Peter King's 10 Fantasy Tips: Week 7 he laid an egg (1 Viewer)

Week 6 Fantasy Tips results are in post 102

Week 4 he had 5 correct, and 4 wrong...

Week 5 he is 7-1

Week 6 he is 7-2 with Plax left to play

Week 7 we was 3-6... his first really crappy week.

Year to Date: 40 correct, 24 wrong: 62% accuracy...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I like to read Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback on SI.com each week, and when I went to find it today I came across his week one fantasy recommendations.
I'll post them below with the players actual results. He made some pretty solid calls...They weren't all exactly 'shock the world' call outs, but he was right a lot more than he was wrong.
1. So you're all excited about stealing the Baltimore defense in the 10th round of your draft? Good pick, no question. But maybe not this week, on the road, in The Jungle, against a team that regularly puts 20-plus on the Ravens. If I'm you, I'm picking up the Jags defense and playing it against Tennessee, then putting Baltimore back in your lineup against the Jets, Cards, Browns and Niners the next four weeks. Baltimore hasn't played obviously, but the Jags were respectable: 13PA, 2 sacks, 1 Int, 2 Forced Fumbles
2. This sounds loony, I understand. But if you've got a really good third back -- say, Marshawn Lynch -- I'd consider using him this week against Denver instead of Larry Johnson against Houston. LJ: 44 Rushing, 43 Receiving, 0TDs, Lynch: 90 rushing, 9 receving and a TD
3. Speaking of Denver, Jay Cutler could struggle on the road in a very loud environment at Buffalo with a couple of cut-loose blitzers in Donte Whitner and Coy Wire. Probably a miss here, depending on your scoring system. Cutler hadd 300 yards passing, but had 1TD/1Int
4. Don't fear Jon Kitna in Oakland this week. The Black Hole will not intimidate him, nor will it cause him to throw for 97 yards. 289 yards, 3TDs and 2 Ints
5. Put Cedric Benson on your bench. He will not conquer Mount Jamal Williams on Sunday in San Diego. 19 carries for 42 yards, and one reception for 11 yards.
6. Take a chance, though, and play Bernard Berrian. The one offensive thing the Bears should be able to do is get the ball downfield on the Chargers, because San Diego won't trust Rex Grossman to win this game. Berrian's fast, really fast. And Grossman and he had a good summer together. 5 for 83... Certainly better than Benson...and not bad for your WR3, which he likely is, depending on your league size.
7. Want an unexpected tight end hit in week one? Visanthe Shiancoe in Minnesota. Brad Childress is determined to make him an integral part of his offense, and there's no way Tarvaris Jackson is consistently going to have enough time (not to mention confidence) to throw deep. 2 for 18 Big miss. He may have only had those two targets.
8. From the looks of that bad thigh Drew Bennett is toting around the practice field this week, you'll want to sit him in his first game as a Ram. King posted this article Thursday at noon, and as it turned out Bennett was incative.
9. From the looks of all the various maladies Plaxico Burress seems to be getting over -- plus the woes of the Dallas secondary, with Terence Newman a shell of himself -- he'd be a certain starter in my lineup this weekend. 8 for 144 and 3TDs He had a huge night.
10. And bench the Dallas D,' by the way. Even though Wade Phillips will have them coming at Eli Manning from everywhere, Manning will do some strafing against the Dallas backups. 35 points against, 1 sack and 1 Int
So he made calls on 12 players. By my count, he was 'right' on 8 or 9 of them, wrong on 2 or 3, and the Ravens D plays tonight... Not bad.
:rolleyes: He's an easy target. I still think he is not able to separate reality from FF, and this is more evident in the context of offering drafting tips, but you can hardly blame him given his responsibilities and connections. Let's see what happens the next few weeks.
I like Peter King's commentary on what is happening off the field, but as a fantasy guru, he is still learning.
He did well this past week. Let's see him follow that up with some success over the course of the season.
I agree with The Jerk that his past problems stemmed from an inability to separate the reality of football from the nuances of fantasy success.
The fact that King has traditionally been off-base fantasy-wise is exactly why I posted this.
I totally agree with King's insight being too heavily weighted with his perceptions of what is happening off the field, as opposed to being weighted in the stats-driven world of FF. He has been that way for years, which is what prompted my post. Much of the ridicule he takes from us FF'ers started over five years ago when he said 'whatever you do, get Danny Wuerffel as your quarterback because he will be monster in Steve Spurrier's offense'.
He mentioned in one of his articles in 2004 that he was playing in his first fantasy league in years. That lack of expereince has showed. I value his football knowledge, as I think he has pretty good access to what is going on around the league. We'll see how he does going forward...
Since he had a good week, let's post this and track how King does for week two...
A few of these items are longer term comments, like dump Bulger or trade for MJD... but we will quantify his week-to-week prognistications. I have bolded the comments that are related to specific performances that we can grade for this week...
