Player Spotlight: Frank Gore (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Frank Gore, RB, San Francisco 49ers

Player Page Link: Frank Gore Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

With Singletary at the helm starting week 1 and only Coffee to fight for carries, I think Gore is in for a GREAT year. I don't think he repeats his 2006 numbers, but I definitely think he'll put up top 5 numbers. Remember, he was one of the best RB's in FF up until week 12 last year. I think a lot is made of his injuries, yet he's only missed 5 games in 4 years. I know he's banged up and bruised a lot, yet he's one of the more consistent RB's and one of the only RB's who won't be splitting significant carries this year

290 carries - 1,300 yards - 9 TD's

50 receptions - 400 yards - 2 TD's

1,700 total yards and 11 TD's

Much like Portis, I like Gore as long as Shaun Hill is under center.

However, Alex Smith's presence scares the #### out of me.

I prefer Portis, slightly, mainly because Singletary wants to limit Gore's touches, I think this may prove difficult to justify because San Francisco's depth at RB is lousy.

He does?! I've seen just the opposite. He plays a pretty friendly schedule including Detroit in week 16, the 49ers look like a team on the rise, FB Moran Norris has returned, and Singletary will likely ride his best offensive player.I really like Gore at the back end of the first teamed up with Calvin Johnson. I'm hoping for the 10th or 11th pick to land that combo.

320 carries for 1408 yards

45 receptions for 382 yards

10 total TDs

I don't save quotes, I copy and paste them into a spreadsheet when I see them, maybe someone else can provide the link but I read recently that he felt Gore would be more effective if there was someone else to help him shoulder the load, or something like that. But, again, I think the other RB's on the roster suck so it's very possible Singletary scraps that plan and just gives Gore the ball 400 times.

Frank Gore had an awesome season three years ago and has slipped some since. In 06, he was the RB4 with 1695 yards rushing and 485 yards receiving with 9 TDs. In the previous two years, he has finished as RB9 and RB14, first missing one game and then last season two.

He remains the only option for the 49ers as their RB depth is weak so he shoulkd continue to be the work horse unless injured. The 49ers seemed to turn the corner some toward the end of last season and have added Crabtree and Brandon Jones to the WR roster. The main problem with their WRs has been no take charge guy. They have five or six somewhat capable WRs and a thought to be talented TE, but they have not had a lot of recent success. If their passing attack steps up the productivity and especially if they develop a go to WR, then Gore should be able to improve his ypc on the ground. I think that he is aptly slotted currently at an ADP of RB8 and 9 overall. He could pay handsome rewards for a low first round pick.

Frank Gore 300 carries 1350 yards 4.5 ypa with 50 receptions for 420 yards 8.4 ypa and 8 TDs

Frank's production this year is going to be contingent on how the O-line develops and plays with consistency. They got young guys well over 300 lbs and they need to gel together as a unit for Gore to return close to '06 numbers(2180 total yds/9 tds). Joe Staley and Kevin Baas anchor the left side but need better production from the right side in a healthy Marvel Smith and a young developing Chilio Rachal. Heitmann at center is ok for now. They're currently in the bottom third of OL rankings and Toolbox has them at #29. They have to get better than that if Gore is to return to prominence. They allowed 55 sacks last year, under now departed Mike Martz offense, so those numbers should improve. They did get better as a unit late in '08. Gore having Moran Norris at fullback will help no doubt and I believe he'll enjoy getting back to some power running.Singletary should be able to utilize Gore without overusing him to maximize his production. That means the other skill positions will have to improve for Gore to stay productive. He also stands to produce better with Shaun Hill at QB. I believe the 9ers overall offensive production will be better this year and they're headed in the right direction of getting back to winning football games.

Frank Gore 2009 projections:

265 carries/ 1250 yds/9 tds

51 receptions/ 425yds/2 tds

He's only 26 and should be entering the prime of his NFL career. Has had a few injury bugs but hasn't missed a whole lot of games. He plays with a lot of heart and determination. His current ADP is at RB9 and will be a good RB1 getting him late in the first round. Gore's situation is also improved by no longer having Mike Martz as OC. Singletary wants to get back to the old type of Bill Walsh WCO somewhat and that benefits Frank. If the receiving core improves, as I expect it to with new stud Michael Crabtree and youngster Josh Morgan, Gore will benefit from that also. I'm just hoping that while Frank still has some good years ahead of him that they find a franchise QB for the future.IMO, I don't think Shaun Hill or Alex Smith figures in that picture. Not sure that Nate Davis is the answer either as he seems to be a project with some mechanical issues not to mention having a learning disability which may or may not hinder him. They have 2 first round picks next year and would like to see them get a franchise QB in the draft. Possibly Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy.

Mike Singletary has expressed a great desire to run the ball and play defense. This suits his personality and I believe the 49ers can be successful doing this. They OL should be improved from last year, and Frank got his FB, which should help a bunch. Add to that some improvements in the WR department and some competition from Coffee and I really like Gore this year. I think he and Portis are two of the safer picks at the turn if they make it that far.

290 carries for 1300yds and 9 tds

45 catches for 400 yds and 2 tds

His injuries concern me less than the team's offensive ability. Gore has never put up good TD numbers, mostly because they just aren't in the red zone much. I see his yards going up, but TDs staying the same.

1300 rush, 6 TDs

250 rec, 2 TDs

203 points, low-end RB1
