Plaxico Burress no longer a stud WR1? (1 Viewer)

It doesn't seem that long ago that Plax was a top 5 receiver but, either because his ankle is really starting to limit him or Eli has regressed a bit or a combination of both, are his days of big yardage and 1 to 2 TD's a game a thing of the past (at least for the rest of this season)?

Tough call for Burress owners this week. Based on his performance and his statements about the ankle, I'd bench him for a better option, but he's playing Detroit this week. FWIW, his FBG projection this week suggests that benching him is a good idea if you have a decent option.

I was actually surprised that he was putting up those numbers earlier more than I'm surprised he hasn't continued. Eli seemed to get the ball out to Shockey fine this past weekend. It sounds like Plax's ankle is going to become more and more of a limiter for him unfortunately.

I think the Plax news this week is mostly just a smokescreen and he is going to light up Detroit. The ankle has been an issue all year. It's not that it's getting worse, as much as it's just not getting better. Maybe he'll need surgery in the offseason. But he's proven early on that he can produce at a high level even with this injury. My guess is that he puts up some huge numbers on the Lions.

Detroit is the test. If he clunks out there, forget it, move on for awhile...if not the rest of the season.

He is fine.

If you watched Giants vs Miami, in that slop-fest... he had two deep 50 yard bombs for TD's thrown to him, but he had someone on his back, and the field was a mess. The Cowboys simply super glued Newman to him, with help from a safety... and shut him down, forcing Eli to go elsewhere.

Plax will be just fine. No reciever can have huge days every week.

I think you will see more of the whole no practice all week and then play on Sunday.

WR's are much streakier than any other position. Shockey was all over the place last week. Take what the D gives you. They gave the Giants Shockey. They capitalized on that. Plax was covered. This week will be a different story as long as he stays healthy....

Also, his next 3 week are pretty cake in terms of pass D as well as his week 16 matchup. If he were on my squad he would start this week....

I think his ankle problem is the real deal.

Yes, the Dallas D is slightly better than early on but he was close to unstoppable when they met early on this season. It isn't Manning, Plax just isn't getting downfield with the speed we saw earlier this year.

I think you start him vs Detroit because they're not a strong defense. I think he has an OK game, a startable game for fantasy football but doesn't put up quality numbers against stronger defenses.

It is a very difficult thing for owners to realize, that their stud ATM isn't a stud. Steve Smith is a great player but benched on my team the last couple of weeks for guys normally I wouldn't dream of starting over him.

you were expecting Burress to net you 16-32 TDs this year?:11:

Coughlin expects Burress to play

Plaxico Burress, WR NYG

News: In a conference call with the Detroit media on Wednesday, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he expects WR Plaxico Burress to play despite having a sore ankle. "He is doing OK," Coughlin said. "He is very sore during the course of the early part of the week, and then he gets a little bit better as the week goes on. By the weekend he is back to a point where he can play."

Analysis: Coughlin added that Burress can't make his cuts as well as he normally can with his ankle sore, adding that some things asked of him are tough for him to do. His stats are proof that he's not healthy. Consider Burress a No. 1 Fantasy WR since he has potential to play well just so long as he's on the field -- and because he's got a great matchup at Detroit's 30th-ranked pass defense. We'll keep you posted on Plax's ankle :banned:

This is the reason why Plax feel in many drafts... Dynasty Owners need to worry; Plax always has something wrong by mid-season.... its either his ankle or his back. IMO; Plax is aging real quick, if your out of the play-off race... I would attempt too move him if you can get WR Top 15 talent and a pick. If not; I would push hard to move him this off-season.

Dealt him last night for Ryan Grant right before our trading deadline. Won me some games early in the year but not a guy I want in my lineup come playoff time - good riddance.

It appears as though the honeymoon is over with the Giants and wide receiver Plaxico Burress, and the other bad news is that there simply isn't anyone to replace him — and the problem may become exacerbated this Sunday when they travel to Detroit to face the resurgent Lions.

This takes some explaining.

All season, their star wideout has missed practice all week because of a "severely sprained ankle," according to no less than Dr. Robert Anderson of Charlotte, N.C., a nationally respected orthopedic specialist in the foot and ankle. He prescribed "total rest," but because Burress is a pro football player, the compromise has been not to practice all week and then play on game days.

It has worked reasonably well. But last week, Plaxico decided to try to practice on a Wednesday, came up sore and swollen and was of almost no value in the Giants' key division matchup against Dallas, a game they lost, 31-20, ending their six-game winning streak and falling two games behind the Cowboys in the NFC East.

Now there are rumblings that Burress might have hit the point of diminished returns, and while head coach Tom Coughlin tries to put that thought aside, he has to address it. "Every week, at the beginning of the week, is very difficult for him. He's very sore, that kind of thing. He is committed to play by the end of the week, and usually feeling better. So now we are in the same position with him as we always are, trying to get him there as fast as we can."

The problem, the one that compounds the potential loss of this 6-5, 225-pound superstar, is that there is virtually no depth. Last year's second-round pick, Sinorice Moss, has been an almost total disappointment. This year's second-round pick, Steve Smith, has spent most of the season injured and the word is that he would be "highly questionable" this week.

That leaves veteran Amani Toomer and — well, who? — on the other side. At the moment, it would be Moss, who has caught seven passes for 59 yards all season, or special teams star David Tyree, who is at best an ordinary receiver.

It is possible that offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride might jury-rig another formation, utilizing one of the running backs (like rookie Ahmad Bradshaw?) as a receiver, or using just one but putting in two or three tight ends. It is not a healthy or hopeful scenario at best.

Would the situation be better, Coughlin was asked, if he had someone behind Burress? "Well, that's not a reality question. He wants to play. He certainly has demonstrated that he can, under most circumstances. And that is the way it is."

Burress has caught 41 passes for 588 yards and eight touchdowns so far, but had only four for 24 yards in the first half last Sunday and nothing after that.

Tight end Jeremy Shockey, who caught 12 passes for 129 yards last Sunday, is the next viable alternative — but using him without having Burress would beg for double-teaming.

It's a problem, and if the 6-3 Giants have to face a world without Burress, it might not be a happy place for them.

—WR Plaxico Burress (sprained ankle), seemed testy to the continual questions about his injury. "It's the same old story," he said. "You guys ask me the same question every day. It is sore. It is hurt. I play hurt. And I go out and perform the best way that I can. I just go day-to-day."

The Giants may be on the verge of installing a slightly modified passing offense game plan since TE Jeremy Shockey caught 12 passes last week vs. Dallas. He did so for two reasons — the Cowboys don't have a safety who can stay with him, and they were busy double-teaming WR Plaxico Burress, although they deny that. With Burress perhaps more hobbled than usual with his sprained ankle — he doesn't practice during the week but plays on game day — it is possible that Shockey will be used to take up the slack.
