plantar fasciitis (1 Viewer)

I bought New Balance sneakers with inserts and WA LA, my PF was cured almost instantly.  I walk probably 30-40 miles a week and am so relieved to be rid of PF.  It sucks.

I have plantar now and have done quite a bit of research. Stretching the calf muscles out is really the only cure to the problem. Anything you are doing directly to the pain in your foot is not actually helping to get rid of the problem, you are just treating the symptoms.

This is the dude I've been following for all my current physical issues.  https://youtu.be/72p58Iy6u7M
An exercise my dr gave me (it really works)  along with the calf exercises -

- Freeze a bottle of water.  I preferred aquafina or another that had ridges in the side of the bottle.

- Lay bottle on its side, use your foot to roll it back and forth for 10-15 min daily

This will control the swelling in the bottom of your foot while stretching out the tendons and achillies.  Take anti-flammatory drugs, and make sure your shoes are not worn out.

I’ve been doing the water bottle thing to get some pain relief and pre/post round therapy for when I play disc golf.

Anyone have a good rec on house slippers for this?  I have inserts but i find i aggravate my feet walking around at home where i don’t have my inserts.  I have flip flops that have decent arch support but curious if anyone has had success with something for home use?

I'd just buy a pair of slip-on sneakers for home only and put the inserts in there if it's that bad.

I threw my slippers out and wear a good pair of tennis shoes as slippers.   I stretch my calf a few times each week by doing the standing calf stretch while crossing the opposite leg in front of it.

I hadn't seen the toe talk until just now. @BobbyLayne @GoBirds

I started getting pain and was diagnosed with arthritis about 10 years ago.  My surgeon did a cheilectomy about 7 years ago.  It's a pretty low-risk procedure to help with mobility.  My toe has become progressively more worse but my pain level has been okay.  This is my most recent X-ray.  My surgeon couldn't believe I wasn't in more pain.

I am able to do an elliptical for 40 minutes a couple times a week with no issues.  However last week I started coaching soccer practice for my daughter's team.  With the running around and cutting on the field, I was in excruciating pain last Thursday night.  I'm definitely going to get it fused, just need to figure out when I want to do it.  It's my right foot, so I'm assuming I'm not going to be able to drive for a period of time.
This post is not related to plantar fasciitis but I didn't want to start a new thread.  @Bengalsfan can we change this to the ***OFFICIAL*** foot problem thread?

I'm pretty sure my right toe has either auto-fused or there is such little motion there that it's not really causing much pain at all.

However, arthritis in my left midfoot has gotten progressively worse.  I've been getting steroid shots in it for about 6-8 years but I can't put it off any longer.  I'm getting a fusion next week at my navicular-1st cuneiform joint.  Will be non-weight bearing for at least 6 weeks.  Help me prepare.  So far I have:
Crutches.
Scooter (with basket and cup holder).
Laptop tray so I can work in bed while elevating my foot.
Shower stool so I can prop my knee on it.
Covering for foot to keep dry in shower.

What else do I need?

Getting old sucks. Never in a million years did I think I would be in the FFA talking about my foot problems. Then again, I never thought we couldn't talk about women in here either.

you need that skateboard, vespa thing where you put your knee on it.  you’ll miss the start of the cake draft next week i think.

These sandals may have changed my life. I’m a runner and suffered from many issues, PF being one of them. I wear these all time and they instantly take away any PF pain. I can’t take full credit for the recommendation, shoutout to @gianmarco for these. Anyone suffering from PF, give these a try.

No answers, but man do foot problems suck.

First came gout, and I dealt with it, many times.  Wierdly I have not had issues with gout for the past three years, so I guess I'm doing some things right.

Then came plantar faciitis - WTF! Got past it too, at least for now.

Also have had run-ins with a bunion.  Again, WTF.  Pretty sure this was borne out of wearing an ill-fitting pair of boots for only a few days.

Anyway, foot maladies are the suck.

Fusion yesterday.  Hope this takes care of the problem.  I've been taking a daily prescription NSAID for 10 years, and had to go off it for 5 days before surgery.  The last couple days pain was unbearable just walking around the house.

If you ever plan on having foot surgery with a non-weight bearing recovery period, here is what you should buy ahead of time to make things easier, based on my recent experience.