Oh Fantasy-ites, I never urge you to panic in Week 2. Big mistake. Stick with the guys you liked in the preseason and you'll be rewarded.
Except in St. Louis, where we start our 10 fantasy tips of the week.
1. Trade Marc Bulger. You've got some quarterback-needy team in your league who will want Bulger for his 4,000-yard potential. But after left tackle Orlando Pace went down, you've got to look at the slow-footed Bulger's protection and be scared. Alex Barron and Adam Goldberg or Milford Brown at the tackles? Barron's a perennial disappointment, and Goldberg should be only an emergency guy. Bulger's going to be running for his life, and Torry Holt's going to have a bad knee all year anyway. Cut the cord now.
2. Ray Lewis and Haloti Ngata, the keys to the Ravens' up-the-gut front seven, are banged up. Normally you might want to bench the Baltimore D this week. But with Kellen Clemens likely to make his first career start for the Jets, stick with the bandaged Ravens' defense this week.
3. Put your money on Eli Manning missing one week. You shouldn't have played him against the Packers this week anyway. So if he's one of your two QBs, don't fret in the least.
4. The Giants will turn to 230-pound Derrick Ward to replace Brandon Jacobs for the next two or three weeks. Problem: Jints have Green Bay, Washington and Philadelphia over the next three Sundays, and you're not going to run much against the Pack and Iggles. Leave Ward alone.
5. Darrell Jackson, uninjured and motivated, against the Rams? Good bet for a 100-yard day.
6. Trade for Maurice Jones-Drew, and do it now.
7. If you follow one piece of advice from me this week, follow this one: Get rid of Troy Williamson. Waive him if you have him, or trade him if you can find a sucker. And pick up the best available third wideout, like Steve Smith of the Giants.
8. Willis McGahee always runs for 267 yards against the Jets. Just because he's in purple now, you shouldn't stop playing him.
9. Kenton Keith is not a famous person. But he is, on deep rosters, a great pickup because Joseph Addai's never played 16 games as The Man. And the Polian/Dungy combination won't hesitate to play no-name backs.
10. The Bucs won't be able to hold back the Saints this week. Drew Brees and Eric Johnson, the former Niner tight end, will connect 10 times, and Brees will throw for 360 yards.
and you're not going to run much against the Pack and Iggles. Leave Ward alone.
didn't the iggles get run all over last year?
Yes, sadly.The Eagles did revamp their LB corps, but it's not a given that they are improved significantly over last year's run D.
Why would anybody read what Peter King has to say about fantasy football? Isnt this the same dude that told folks to draft Danny Wuerfull in the 1rst round?
Why would anybody read what Peter King has to say about fantasy football? Isnt this the same dude that told folks to draft Danny Wuerfull in the 1rst round?
yes. he had just gotten off the phone with Wuerfful's agent..and he was told by league sources, that Danny-boy was going to be a star..and he just walked off the field with <insert coaches name here>...- typical Peter King schtick.. :thumbup:
I don't care for King much any more, just because there are a lot of other guys whose style I prefer. But aside from his Belichek/Brady/Farve love fest, he's not terrible.
You forgot his coffeewierdness and his daughters softball team.
Did anyone draft T. Williamson?
Had him on my team last year. He was that late round guy you thought you were so clever to draft, and you were eventually gonna spring him on your unsuspecting leaguemates. Then he started dropping passes. I used to call this guy "Koren Robinson".
I don't care for King much any more, just because there are a lot of other guys whose style I prefer. But aside from his Belichek/Brady/Farve love fest, he's not terrible.
Colin - I am always looking for additional writers to pick up on... I typically read MMQB and TMQ, as well as Banks and a few other SI guys...Anyone else in particular that you follow?And to the other poster who asked about why anyone would follow Kings Fantasy advice...I agree. I happened to come across his Fantasy article on Monday and he did a surprisingly good job. We'll see if he can do it two weeks in a row...
Fantasy football's popularity and corresponding importance caught the old guard punditry by surprise. I remember seeing Mort visually frustrated by the direction of questions he faced and that direction was fantasy. He handled it poorly. I remember reading King sounding completely out of his element trying to work a little fantasy advice into his column, and I remember that advice being terrible. But these guys have now had a good 18-24 months to wrap their heads around this new deal, these new requirements for popular reporting, and they are getting better, even if that requires subscribing to FBGs and tweaking some the information in order to have an opinion be both original and based on good research.
He's difficult to read considering every article is centered around himself. Just a terrible self-absorbed writing style.
The idea that he has suddenly gained fantasy insight is laughable. Some staff member is writing his fantasy stuff now, I'll bet.
7. If you follow one piece of advice from me this week, follow this one: Get rid of Troy Williamson. Waive him if you have him, or trade him if you can find a sucker.
