to make 3.5 mil for the next few years, no clue about his bonus or how he and the Chiefs will work that out.
Thanks for the info, Bri.

sorry to be on topic-

Is that NFLE T gonna get a decent shot to play?
Basically here is the situation.......Both Tackle spots open....

4 guys competing....those being

Kyle Turley

Will Svitek (NFLEL)

Jordan Black (great run blocker, worst pass blocker ever)

Kevin Samspn (was slated to start @ RT last year but had injury trouble)

With that foundation, here is what I think on whom should/will start

1. Turley will start for this team. He is talking like it, so are the KC coaches and he ran with the first team today. I would start him @ LT based on experience. You dont have to be 350 to play tackle....heck you dont have to be 300. Casey Weigmann is the smallest Center in the league (285) and is a top-5 Center.

2. I would think that Svitek has the most talent of the other three by a long shot. but Black has a lot of experience starting @ both tackle spots and could allow KC to ease Svitek into the role of RT. I would like Svitek to start as I think like Carl Peterson--CP thinks KC stole him as a 6th rounder. The kid was a honors scholar @ Stanford so he is smart enough to pick up the system. He was All-Pro in NFLEL and the organization has gushed over him since last season.

Thats what I see happening.

I'm concerned about Turley's weight. (C comment doesn't "hold weight" because he's shielded by thre rest of the line IMO normally the lightest line position too)

Ya don't have to be 300....yeah well that's the norm or maybe even 320. He's not Strahan getting lighter to try and add some speed to get around the big guys, he is the big guy.

IIRC Turley did lose weight to add speed to play TE. I hope Herm adds a few plays where Turley gets out wide and leads things for LJ almost like a pulling guard.

Real curious how he'll adjust to this. It IS their line coach that's their OC so if any Chief coach can adjust an O due a to an OL change I guess it'd be him.

I also gotta say I'm worried about Tony G + Green now. They can't have him stay into help block a ton but with those Ts, it seems they might need to. He is their passing offense. Him staying in to block on a pass play is almost pointless.

With Green, or any QB, you want solid Ts to protect em' and a top FB as the last line of defense. The guy "never" gets hurt and sudden;y his protectors are very different.

Hey kevin,

didn't Wellbourne retire recently at a young age, like 29 or 30? Any chance he comes back?

If you make your way to camp, please let us know how Turley does when DJ rushes the QB. He, IMO, is an awesome young talent and well I wanna know if Turley can stop him.

Fabini is 4th on Dallas' depth chart at T now. It might take alot to pry Parcells boy away from him but if he's 4th I figure it can be done. Herm's gotta consider getting his old player in KC.

I think this has been said a few times before but I am of the few that think this is a ploy to get out of camp and avoid the fine.

KC has too much promise this year with a lot of aging veterans. Many of these guys know this might be there last shot and almost every athlete dreams of winning the big one. If Roaf is serious about retiring he has play of guys trying to talk him into giving it one last go around.

I think people with thsi view are in denial. CP and HE sure are. Roaf told them in MAY that he was done and they told him to "think about it" WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK HE HAD BEEN DOING?The denial here is almost clinical and its not one person I am singling out, its everyone. When you cant walk during the week until Saturday and then you play SUnday and do it all over again, that cant be the way you want to live. The man's body is done. He doesnt want to retire, he said, but he has to listen to his body.

I blame Vermeil for this in a huge way....his old-school ways shortened this guy's career by a season or two....all to have an ego-trip for three weeks every August tolet the boys know who was in charge and kill his players.

Getting Fabini back makes sense if the Cowboys have faith in Flozell Adams' health, Rob Pettiti as other starter and Marc Columbo as depth.

It might take a 3rd rounder but might be worth it with Roaf and Welbourn gone.

I only hope it's true! Please Willie "Say it is so"

Nothing would be better than to silence all the naysayers crying about KC's o-line being the main reason for LJ's success. :boxing:

Just like last year,LJ is going to bring home the title for many of us*.

You will not regret taking him #1 regardless if Roaf is indeed retired or not.Consider it a gift from the fantasy gods if LJ drops any lower.

I really wonder how many of you guys actually watch the games as opposed to just crunching numbers.I honestly do.I don't see how you could have watched many of his games and not said "damn this guy is an absolute stud"

Bottomline is,from what I've seen,LJ's talent is off the chart,I'm mean way obvious this is the last cat I want to see on my opponents roster! :2cents:

*sadly I don't have him on any roster this year :wall:

LJ carried me to the title last year. Many people thought Priest would not let him on the field and that he was way overrated as a 4th round pick. That didn't happen. Now we have a new coach, a retiring Roaf etc. Oh dear, LJ is dropping fast again. Better wait until the 2nd round to grab him. You don't want to reach too far for this guy. Too many question marks in KC. Forget what you saw from LJ down the stretch last year. LOL!!! I'm glad he's my franchise. He's clearly a stud and if you let him go by in your draft you have nobody to blame but yourself. I'm not knocking SA or LT2, I just think LJ is the next great RB and I want him for the next 2-3 years as my franchise without question.

i agree, this stood out to me too. the question is, if he was hurting that bad, had his skills deteriorated on the field at all? if they did, i didn't notice, at least in run blocking.

810 quoting one player who says this about money.....a couple coaches have said its about practice time....

