Phil Hughes (1 Viewer)

He's the best prospects in baseball. Most people have him slightly ahead of Buchholz and miles ahead of Lester.

No reason to pile on. Hes still only 21 :goodposting:
At least he's not 15 :goodposting:
Or else Roger would have been all over him in the clubhouse last year
LOL, good line!

In regards to Phil, last night represented a shift from frustrating to disconcerting for me. Previously, he'd be nibbling and it was just painful to watch. Last night, he did do a better job of attacking and going after hitters, and he got torched, which indicates that his stuff in the zone is not what was advertised. I'm a LONG way from giving up on him, almost any young pitcher takes their lumps and the ones that really endure are better for taking early lumps, because they get a sense of pitching rather than throwing early on. However, you'd like to see ONE thing to hang your hat on right now. That 1-7 Uncle Charlie is somewhat of an outmoded pitch today. I'd much rather a plus change than a plus curve.

But at the end of the day, he is 21. And I thought River Ave Blues had some thoughts that were better than any parrotting I can do, but here is a link to their blog on Phil:

I've watched Hughes his last few outings - has he always been up in the zone?

Most of his pitches are belt high - he needs to start keeping the ball down.

Not as good as Santana.
hmmm
Lets not get crazy yet.Phil still has to show his long term durability, but I really love how agressive he generally is with hitters now, when he's going after them, he gets a nice rhythm going, gets away from nibbling and can be overpowering.
I hear what you're saying career-wise to this point, but if you could only pick one of these guys going forward (both for this year and for the rest of their respective careers), there would be a lot more guys on the Hughes side than you might think.

I LOVE Phil...But, come on here, if we are factoring dollars in the equation, then I hear very much what you're saying. But Mano y Mano, pitcher for pitcher, Phil Hughes isn't in Johan's universe yet. Johan is a Cy Young winner, Phil needs to log even a half season's worth of big league starts. He's had flashes, I want to see where this goes, but the facts are, when he had his shot in 2007, he couldn't stay healthy. When he had a look in 2008, he couldn't even sustain on the crappiest Yankee team in the last 18 years or so, and last year he had to find his legs in the bullpen. We are a handful of starts into this season, there is a long way to go, for Phil and Johan. I'm on record in the Johan trade thread that year being adamant about not trading Phil for Johan, I don't really like where he projects to with his slight frame and reliance on the slider. But when doing objective comparision, we need to see more than an April and change to have a babtism or a funeral for these guys.

Completely agree. I'm trying not to get ahead of myself here and I admittedly haven't seen Johan pitch yet this season. But from accounts of what I've heard, he doesn't look to be quite the same pitcher. His K rate has declined for several years in a row, his HR rate is skyrocketing, and he hasn't been a Cy Young caliber pitcher since 2008. I know, it's not terribly long ago but I don't think he's suddenly going to revert back to his Minnesota form anytime soon. If prospects can be traded for Roy Halladay in his prime, I don't think it's outlandish to think that people would rather Hughes than Johan going forward.

Johan isn't even Johan anymore. He hasn't been the same since last year. His fastball has lost some luster and while he's still pretty good, I'm not even sure he's an elite guy these days.

I hate the Yankees but going forward, if I were a MLB GM I'd take Hughes over Santana.
