Player Spotlight: Zach Miller (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Zach Miller, TE, Oakland Raiders

Player Page Link: Zach Miller Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

56 for 778 / 1 TD last year - better than I remembered. This is still a run-first team, and I wonder how much of Miller's yardage came on desperation drives in losses. Imagine the stats he could put up somewhere like Philly...

...or maybe catching passes from Jeff Garcia this year? A better chance for TDs? A good question to revisit in August, for now I can't bump Miller too much.

60 catches, 750 yards, 3 TDs

I really like him and think he will continue to improve, especially as a red zone target.

65 rec - 845 yds - 7 TDs

Last year he had 13.9 YPC, but I am downgrading it a little to an even 13 YPC, which may still be a little ambitious but not unrealistic since he has already been there. It wouldn't surprise me if he is the leading receiver in OAK this year.

Obviously a lot of Miller's stats will depend on who is throwing him the ball. Does Garcia have a real chance to win the job, or is he just there to motivate JaMarcus Russell? Either way, Miller has to fight for balls with DHB, JL Higgins and Chaz Schilens.

I do think he'll get into the end zone a few more times just from dumb luck, but I think his catches and yards should end up about the same.

55 catches, 725 yards, 5 TDs.

i think the improvement, just by being in the nfl longer, by the wr's, will actually open up the middle a little more. allowing miller a few more catches, but for a lower average. & i'll give a couple of td's just on luck. if garcia starts, bump these a little more.

75/863/3

I love the talent and would be all over him if I had any trust in his QB situation.

60-750-4

Zach Miller had 44 catches for 444 yards and 10.1 yoc as a rookie. He increased his production in his second year to 56 catches for 778 yards and 13.9 ypc. His only problem thus far in his career is lack of TDs with only 4 to date.

I love his talent and don't think that his situation is as dire or his QB as bad as most proclaim. I project another level of improvement in his third year.

Zach Miller 105 targets 70 catches 910 yards 13.0 ypc and 5 TDs

He has the talent to catch 75+, the question lays on the offense as a whole. With Jamarcus struggling last year, McFadden gimping his toe week 2 vs Kansas City, and the coaching turnover in Oakland; I don't see how his prospects could be anything but up this coming season. The Oakland WR corps are still very much a work in progress; Zach has the talent and certainly the opportunity to be the go to option in that passing offense inside 15 yards and without a doubt in the red zone.

72 catches, 812 yards, 6 TDs

value TE.

The only thing that makes me a little nervous about Miller is the questions on his potential for lingering issues with his hernia surgery.

65 catches for 850 yards and 3 TDs should be attainable.

I doubt Zach catches almost 70% of his targets and go over 13ypc for 2 straight years.