Roaf hasnt filed papers at all....

Sounds like he thinks his body cant take training camp and doesnt need it....its CLEAR KC is accepting the retirement.

Edwards"I havent heard anything from Willie about retiring. Roaf never mentioned in talks that he was thinking about retiring. I expect Roaf to play until he tells me."

Edwards continued....."All I know is he is taking care of some personal things."

Could be a Roger Clemens situation where he plays when he wants to....meaning he doesnt do training camp - just speculation
SHHHHH Kevin ;) I think this is a classic case of new coach trying to instill some work ethic for an underperforming team and an aging vet not wanting to deal with it. When Roaf "reconsiders" before the final preseason game, fans will be pissed. Also, anyone who thinks LJs pace last year was going to translate to this year are a little off in their thinking. With that being said, Roaf or no Roaf he is a top tier back and will still produce in that tier. Tough to expect stratosphere numbers over a 16 game sched regardless of scheme, line, etc.

While that may be true, Roaf is almost as reknowned as Edge for wanting to skip TC and the Preseason. And the team has not submitted his papers yet. I think there is still a decent chance (call it 33.33333%) that Roaf is convinced to come back about two weeks before the season. The timing is funny to me - if he really wanted to retire,m why didn't he announce it back in May and skip all this mini-camp, draft, etc. stuff?

bump, Kevin?I think Wellbourne could hold the key to some believing this conspiracy theory of sorts that Roaf is just missing TC. His age just seems too young to retire and I feel like if I had more info about it, it might shed some light on Roaf.

I imagine if this were a planned fake retirement(that they could prove) these players will be fined as if they held out, for every day they missed. Then I think, well the Chiefs wouldn't fine them. The CBA includes dates to report and all sorts of offseason stuff where players have to be there. It is against the spirit of the CBA/league and not fair to preseason fans that want to see the Chiefs best players. Maybe NFL can suspend them a game if this is a planned fake retirement? Pretty tricky. Since the team is always the one that fines the players it's very hard to see how they'd deal with this. Ya gotta "see" that the NFL+NFLPA don't want this to be a new trend with tons fake retiring next summer. How could they deal with it though?

W/O knowing who will replace Roaf it's a little tough, but I still expect:

1500/15/350/3

after all it is KC
Correct me if I'm wrong (and I might just be) but didn't #### vermeil come in and right after that Holmes became a superstar?
Holmes became a star after he got behind that great OLINE . . .
Holmes was a star in his first season in KC, which was also the first season in KC for Vermeil and Green... 2001. Roaf didn't arrive in KC until 2002. They did have Will Shields and Brian Waters on their OL in 2001, but they also had them in 2000, when KC had the 25th ranked rushing game. I don't think it was the OL that "made" Holmes a star. Looks much more like it had to do with Holmes & Vermeil to me.

Yep......I see why LJ, Green, Gonzo owners are playing conspiracy theories, but I dont know why.Welbourn was a nut to begin with, he isnt that big of a loss to me. And I heard Willie Roaf's interview....that man sounded defeated. He is either:

A. A really good actor who says all the classic things about his body being done.

or

B. He IS done.

Again I just dont get the denial. Maybe its me being a lifelong CHiefs fan and having learned to never get too high or too low with this team.

Now, you ask me how losing ROaf affects KC? I dont think it affects them nearly as much as others do. A downgrade yes, but not a big one.

:goodposting: I think the answer here was Vermeil + Saunders. And Soilari is keeping the same system.....nothing is changing

Most people dont remember but in 2001, Richardson (who had been the feature back in 2000), was the starter in the first 2 games of the Vermeil era. It wasnt till DV tried this FA named Holmes as the starter in Week 3 in Washington that Holmes went off.

I respectfully disagree!Going from Roaf (All-Pro) to Turley at LT is a MAJOR downgrade. Trent Green better keep his head on a swivel!

This time last year Turley was considered damaged goods and it was doubtful he'd ever play again. The guy lost 65 pounds and was hoping to switch to possibly defensive end to ease the problems with his back. Unless he's made a remarkable recovery, he's a HUGE downgrade from Roaf.

Well thanks but I knew that, was hoping Kevin had some inside info. See it's not so unlike Roaf in leaving doubt. They guy was 30, cmon now how many players retire at 30? He sat 4 games with a suspension last year, so he even took less of a pounding than he normally would.

Here's the rub(besides 30 yo)

Kansas City plans to keep him on the active roster for now, in case he changes his mind.
and
"I discussed this with the Chiefs a couple of weeks ago," said Welbourn, who participated in last month's minicamp but has been unhappy that the Chiefs would not renegotiate terms of his contract.
Now the Chiefs are pretty infamous for not discussing contract negotiations and details and such to the press. I wouldn't doubt they're calling his bluff +he said he'd retire if they didn't pay.Doesn't that seem fishy?

Roaf makes a little less than Ogden and Pace, does he expect to be the highest and he too threatenned to retire?

DE quickly didn't work and he was trying TE for a longer time, just to clarify.Turley of a few years ago would be a just fine replacement for Roaf(not as good but plenty good enough) but I think people disagree on how good he is now. LTs don't just get dropped from a squad, they're gold. He also is cheap so ya gotta wonder what the other teams that tried him out thought