I found this one the most interesting. He makes it sound like Williamson has a hit out on him or something. I'd like to hear from Minny homers on this one. Not that I have Williamson, but rather I'm interested in what it means for the other Minny receivers. I've been sweet on Sidney Rice, and I'm wondering if there's a chance here the kid gets to be the guy. Granted that doesn't mean a whole lot in Minny's offense right now, but still he's got the talent, and if he gets the opportunity he's a useful player for FF purposes. On the depth chart Rice is behind Wade - can he move over to Williamson's spot, or can Wade?
I have Williamson in a redraft, so yeah, I drafted him. It was a 25 round draft. I'm going to hold on for a week, because a) it will be funny if King is way wrong and b) whoever I pick up isn't starting either.
I'm impressed. By my count he made 5 good calls(2, 3, 4, 9 and 10) and only 2 bad calls. Some of the other "right" calls were kind of meh.
:rolleyes: I have Sidney Rice in a deep dynasty league so I'd like to get some more info on this as well.
After going 10-2 last week King struggled this week... He made calls about how 8 players/teams would do this week...and went 2-6 by my count.
This would put him at 12-8 for the season...
See the details from his calls below....
Since he had a good week, let's post this and track how King does for week two...
A few of these items are longer term comments, like dump Bulger or trade for MJD... but we will quantify his week-to-week prognistications. I have bolded the comments that are related to specific performances that we can grade for this week...
But with Kellen Clemens likely to make his first career start for the Jets, stick with the bandaged Ravens' defense this week. :thumbup: 4 sacks, 2 INTs, 1 FF and only 13 PA.
3. Put your money on Eli Manning missing one week. You shouldn't have played him against the Packers this week anyway. So if he's one of your two QBs, don't fret in the least. :goodposting: Eli played... not much of a fantasy call, since he said this Friday, and no one needed to set lineups, but he ended up being wrong...
4. The Giants will turn to 230-pound Derrick Ward to replace Brandon Jacobs for the next two or three weeks. Problem: Jints have Green Bay, Washington and Philadelphia over the next three Sundays, and you're not going to run much against the Pack and Iggles. Leave Ward alone. :( Ward ended up with 90 yards rushing, and another 35 receiving... That qualifies as a good day in my book.
5. Darrell Jackson, uninjured and motivated, against the Rams? Good bet for a 100-yard day. :( DJax only put up 61 yards... But in his defense,it's pretty hard to get to 100 yards receiving when your QB only throws for 126 yards...
6. Trade for Maurice Jones-Drew, and do it now.
7. If you follow one piece of advice from me this week, follow this one: Get rid of Troy Williamson. Waive him if you have him, or trade him if you can find a sucker. And pick up the best available third wideout, like Steve Smith of the Giants.
9. Kenton Keith is not a famous person. But he is, on deep rosters, a great pickup because Joseph Addai's never played 16 games as The Man. And the Polian/Dungy combination won't hesitate to play no-name backs.
10. The Bucs won't be able to hold back the Saints this week. Drew Brees and Eric Johnson, the former Niner tight end, will connect 10 times, and Brees will throw for 360 yards. :thumbdown: This essentially counts as 3 wrong. I doubt he was being literal when he said Johnson, a TE, would catch 10 balls. But catching 3 for 18 yards certainly doesn't cut it. The Saints did post 360 total yards of offense, but 14 points is not going to win many games. Brees had 260 yards, not close enough to the 360 he called for...so three wrong here.
So far he's right about Williamson but way off with Steve Smith (of the Giants). And Jones-Drew hasn't done much to justify being in anyone's fantasy lineup.
Williamson was having a good day until he left with an injury, so I wouldn't say he was right on that one (yet).
Week three is up and King has advice for you all on Thomas Jones, Westbrook, Kevin Jones, Deshawn Wynn, LT, Sammy Morris and a prediction that MJD is 'about to explode...' By my count he has been right 12 of 20 calls that were specific to week one or two...so he is at 60%.... He has some interesting calls this week about the RB position, which many of us would argue have been severe dissapointments in the first two weeks...
Before setting your lineups this week, there is much to consider at the most important position: running back.
A few late-week tips:
1. This is the week to cast your lot with Thomas Jones. Normally you'd come up against the Dolphins and say this is the time to give your offensive studs the week off. Not now. The Dolphins are 31st in the league in rush defense, giving up 4.6 yards per carry, and Zach Thomas might be sidelined with the after-effects of a concussion. Even if his calf is not 100 percent, Jones should have a breakout game.
2. Bench Brian Westbrook, obviously. Even if he plays, I don't like an Andy Reid guy who was not in the first two full practices of the week. He won't be himself Sunday against the Leos.
