I posted about the below in the Coronavirus thread, but that’s gonna get buried quickly and I do believe this is an important point.
As some may remember, I’m into walkable urban development and Downtown and community revitalization. Small business is at the core of both imo.
As such, I’m generally a proponent of shop local when you can, tip generously when servers go above and beyond (and tip well if they just do a good job), all that. Hardly Ghandi, but it’s something.
Right now folks are asking if they should go out to eat. Many will order in to avoid being around crowds. Each of us needs to make our own choice based on the information we have. Cautious, but try to not overreact. Either way, especially now, let’s find ways to support local businesses as many could legit face bankruptcy with such loss of volume and business.
Many small business owners don’t have the means to survive a prolonged turndown. Many of their employees live paycheck to paycheck. Far more have no health insurance. I know lunch shifts in major hotel restaurants are being canceled... and the servers have no way to make up that income (not like extra shifts are available elsewhere right now). Hospitality families where husband and wife.. with kids... who make a decent living but have little or now insurance and savings are especially vulnerable. And these people generally work their asses off.
So, whether you head out to eat, or order in, maybe tip a few extra bucks. Maybe be a bit extra understanding of things don’t run perfectly. And find ways to support your community, so they can remain to serve your community well past this acute crisis.
(and yes, I still write lengthy posts. Have to live up to what rep I may still have here
