Player Spotlight: John Carlson (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: John Carlson, TE, Seattle Seahawks

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Tight End is a difficult position for a rookie to excel. There haven't been many able to shine from the start up. John Carlson did play in an NFL type system at Notre Dame and he is said to be an accomplished blocker and receiver. He also has a great QB to play with and a shortage of receiving options. If any rookie TE excels in 08, I'll go with Carlson as the pick, but I won't go so far as to project success for him.

John Carlson 60 targets 39 receptions 65% 468 yards 12.0 ypc 4 TDs

I don't know if it is me getting older and kind of outgrowing FF or something. But I had to chuckle when I read this name because I have never heard of this player. That hasn't happenned since probably 1994 or so. I mean he just didn't even register a blip on my radar. Yikes. :lmao:

Is this what has become of the TE position, that we're spotlighting a rookie TE?Yikes.
LOL...we spotlight the lion's share of projected starting TEs as you know Jeff. People didn't complain when we spotlighted Vernon Davis or Greg Olsen or Todd Heap or Kellen Winslow as rookies. Carlson is not only going to get a chance to play but the Seahawks are really counting on him to buck the typical rookie learning curve the most TEs endure. That said, considering the complexities of the Seattle WCO, I expect Carlson to be a relatively modest roster option at best for at least the first half of the season.

It's all good, Wood. If Seattle is thin at WR - Branch out, DJ Hackett gone - relying on Engram and Burleson, Carlson can certainy be a cheap TE option. His upside is about 40-450-4.

Will there be a Leonard Pope?

Rookie TE John Carlson was reportedly outplayed by journeymen Jeb Putzier and Will Heller during Seahawks pre-training camp workouts.

This isn't to say Carlson will begin his career on the bench, but coach Mike Holmgren has never started a rookie tight end and the second-rounder has work to do.

Seattle could enter the season using a rotation at the position.

if youre going to spotlight a rookie TE it should be Dustin Keller, who I think has a very good year for a rookie

Carlson- 30 rec 320yds 3 tds. Its tough to predict how the depth chart will play out at TE in Seattle at this point