3. Don't be scared by Washington's patchwork offensive line (Jason Fabini and Jon Wade on the right side) because Joe Gibbs knows he can still power-rush left, behind Chris Samuels and Pete Kendall. The Giants aren't a sieve on rushing defense at 3.8 yards per rush, but they're going to have to give help to a battered, porous secondary against the suddenly maturing Jason Campbell. Whatever you'd normally do with Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts, who will continue to split the job, you should do it this week, regardless of the O-line's shape.
4. Kevin Jones should play for Detroit, but I don't like the matchup against the desperate Eagles. Sit Jones for at least another week.
5. Take a flyer on Leon Washington this week. With the season-ending injury to Justin Miller, Washington takes over as the kick returner, and he can bust one for a touchdown now in all three phases -- returning, rushing, receiving. Against the weakened Dolphins, he's a decent bet to score this week. I know he didn't have a touch last week against the speedy Ravens, but I think that will be remedied this week.
6. I like DeShawn Wynn this week, if only because the Green Bay passing game now looks so thin. Greg Jennings was joined by James Jones in the tweaked-hamstring wing of the trainer's room on Thursday. The Chargers will be sending the house at Brett Favre. In all, it's a bad offensive matchup for Green Bay, but if you're going to play one Packman this weekend, pick Wynn.
7. So everybody's saying, "What's wrong with LaDainian Tomlinson?'' I'll tell you what's wrong. The Patriots and Bears are the first- and fourth-ranked teams against the run, and they beat the tar out of him in the first two games. Approach the guy in your league who has LT, and offer to trade your two best players for him. You'll be the happy one at season's end.
8. If you're in one of those leagues where you don't pay for waiver-wire acquisitions, I'd pick up New England backup Sammy Morris this week if he's still available. The Bills have been shredded by the run so far, and they'll have to play nickel and dime a lot because Tom Brady is playing better than he ever has. The Patriots' offensive line is a finely-tuned machine. Morris should be the short-yardage guy and get three to five inside-the-10 carries.
9. Don't worry about that cast on Shaun Alexander's hand this week. He's playing the team he loved as a kid -- Cincinnati -- and he's motivated to erase the stench of last week's blown game at Arizona. I'd be stunned if he didn't have a 150-rushing-yard, two-TD day.
10. Keep playing Maurice Jones-Drew. I don't care what the matchup numbers say at Denver or what his numbers so far this season say. He's healthy and ready to explode. Never, ever sit this guy.
And I was getting loads of grief for a drunk mis-naming. Sports reporting is his full-time job, and I would think he has access to an editor and fact-checker befor things go to print.I happen to agree with him on this, though. Jansen's and Thomas' injuries = no effect on the 'skins runblocking this weekend.BTW, I am a 'phins fan. Start every single NYJet on your team.And this weekend will be yet another disappointing weekend for MJ-D owners, but what are you going to do? Unless you already drafted better options, you might as well play him. Of course, the argument might be that a guy like Fred Taylor or Julius Jones, who you probably drafted as your RB3 or 4 -or even Ladell Betts - might make a better start. The Broncos are at home and they have a bit of a rivalry with Jacksonville. I expect this one to be another Broncos-Jags low offense high defense game with limited scoring chances.
I have to completely disagree here. Westbrook missed practices all last year and was dominate on Sunday's. We're talkin' bout' PRACTICE.
I agree. Especially in a PPR, Westbrook is gold. I look for the Eagles to lean even more on Westbrook as they try to get this offense going. They took quite a bit of abuse this week for failing to get the ball into Westbrook's hands on numerous crucial 3rd down situations Monday night. They will do that this week.
You know sometimes it's good to have one "sure cut" for the next waiver round :shrug:
Does he even know who Westbrook is? Brian "constantly misses practice and still plays" Westbrook? Is this the same guy he's talking about?
I also enjoy King's column, not that I agree with it alot, it just makes for good reading.But he is not still learning fantasy, he could be the worst fantasy player out there. and I too agree that it is due to his inability to separate the NFL v. Fantasy NFL. His baseball teams are equally horrible.
Steve in Minneapolis:
Thanks for posting these every week. I have fun reading them, hearing another opinion from a guy like King, and hearing the feedback from the board regulars.
Buck
I'd be curious to know why King thinks MJD's production is going to change radically, considering his situation is not likely to change.
He's getting ~50% of the Jags' RB touches, and that's likely to remain fairly constant so long as Taylor is healthy.
Exactly! :thumbdown: Yeah, I drafted a few of those and still have Williamson on the roster going into tthis week. That team is 2-0 and second in the league in scoring. Troy is next to get the axe, I'm sure, but he's not hurting anyone on my bench for another week.
Agreed. And SiM, if you could edit the top post with the post # of "this week's addition" that would be convenient.
Interesting. I'm actually thinking of starting him this week at flex because of that...
Except for when he was a last second scratch and you got a bagel from him.
