Player Spotlight: Roddy White (1 Viewer)

Zoo York
2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Roddy White, WR, Atlanta Falcons

Player Page Link: Roddy White Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

I like R. White

I see as being a very consistent pro for years to come as Ryan gets better and better

The big question is his td's.........will they go up?

I think the answer is "NO" due to Turner being a td monster and Gonzo definetly getting a big chunk as well

If I had to guess at his projections for this year I will go high on his yards and low on his td's

95 catches

1500 yards

5 td's

should be a top ten guy

Roddy White is underrated imo. After Fitzgerald, and AJ there's no WR who has a better chance of being a top 10 WR than Roddy White imo.

I'll project something in the neighbourhood of 90 receptions, 1450 yards, 10 TDs.

I think the taller target and improving Jenkins will get a larger share and looks in the end zone besides Gonzo getting his share also..

Here is a player who has back to back years with 80+ receptions and 1200+ yards with 6 and 7 TDs respectively. These coming in his 3rd and 4th seasons in the NFL. In the first of these 2 seasons he played on a terrible team with a terrible offense and a carosel at QB with the likes of Chris Redman, Byron Leftwich and Joey Harrington! Matt Ryan was good last year and looks to be a star in the making but was still a rookie. White is his go to guy. The only downside I see is a strong running game the team will rely on heavily.

92-1330-9

I am a little cautious with my projections for Roddy White. Atlanta hit on all cylinders for the majority of the 08 season and I believe that they are in the toughest divisions in the NFC, yes even equal to the NFC East.

The Falcons had several weapons last year and they kept them all and added Gonzo. I think that this will limit White's opportunities to increase productivity. Another reason for caution is that his ADP has climbed to WR8 and 24 overall. Last year he caught 88 passes and finished as WR6. Just seems like a little slippage is possible.

Roddy White 130 targets 78 catches 60.0% 1170 yards 15.0 ypc 6 TDs

Likely a 10-15 WR. One of the harder to judge WR's at this point. I may re-view these projection later.

For now:

125 Targets

85 Receptions

1075 Yards

6 TDs

Roddy White is underrated imo. After Fitzgerald, and AJ and of course Randy Moss there's no WR who has a better chance of being a top 10 WR than Roddy White imo.

I'll project something in the neighbourhood of 90 receptions, 1450 yards, 10 TDs.
fixedI will say 89/1310/8td for Roddy

How can you possibly say that?!STEVE SMITH! Greg Jennings also.

There are very few guys I put ahead of White, but: Moss, Smith, AJ, Jennings, Fitz all go before he does.

Ryan could sophomore slump...never know...

That being said, I believe Ryan doesn;t slump and he puts up another solid year. With such a strong running game, play action passes get really effective, and Gonzo has to limit the amount of double teams they put on White. I'd go with:

130 targets, 89 rec, 1345 yards, and between 5-8 TDs.

I'll be the first to admit I was way off about White last season... there were a number of reasons to dislike him, including playing with a rookie QB, and on an offense that was reportedly going to be run first. Yet he improved in every single statistical category for WRs.

I see White as the Falcons clear number one receiver. Any one who thinks Jenkins will take his spot, really hasn't watched Jenkins. And while Gonzo is a HOF TE, he's nearing his last legs. Gonzo will do more for the running game and 3rd down conversions than he will take away from Roddy White.

94 rec, 1,410 yards, 11 TDs.

I was high on Roddy White last season and think that he will only improve on his numbers this year. The Tony Gonzalez aquistion actually helps him in my opinion because it seemed like later in the season Roddy was having trouble with all of the attention defenses were concentrating on him. Having a weapon like Gonzalez should really free him up.

I expect him to hit around

95 1425 9

This is an excellent point that isn't mentioned enough. Jenkins seemed to emerge later in the season when defenses rolled a lot of coverage to Roddy, taking him out the game for the most part during some weeks. With Gonzo there and Jenkins still as a threat, that should enable Roddy to get more one-on-one coverage.

White is his go to guy.
We'll see about that. When's the last time a wide receiver led a team in receptions with Tony Gonzalez as the tight end?
This is the whole "chicken or the egg" discussion. Is Gonzalez going to steal targets and red zone opportunities from White? Or is Gonzalez going to draw coverage away from White and create more opportunities for him?I subscribe to the theory that normally these two effects resulting from personel changes usually cancel each other out. My projection:85/1300/8

There is only one real question here...how much does Gonzo cut into White's opportunities? Lets say a little (proportion of targets) and not at all (scoring opportunities). It is forseeable to think that White will not likely see the 34% of team targets as he did last season. But, it is just as likely that Atlanta will throw a little more often and that Gonzo will likely remove a safety or 2 from double coverage throughout the season, thus allowing White to improve on his 7 TDs from last season (a small tally considering his 88 recs and 15+ yard per reception stat line). Atlanta passing a little more frequently should maintain his reception total in proximity to last year's numbers.

79-1189-9

(30% of the passing targets--Atlanta throws 46% of their 990 offensive plays--catches 58% of targets at 15 yards per)

*edit numbers from 93-1395-9 (spreadsheet malfunction)

I agree here! Jenkins will see more targets! Also the addition of Gonzo will take some away. I still like Roddy as a top WR, but he has fallen down my ranks a bit?

77 Rec

1032 yds

5 TDs

I don't think much changes with the addition of Gonzalez. Roddy is still the top target on this team and the most skilled pass catcher.

86 rec

1233 yds

6 TDs

BUMP -

What's the latest? What impact is Gonzo having on White thus far in pre-season? and/or what do you all think at this juncture?
