PGA's Steve Elkington tweets gay joke re:Michael Sams (1 Viewer)

I had a thought along these same lines...

"let me get this straight - a golfer is making jokes about a football player's manliness?"

He deleted the tweet, but couldn't help following up with this gem...impressive to be considered racially insensitive and homophobic in the same day.

Steve Elkington ‏@elkpga

It goes back to "a ball hit an oriental spectator".There's no oriental spectators..There just spectators.."like m Sam...He's just an athlete

Is there a handbag toss at the combine?

He's a 51 year old Australian. Doesn't let him off the hook, but it doesn't surprise one bit either. Ho hum.

Lmao awesome joke....

but I think he was pointing out how ridiculous the gay football player thing is... not Sams but the media. He is a football player

The joke was not that funny and really not that offensive. Elkington deserves ridicule for being lame and for being a golfer. But this falls far short of bigotry and more in the camp of stupidity.

So how long until the "PC" police arrest this guy?
You seem kinda dense, so I'll explain how it works.

Only a very small portion of the population will even care that he said it. But they'll be very vocal about it. Demand an apology or threaten to boycott his sponsors. His sponsors will them put pressure on him to apologize. He will. Not because he's sorry, but because he'll finally understand that he's not a local barber or a janitor. And that this is 2014 and things like that don't fly anymore if you want to be a celebrity or athlete. From what I understand, he has a history of offending while trying to be funny. He'll learn. Maybe. If he's not too dumb.

So,who knew Steve Elkington before the "tweet"?
Always been known as one of the biggest dooshes on tour
I think Deadspin did a story on another tweet of his only about 10 days ago. He follows one of the Golf Network reporter chicks. I guess she tweeted a reunion picture of her with some girlfriends playing a round. He tweeted "Who's the short one with no rack?" It was, of course, her. He seems like an all-around swell guy.

Oh LOL that actually is funny.

He knows Stephanie. She is a total ball buster. So, yeah, that's a joke, one friend to another.

She's a cool chick who hangs with people like fat 50-something golf writers.

And no cans or not, she's pretty hot.

The guy at "Secret Dirt"'s phone just blew up. Mom wants to know why both the basement phone and the phone in the garage are going nuts.

Dumb joke, good point. Guy is a football player.

Last night they were talking about Jason Collins re-entry into the league. First openly gay in any of the four major sports yada yada yada. One guy who covered the game was surprised that in L.A. there was just lukewarm applause. Look, everyone supports him, but last night's line a typical Collins stat line: 11 minutes, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, no points. It's deserving of lukewarm applause. Anything more is patronizing, no?

It's not as if anyone on ESPN was somehow saying that Sam's 17 bench press reps and 4.9 40 time at the combine were somehow good because he was gay. So I guess I fail to see the "point" that Elkington was making.

Sure, Michael Sam should be evaluated as a football player and not a gay football player. And Tim Tebow shouldn't be evaluated as a Christian football player. And Michael Vick shouldn't be evaluated as a black quarterback. And Ray Rice shouldn't be evaluated as a wife beating running back. And Eli Manning shouldn't be evaluated as Peyton's brother. But all those additional facts are relevant to who those people are. They're stories that reflect the culture in which we view sports.

I can agree with all that.

Elk does seem like a knucklehead with a history of dumb or semi-racist tweets.

But I'm telling ya, nobody should be criticized for busting on Wei. She totally deserves it.

Your point is the applause should be tempered because he's not a top player? That's not why they were applauding.

It's not patronizing at all to acknowledge his courage with applause.
