Polamalu Retiring (1 Viewer)

Hardly qualifies as a woah, it was either this or playing for a low salary in a place like Tennessee.

As a Steeler fan I'll miss him greatly. In his prime he was as enjoyable a player to watch as any Steeler I can ever recall.

That being said I'm very pleased to see this news tonight because the alternative would have been him getting cut and playing out his career as a faded player with another team.

The Steelers sure like their players and coaches "retiring".

If this is really Polamalu going out on his own, more power to him.

I hate the Steelers More than any other team in the NFL, but I have felt for a long time Troy was the best safety in the game and perhaps ever and played the game full tilt on every play. In my opinion he had the greatest interception in the history of the league. He is a player I am sad to see retire, he was truly a great one and played the game the way it was meant to be played.

It's a woah for me.

nearly 1/3 of my life watching him play, doing the seemingly impossible, blowing up defenders, slapping my Browns.

I hate him, cuz I have to... But I respect the hell out of him... Won;t be the same without that hair flying around the field.

Are you Bill Walton ?

I'm not specifically a Steeler fan but otherwise I agree with all of this. I'm glad Polamalu got to make a dignified exit. Few players do.

I have to say, it is interesting how many (not all) of the Steelers greats choose to retire versus take a farewell deal somewhere else.

Next stop... Canton!

/salute Troy. What an amazing player.
Three retired safeties with potential HOF resumes. Since the Hall has historically frowned on safeties, which one do you value more?

6 sacks 531 tackles 112 assists

Player 2

Whichever one was the best, most dominant player on the field. Which statistics will almost never tell you, since offenses go to great lengths to avoid dominant players when possible.

<_< Nashville is awesome.

But yeah, it was time for Troy to retire. HOF for sure, should be first ballot. One of the most exciting defensive players to watch.

Maybe it's possible that offenses avoided more than one of these players?

Take Dawkins on his own merits.

Polamalu is going into the HOF and for that matter so is Reed. Locks.

And Dawkins merits include comparable number of Pro Bowls/ All Pros, comparable INT to Polamalu and considerably more sacks/tackles than either.

I thought Reed's numbers were surprising for the startling number of INT and the comparatively low number of sacks/tackles.

ETA: The player stats in order are Reed, Polamalu, Dawkins

Entirely possible, and even probable. Does nothing to change the fact that the stats are meaningless in describing them. I don't know who's who by looking, and don't much care, since...wait for it...the stats aren't meaningful.

Everson Walls had more picks than Deion Sanders. Jesse Tuggle had more tackles than Ray Lewis. Defense isn't about that stuff.

I think Ed Reed was better
i think Ed Reed was a better coverage type defender and ball in the air guy.

I think troy was better at run stopping, chaos and breaking up plays

if that makes any sense.

so for the sake of comarison ... Reed was a little more Deion and Troy a little more Lott.

both guys could do it all though

Only started watching football in '03 been a Steelers fan ever since. I have watched him my entire football life and there is no player I loved more. Hines Ward comes close, but the way Troy played was untouchable by ANY safety in the league. The guy is a true legend, not to mention how he handled himself off the field. Class act in every fashion. HOF bound. I'll miss you Troy.

LeRoy Butler.

Saw a tweet last night that the only HOF-eligible defensive players with 4+ First team All pros that were NOT in the HOF were Butler and Zach Thomas.

The play at the :44 mark in this video exemplifies the way Troy played and shows off his explosiveness. C. Johnson takes a pitch and everyone is blocked except for Troy who is off the screen... I remember watching this play live (pretty sure it was a Monday or Sunday night game) as it unfolded and I thought Johnson had a big gain and worried he might take it to the house. Then out of nowhere, moving exponentially faster than some of the best athletes on the planet, Troy rockets into the picture and blows up Johnson for a loss on the play. Remarkable.

His reckless style was entertaining. We'll probably never see it again with rules moving towards patty cake football.

I think guys like Butler are on all time franchise best lists but are just in that tier one level below HOF.

Damn fine safety. Not a Steelers fan, but the can could flat-out play for a number of years and was one of those an offense had to always know where he was. Definite HoFer.

Polamalu/Dawkins/Reed and for a couple years ST gave us some really incredible safety play. There's a definite drop in today's safety play outside of the Seahawks (who are surrounded by other studs), IMO.