Crutches (obviously)

Knee scooter.  I actually have two, one to keep in the trunk, and one to keep on the main floor of our house so I can do some things in the kitchen without any help.  Crutches really make just about everything difficult.

Got these accessories for the scooter: cup holder and basket.  Mine is also jazzed up a little, with a light, bell, and license plate.

Leg elevation pillow.  This isn't absolutely necessary, you can obviously use pillows, but we already had this and I found it to be nice.

Grip socks for your good foot if you have any non-carpeted spaces in your house.  Very easy to slip while on crutches with regular sock.

Stool for your primary bathroom you use.  Can kneel bad leg on this while washing hands, brushing teeth, etc. without having to prop yourself up on crutches.

Stool with handles for shower.  You could sit, but I use it to kneel bad leg.

Full leg cover for shower.  I haven't used this yet, waiting for delivery.  I have this one but it has a hard plastic ring below the knee, which makes it very difficult to kneel on the shower stool.

Toe cover especially if you're going outside in winter.  Waiting for this to be delivered, too.  I've been using a sock I cut off, but having trouble keeping it on, plus it's not ideal in sub 30 degree weather.

This is shuke for youtube surgery recovery.

I’m recovering from a cheilectomy, did you try that first? I’m sure a fusion is in my future but was hoping this buys a decade. Happy recovery! :hifive:

Had a cheilectomy in my other foot on my big toe, maybe 8 years ago or so.  it did help a lot.  However, over time I have lost motion in that joint and I think it is close to auto-fusion.  My x-ray looks like a clump of oatmeal there, my doc acts amazed I'm not in more pain.  Without the motion it doesn't hurt much.  But the problem is that my big toe has kind of stuck in place where it is a little higher than my other toes, so when I'm standing it doesn't really even touch the floor.  From a biomechanical standpoint, this means that more of my body weight is being transferred through my other metatarsals and toes, and I am starting to have pain in my second toe.  So I'll need a surgery on that foot at some point to correct the position of the toe.  Actually thinking about doing it later this year because I've already met my insurance out of pocket max for the year, so everything from here on out is free for me.

Here it is.  Compare right big toe to left, which is what a normal joint space looks like.  This is probably from 2 years ago.

Man that is a mess, I would say do it now while you’ve met your minimum and the world is working from home anyways. Hang in there buddy, this getting old stuff is for the birds.

Arthritis is usually associated with the hands but it can also occur in the feet, knees, hips and shoulders. Luckily arthritic pain can be treated with medication, treatment modalities like ice packs, therapeutic exercise and non-surgical procedures.

While there are many similarities between arthritis in the hands and foot - they both affect the synovial joints of either thumb or big toe joint - there are enough differences to affect whether someone needs surgery on one hand versus the other foot.

Well, about a year out and it looks like I have a non-union.  I have had ongoing pain/stiffness/limp since I started walking, but was able to get through it and do a bunch of stuff this past year including multiple trips with a lot of walking and hiking.  However, the pain has gotten worse, and I need to repeat this surgery.  We're going to Denver in June for some shows at Red Rocks, so I think doing the surgery end of this month will be cutting it too close with respect to recovery (3 months non-weight bearing followed by a month in a walking boot), so going to try to put it off.  Neat.

Plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis, what’s the discernible difference?

I suddenly have developed pain in my feet:  on the right foot it’s the heel, not the part you walk on, but the back side.  Attempting to look at diagrams of both tendons and where the ailments should be felt, well it seems I could have one or the other?  Pointing toes down and I don’t feel anything, trying to pull my foot up and that’s when I can feel the stretch and burning pain in my heel.  I just started wrapping an ice pack there with ace bandage last night and will continue for a few days to start

Oh, and on my left side it feels like I’ve grown a speed bump on the ball of my foot and it hurts to walk on

I'm not yet ready to bring my “well all I did was take down the Xmas lights by going up and down the ladder barefoot all day…is barefoot wrong?!” to the doctor

Not sure what update I ever gave on this, but this never healed correctly. My doctor said I've basically been walking around since last March on a broken foot. Going in for revision surgery Thursday.

I guess I could have looked and saw I gave an update two posts up.

Good luck. You do kind of need your feet.
