It seems like we are in the midst of a fantasy football format revolution; there are millions of ways to play the game.
I want to share with you a game format my friends and I have been working on: Pokemon-Inspired Fantasy Football.
Players draft, battle, and catch element-powered athletes and set weekly lineups, earn points, and rise to face the Elite Three: legendary bosses and fantasy pros.
In a nutshell, we are blending traditional season-long fantasy football with RPG game mechanics to create a story-driven fantasy football adventure game (yes, we are dorks).
How It Works:
Choose Your Starters: Everyone starts with 3 "starter" players (1 QB, 1 RB, and 1 WR). These aren’t the top dogs – think of them as your Charmander or Squirtle – they’ll help you get started but won’t win the season on their own!
Battle to Capture New Players: Each week, you pick an opponent for each of your starters. If your player outscores the opponent you chose for them - you "capture" that player and add them to your team. Slowly but surely, you’ll build an unstoppable roster!
Elemental Types: Players have "types" based on their real-life NFL teams. For example, Chargers players are Electric
, Cardinals players are Flying
, and so on. Type matchups matter! If your player is "super effective" against their opponent - you'll get a scoring bonus (and we all know what a difference a few points can make...)
Choose Your Matchups Wisely: Week after week, you’ll need to make smart choices about who to challenge and when. The ultimate goal is to create a powerful lineup that can dominate by the end of the season.
Elite 3 Final Challenge: Face three legendary bosses, each mastering three element types, in the final weeks (15–17) of the season. Your full team battles theirs (no more one-on-one fights). Victory goes to the side with the highest total team points. Defeat all three to become the Monster League Champion
.
Last season, my friends and I built a lean version of the game just for fun and we had a blast playing.
We'd love to know what your think of the concept. We are looking for like-minded fantasy nerds to get feedback and learn from to make the game better!
So, what do you think? Would you play?
