Player Spotlight: Donald Lee (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Donald Lee, TE, Green Bay Packers

Player Page Link: Donald Lee Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Lee came basically out of nowhere last year to post solid TE #s and give Favre probably his best TE option ever (not that that's saying much...did they finally get rid of Franks or what?). With Favre "gone" it's hard to say if his #s go down due to a lesser O w/the lesser QB, or up because Rogers may "lean" on Lee more as a short yardage option. Offhand I'd guess they roughly balance out and he gets slightly lesser #s. Worthwhile backup TE or possible starter in bigger leagues, not much more.

I think the young QB relies on him more.

65/780/5

Puts him squarely in the top 10 and shows him as one of the rising starts at TE in the league....2009, better numbers and the pro-bowl...

It seems like half the teams in the NFL have at least a decent tight-end. The Packers are obviously one of them. Donald Lee should put up solid numbers in 2008.

It's hard to say what he'll do this year, but I think a good 'sampling'is what he did last year with Aaron Rodgers at the helm:

3 catches for 30 yards - NO TDs

Favre didn't make one attempt to Lee through the first quarter, and one drive in the second quarter.

Here's Rodger's first drive - he sought out Donald Lee:

-N.Folk kicks 67 yards from DAL 30 to GB 3. 81-K.Robinson to GB 25 for 22 yards (25-P.Watkins). Return middle.

1-10-GB 25 (9:47) 12-A.Rodgers pass incomplete short right (96-M.Spears). Spears knocked the ball down at the line of scrimmage; Rodgers now in at quarterback; Favre has an elbow injury.

2-10-GB 25 (9:42) 25-R.Grant up the middle to GB 28 for 3 yards (96-M.Spears; 51-A.Ayodele).

3-7-GB 28 (9:04) (Shotgun) 12-A.Rodgers scrambles up the middle to GB 36 for 8 yards (26-K.Hamlin).

1-10-GB 36 (8:28) 12-A.Rodgers pass incomplete deep middle to 86-D.Lee (94-D.Ware). Pass knocked away at the 50.

2-10-GB 36 (8:23) (Shotgun) 12-A.Rodgers pass short right to 86-D.Lee pushed ob at GB 39 for 3 yards (98-G.Ellis).

3-7-GB 39 (7:53) (Shotgun) 12-A.Rodgers pass incomplete short left to 34-V.Morency [97-J.Hatcher]. Screen pass.

4-7-GB 39 (7:47) (Punt formation) 9-J.Ryan punts 57 yards to DAL 4, Center-60-R.Davis, downed by GB-59-T.White.

Always wondered how much there is to the "new QB leans on the TE" thing. Be interesting to see how Rogers plays it between him and Driver and Jennings.

It could be just an urban myth, but reading D's in the NFL is pretty tough and checking down to the TE and making short, high percentage passes is a quick way to gain confidence. always seemed like sound logic to me, but I haven't looked at it statistically. Need someone who is better at that than I am to dig into those numbers...

And James Jones, who he might be the most comfortable with through practices last season. All speculation.
